I see a lot of people complaining how Mario 2 was a dream but when I was a kid, and reading the instruction manuall, I was always under the assumption that it was another world in a dream world, or something to that effect. I still enjoyed the game but remembered being very disappointed that it wasn't two player.

Fun fact: The music in this original ending was cribbed from "Mary France" by Jean-Jacques Perry, who composed a few things you might already know: "The Little Ships" was the music used in the viral video "Going to the Store", "Brazillian Flower" played in the background of the Rainbow Bunchie webpage, and he was half of the duo Perry and Kingsley, whose "Baroque Hoedown" was the basis of the theme from Disneyland's Electrical Parade.

The ending theme is very similare to the one from Mario 3. I think it's less audible in mario 2 (USA) but even it's that version it's the same song, despites Mario 3 add some part. I have never realised that before.

The American _Mario 2_ is actually closer to Nintendo's planned _Super Mario Bros_ sequel than _The Lost Levels_. Nintendo only made _The Lost Levels_ because their prototype for _Super Mario Bros. 2_ was turned into _Doki Doki Panic_ as the result of a promotional deal with Fuji TV, and _Doki Doki Panic_ was ironically turned back into the _Super Mario Bros_ sequel that it was supposed to be after Nintendo of America decided that it would be too impractical to release _The Lost Levels_ in the United States.

So this isn't a "high standard" game? I don't know, I felt the ability to backtrack in levels, having some vertical scrolling areas, more interactivity with the environment by picking up blocks and such, having bosses besides the villain were improvements over the first SMB game personally. I felt all the NES SMB games were pretty well made personally, Also, even "Doki Doki Panic" was made by the same people as the Mario series if you look at the end credits. Including Miyamoto AKA "Miyahan."

There is a Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan. It is just so hard that they chose not to release it in the West and instead modified Doki Doki Panic. The original Mario Bros 2 (Japan) can be found as Super Mario Bros Lost Levels on Mario Allstars on the SNES. It is also now available on Wii Virtual Console.

That's correct, Howard Phillips (the key man for Nintendo of America in its early years) was not happy with the original Japanese Mario 2 after having playtested it. His frustration over it is summed up as: _"As I continued to play, I found that Super Mario Bros. 2 asked me again and again to take a leap of faith and each of those leaps resulted in my immediate death. This was not a fun game to play. It was punishment. Undeserved punishment. I put down my controller astonished that Mr. Miyamoto had chosen to design such a painful game."_ Not just the way you feel about how hard it is, Mr. Phillips, but also it being a continuation of the first release from 1985, using essentially the same graphics but in reconfigured levels.

I think doki doki panic also got some things from super mario bros, as the stars, coins, the POW power, design the last sub-level like a castle with the level boss, and using some vases as pipes.

Yes! That is Koji Kondo back in the 1980s, many Japanese staffers had nicknames such as Shigeru Miyamoto being known as Miyahon, or Takashi Tekuza being Ten Ten , or Keiji Inafune (Capcom) being Inafking

Right because they wanted to stay at Nintendo, and so if Miyamoto, Tezuka and Kondo et al. all used their real names at this early stage, then given their popularity they may have been approached by other game companies to leave Nintendo to join them. This was exactly what happened with Atari, which by 1982 had lost some of their original programmers and designers to other companies like Activision. Another factor as to Nintendo's key men using pseudonyms in game credits during their early years was due to the text string limits associated with the NES hardware. Miyamoto's incognito surname, Miyahon, was the result of using the On'yomi pronunciation for the final character, 本, in his surname ("moto" being the Kun'yomi reading for 本). It was not until Super Mario World and then The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, that Nintendo's early production and design staff finally felt comfortable using their real names.

@rmazing This was a Famicom Disk System Game. It was on a floppy disk with two sides. Side A had all the cutscenes, and you had to switch to Side B to actually play the game. In this case, you had to switch to Side A again to see the ending scene.

@Pnloxo Shigero Miyamoto creator of Mario worked on this game as well. The real Super Mario Bros 2 (know today as the lost levels) was only released in japan because they thought it was to hard. Miyamoto then decided to give this one a makeover to please the american market with another mario game.

Actually, SMB2 had some improvements over this one to, you guys. For one thing you can't run in DDP. Also SMB2 had better sound effects (in my opinion, at least. I love the boss howls in SMB2 better then the buzz sound in DDP) and if you look at site comparisons, some of the character, and background object, and item animations were improved in SMB2. Not to mention SMB2 had a new boss Clawgrip added to World 5-3. So don't completely blindly bash SMB2, guys. I felt it had some improvements.

The only real difference between Doki Doki Panic and the original US Mario 2 on the NES was a few graphic changes i.e. changing the main cast to Mario and co., changing the head/faces to Eagles, changing the weird heads to turtle shells,ect. there was no changes to the core gameplay until the re-release in Super mario all stars and the GBA Super Mario Advance

It is because it is the same game. Doki Doki Panic was the original game that was released first in Japan, and then changed into Mario Bros 2 in the West. There is no "Mario Bros 2" in Japan.

this version is infirior and weird compared with smb2, since the dpcm soundchannel was in most cases not used etc,,, weird is the fact that you had to flip the game at one point like a cassette, ,m happy with my smb2 game cuzz it has simmilair themas,graphics to smb3,and despites the different gameplay, it perfectly fits in the smb sequel.
