Cleveland Way - Helmsley to Moorland Wild Camp

A good start on the 110 mile Cleveland Way that starts in Helmsley, Yorkshire and circumnavigates the North Yorkshire moors taking in stunning vistas from Sutton Bank and Clay Bank, through historical and charming towns and villages and following the immense and epic cliffs and sea route between Saltburn and Filey. This trail offers a huge variety of terrain, wildlife and scenery as well as quite the variety of weather and livestock encounters.
In this video we cover the first 14 miles from Helmsley, past the Sutton Bank visitor center, hideout from rain storms and finally find a suitable pitch on the edge of the moorland with a beautiful sunset as our reward for the day

Brings back memories CJ. I walked the Cleveland Way last September also. Absolutely loved the trail, although the daily distances I did were a bit silly and I ended up with shin splints 🙈. I did raise £800 for charity though so it was all worthwhile. I’d only just started YouTubing at the time though to do daily videos so family could follow my journey. It was hard work doing all of those miles and then editing on the phone in the evening but I loved every minute of it. Looking forward to following your journey 👍

Nice. When were you out there? It is gorgeous but twice it has beaten me for various reasons. I've never felt the urge to do daily vlogs for upload that day...seems exhausting...but good on ya for the mind of effort and dedication that takes. Much prefer to film then edit and share later.

@@WilderhopeAdventures my first day on the trail was 7th September. I was lucky as I went the week after all of the storms and had mostly lovely weather apart from a few showers on day 1. Yes, the editing daily on a phone wasn’t the easiest but I had promised the family so I kinda felt obliged. Responding to all the comments was a nightmare 🤣

Nice to see Helmsley again, I used to take both of my lads camping at a place 2 miles outside of Helmsley and we always had a great time and only about 45 minutes away from where we live. Shame you missed out on the Abbey as it is really worth seeing and I remember another YT channel doing this walk last year but as there were 2 of them and both had cars they met at the day end section, then drove to the start of the days walk and did that section before driving back to the other car - not as hard core as you! I love the honesty box and 50p flapjacks are half the price of the same in the Lake District. I always love a kissing gate when I have got Mrs Metalman with me, as I always insist on a 2 minute snog, although, when I film it, it always costs me at least 5 subscribers 😂. When I was a kid Sutton Bank was a nightmare to get up with an old car but always superb views from there. Great to see you got a good pitch with a brilliant view and the sun came out - you deserved it! Going to look forward to the rest of this walk and total respect to you for doing that mileage with a camping pack, cheers Alan

Great video, enjoyed it. Local trail to us, so we have visited Sutton bank ourselves! Stunning place, the views there are just quality. We ended up stopping longer than we should at the visitor centre due to a nose bleed 😬😭🤣. Was very busy mind, looked a nice day despite the crap left on the tree. Loved your way of capturing it, footage was so nice and smooth. Good music choices, and a good information throughout. Very good video and has got me really looking forward to when we HOPEFULLY walk the Cleveland way in a couple of years. Great video, atb

Just found your page, amazing conversion on the fiesta. Helmsley is such an amazing place. I supported my brother in his ultra run this year when he ran 80 mile of the Cleveland Way. He started at Guisborough and finished Helmsley. Loved watching your videos, amazjng

Loved the intro, with one of my favourite summer visitors, the swallows, zipping over the meadow. I have a real attachment to that part of the world. It is a shame that the CW bypasses Rievaulx Abbey too as it probably one of the very best. After 2020, I hope I can be back up there this year. Cheers, Chris

What time of year did you do this walk? I use boots as most of the trails are muddy/boggy and like to keep my feet dry as approach shoes can get swamped. Love the music and it’s your signature theme. Great video and looking forward to the rest of the Cleveland way.

I did this the second week of September. I wear trail runners or light walking shoes for three seasons but by winter I'm in rubber boots and don't do long hikes. And glad you like the music.

Really nice video. I was worrying for you where you would find a decent camp spot . I ve done the Cleveland Way twice now from both directions but you dropped on a lovely spot by the tree s . I ll have to remember that next time I go that way . I just was wondering what your total pack weight was ?. The first few days are hard to find stock up places so the pack weight increases. Nice to see the dogs carrying their little packs .They look very well behaved and don t need leads on passing animals .What tent did you use ?

Thank you :-) I was worried about a camp spot too, but that place was perfect. My pack weight for a full 7 days of food and 2 liters of water is around 30lbs...that's usually for wilderness adventures in the US though. It was about 5lbs lighter on this trip as I had a food resupply half way through. Dogs carry their own food and that's it...they are capable of carrying something to save my back and shoulders :-D Rarely do they need leads around livestock as they are trained working dogs. I do in small fields where sheep are more skittish and prone to run and now Cody is mostly deaf he doesn't hear the commands as well any more. Tent I used in this video is the Tarptent Stratospire Li but I didn't like it and now have the Tarptent Double Rainbow Li which I LOVE

I think my pack weight maxed out at around 25lbs with food and water. I tend to go for lightweight (not quite ultra-light due to the dogs and wanting to be warm). My base weight is around 14lbs. The West Highland Way is pretty stunning...a hike I did in 2019 but didn't film as it was pre-channel times.

@@Andyb2379 I feel like that's quite a moderate weight compared to a lot of channels and people I have watched. It's an average weight for the PCT/CDT (remember pounds, not kgs) I have never hiked in boots and find the British obsession with boots quite weird. I get the need in winter, but not in the other three seasons. There are more groomed and graveled trails in this country than anywhere I've ever hiked...boots really aren't needed unless you are cross-country or have genuinely weak ankles. But those are just my opinions and not medical facts

@@MetallicrealitE I would say that solo wild camping in really remote places is the safest place you can be, accidents not withstanding. But that is what the community here is all about...inspiring people, helping them get past the boundaries of what they think they can't do but want to, and supporting them as they do so :-) I think you'll get there

What is your new backpack? Why did you move from the Osprey?

The pack I have is the ZPacks Arc Haul. I use them interchangeably, depending on what I feel like carrying. This is a much lighter pack, and more water resistant which I wanted for this trail with the "chance of showers".

@@pmahnke I love the Arc Haul but it does tend to max out at around 30lbs for comfort. I used this pack extensively in the US for 7-day trips without resupply and loved it. I like the Arc on all packs, so limited for companies who use the trampoline design. The Arc Haul is very well made and mine is from 2016 with very little appearance of wear. The only pack that rivals it, in my opinion, is the older 2017 version of the Osprey Exos (which I also own). I used to own a Duplex and loved that also...kinda miss it. In 2020 it was a toss up between getting another Duplex (sold the first one for a TT Strat Li which I ended up hating) and my current TT Double Rainbow Li which I LOVE
