Shannon Elizabeth, who played Justice, was also in American Pie. She was the the one that was on camera on the internet with Jason Biggs' character. It was a blink and you'll miss it moment in this movie but they reference that scene when they run into Jason and James in the dressing room. Jay talks about how he would get with her and his love interest here is played by her. Smith was really all about the references.

Definitely encouraging a Purple Rain reaction. I'm really, REALLY surprised how well it holds up as a dramatic story in spite of its absurdity. Virtually the only thing about it that seems unrealistic is the idea that an inner-city kid from suburban Minnesota would actually dress like Prince in his daily life... but then again, that's literally the story of Prince, so...

Not sure if it was mentioned in the trivia but Jennifer Schwalback (the other jewel thief) is Kevin Smith's wife. There's really only three more movies in the ViewAskewniverse- Clerks 2, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks 3. Smith's other movies (which are a very mixed bag) are not connected to them. That said, of those films, I highly recommend Jersey Girl (which came out after this) and Zack & Miri Make A Porno.

You didn't mention, but Jennifer Schwalbach, aka Missy, is Kevin Smith's wife (they met when she was an entertainment journalist; and their daughter played baby Silent Bob). But I hope you stay with the Kevin Smith movies in chronological order. The next one is the first "non-Askewaverse" movies, as there is no Jay and Silent Bob or references to other movies. He went back to Clerks II, but then was trying to find himself, which he's been open in talking about. "Zach and Miri Make a Porno" he realized was trying to be Judd Apatow, and "Cop Out" which he didn't write was trying to be a studio director. After that was "Red State", basically a horror-thriller which doesn't look like anything else he'd done (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3uUp2mle62YnMU), but also started his later stage work. He showed it at Sundance, looking to sell it, and He Who Shall Not Be Named asked him to try to move the screening time because it conflicted with a Jet's playoff game... Smith called BS, said basically "you're here to watch and buy movies, not football, I'm not moving my time, and I'll auction off the rights afterwards. Show up if you want"... he then started an "auction" and bought the rights himself for something like $25. He then started his model of taking it on the road, selling $30 seats to see it with him and others from the movie doing live Q&As after and earned back the budget in a couple of months. So, in terms of "raunchy comedy", he goes far from that, but as someone interested in getting movies made, I think you're in for a great time in seeing someone trying to cut their own path.

But another thing about him: he is almost solely responsible for the breakout success of the Nintendo Entertainment System in America. Seann William Scott was also in Southland Tales. The Orangutan was in Mallrats. The Nubian comic book writer was in Dogma as a gang leaser. Dogma commented on Judd Nelson and the Breakfast Club. Judd Nelson shows up in a later movie as a sheriff. Joey Adams shows up with her sister Trish the Dish. This was described as Dogma without the religion. This was ruined when like every other halfway decent movie it was remade in the uninspired Jay and Silent Bob Reboot which is about what happened to the angel Loki from Dogma.

I have always laughed and enjoyed this movie and I have to say when I initially watched Jay and silent Bob strike back I hadn't seen any of the like previous movies Kevin Smith had out such as Clerk's, Dogma, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, in fact I hadn't even watched Good Will Hunting as well. So when I went back watched all the films that essentially were callbacks in Jay and silent Bob I could actually respect and understand a lot more of those funny references and even more recently I didn't realize at least in a way Kevin Smith helped Ben Affleck get more like spotlight or screen time following dazed and confused i think being the start for Affleck so that's really neat but nonetheless in summary here this is a funny ass film in my humble opinion "Jay and Silent Bob strike back" however if you want to really appreciate the full extent of references and funny callbacks make sure to watch say at least the following movies beforehand. Dogma, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, and Clerk's. You will then have all the preparation you need to grasp a lot more of the comedy in this but Kevin Smith is just brilliant in my opinion also 😂

This was actually the very first Kevin Smith movie I ever saw, in theaters when I was in high school. I thought it was hilarious and as a big Star Wars (and film in general) fan I certainly got a lot of the references, but there were also tons of things that were clearly references to the previous Kevin Smith movies that I didn't get. It inspired me to go rent all of them (on VHS, why yes I am a dinosaur), which of course led to be becoming a huge Kevin Smith fan. Great reaction as always!

Seeing the progress of Kevin Smith. To this point. Then you have to appreciate his just directorial homework like the movie cop out with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan

I'm STILL catching references in this movie. Watching your reaction, I just realized the facility they free Suzanne from is called "Provasic", which is the drug from the movie "The Fugitive". Then they end up in the dam, like the scene in that movie as well (which I knew was a Fugitive reference already, but I just realized the "Provasic" part).

The cast has said that this movie was som much fun to shoot that they almost didn’t get it done. Look up the outtakes, Affleck and Damon almost die laughing. Also Jennifer Schwabach-Smith filmed behind the scenes and they turned the footage into a documentary called “ A Lovely Tea Party” which I believe can be found in KZbin

It's been ages since I've seen this movie and I didn't remember the Wes Craven cameo at all. Jay and Silent Bob had a cameo in Scream 3, which technically makes Alanis Morrisette God in the Scream series.

Love the reactions. One of my favorite movies is Dazed and confused and my favorite TV show is that 70s show seeing I was eighteen in 1976. I remember you saying that 70s show was your favorite. If you go to I think it's season seven or eight Kelso get's a girl pregnant at a concert and she winds up going with her mother to have the baby in another state.Shannon Elizabeth is that girl.😮

Shannon Elizabeth was the Hollywood “It Girl” for about eight seconds after her performance in American Pie.

Damm ! I need to rewatch this movie, so many actors/actresses really famous. There is a sequel of this movie. 34:30 : Shannon Elizabeth was the famous girl in American pie (the webcam's scene) and in Scarie Movie. 34:42 : Seann William Scott was the Stifler's son in American Pie.

Really good, interesting reaction! I've got a soft spot for this film flaws-and-all because it was my first Kevin Smith, but feel like it's not generally regarded as one of his best. Was cool to see you proper enjoy it!

As long as youve seen Smiths movies up to this one, and, most the movies the Cameo actors were from, this movie is HILARIOUS. Otherwise youre like, ....huh? You put in the work, Good for You!!

I got to see Kevin Smith in person . He came to our town and did a comedy / talking bit at our Local theater . It was a blast after the show my brother and I hung around outside and actually caught them coming out to smoke. We had a good half hour of talking with Kev and Jason.. Was awesome !! Great guys .. funny as Hell ! But still . My favorite is Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot ! One thing Kev did was explain a scene from the movie ( Reboot ) to the crowd .. I have to say one of the funnest nights I have had hanging with them and seeing them in person.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, but I was still in film-school-snob mode so I didn't fully appreciate it until a rewatch years later. It did what it was supposed to do - be fun. Just wait until you get to Jay and Silent Bob Reboot... it gets even more meta. Thanks for the reactions!

20:14 - That's actually a good point! Every one remembers him on S.N.L, stand up, and other movies. But this role? Never comes up. I for one can't explain it, it's just as good as any other. 🤷‍♂
