Last year for my English final project we had to do a report on a singer who wrote their own songs. I did Sia because I really love her songs so much and I love her. The girl who went before me did a presentation about Beyoncé, and talked a lot about the meaning of Pretty Hurts and why Beyoncé wrote it. It was really awkward when I went up next and had to tell the whole class that Sia actually wrote Pretty Hurts. That girl was pretty embarrassed and got points off for not doing enough research.

To be fair to the other girl, Beyonce exploits a legality which means she can claim songwriting credits on songs that she has had no imput on. So she might not have known.

I don't understand why people are getting all mad at artists who sing and get popular for Sia's music. That's what she chose to do with it, and those artists are doing nothing wrong by singing her songs. It happens all the time and is not "stealing," as so many ignorant people are calling it.
@caramelspice7244
@caramelspice7244 10 жыл бұрын
Exactly, this is nothing new. Celine and Whitney are legends who sang songs written by someone else, for example, and their talent is undeniable. No one should feel sorry, thinking people are "taking" Sia's songs. She's doing what she loves, while getting paid a lot to do it.
@TheKingOfTrolling
@TheKingOfTrolling 10 жыл бұрын
Caramel Spice She got less than a couple hundred thousand dollars for the some "Diamonds" when Rihanna made millions. So, no, she would of made a lot more if she kept the song for herself. Sia is underrated. Rihanna is overrated. Also, the reason are a lot of people are getting mad is because Rihanna did the song the exact way Sia did in the demo, it shows she doesn't do her own thing and takes it from other artists. Rihanna basically did a extact cover of Sia's demo, but she made millions while Sia got less than a 5% cut.

@caramelspice7244
@caramelspice7244 10 жыл бұрын
Chris Ice That's true, but it was her choice, and I doubt all she ever got was "a couple hundred thousand." She is a singer/songwriter who has made it known that she does not want to be in the limelight like other singers. She enjoys privacy. She has the power over her songs. It's not always about money. People like Diane Warren, for example, have enjoyed writing songs for the joy of it, knowing they won't get the amount of fame or money that the singer will.

Am I the only one that's glad that Rihanna rejected Sia's song "Cheap Thrills"? I think it sounds AMAZING how it is. I wouldn't like it as much if Rihanna sang it. I think Sia should just sing all of the songs she writes since she has such a beautiful and unique voice. I know I'd defiantly enjoy them all.

Actually the money IS in writing the songs, not performing them. It's the reason why Dolly Parton got millions of $$$ for Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You." It's also the reason why big stars will change a couple of words or a single line in a song, and get co-writing credits (and i'm looking directly at you Madonna and Beyonce). They're not stupid -- they know where the bucks come from.

What people fail to understand is that you have great performers like Beyoncé and writing may not be their best thing. Then you have great song writers like Sia but they can't perform. But when they come together they make something amazing and they both get paid. It's very rare that you get an artist like Prince who can sing, play almost every instrument, and can perform exceptionally well.

taylor HOLLA I'm not saying she can't sing live. But she doesn't even show her face. Who would want to pay for a Sia concert and she's turned around or laying on her stomach the whole time? To be a great performer you have to be able to give a show to make people want to watch you like Beyonce. There are lots of great singers out there but they're boring to watch like Jennifer Hudson.
@troopleader9218

Jasmine Jones If that was the case Whitney Houston and Celine Dion wouldn't have made a dime...neither one of them "gives a show". Their voices were enough.

Troop Leader You don't have to know how to dance or do magic tricks to perform. Some people are just boring. For example Jennifer Hudson can sing but she can't perform. Fantasia on the other hand can perform exceptionally well. And she doesn't dance but she pulls you in and make you want to watch her. Watch her Pattie Labelle tribute to see what I'm talking about.

Laleen Jonas I think she busts out a song in a matter of 1-2 hours, sends it off, gets a paycheck. When the song ends up being really personal or really special, she keeps it and puts it on her album with other songs she writes specifically for her. That is just my guess though. She has this unique ability to have good yet catchy songs pour out of her.

***** I know exactly what you mean. In this era where artists just churn out one pop record after another for money, Sia's voice actually makes me feel something. I honestly can't imagine anyone else being able to sing this song as well as Sia - not Beyoncé and certainly not Katy Perry. The one person who might (emphasis on might) be able to sing it well - or at least better than anyone who tries to cover the song - is Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy. But yeah, you're absolutely right. 'A good voice' is certainly not enough for a track like 'Elastic Heart'. Sia has it all - the voice and the heart.

Does anyone else feel cheated by the music industry? You have writers who don't get credit when singers get awards. You think there is a deeper story behind the music when it's written and sang by an artist. But you later find the artist didn't write it and you find it's made in 14 minutes by a person who herself admits the music doesn't touch her and distributed around like a cheap prostitute for public fame illusion....
@theywasworkingonthetires.5110
@theywasworkingonthetires.5110 10 жыл бұрын
You only feel cheated because you know nothing of the machine that is the pop music industry. I knew all of this by the time I was in my teens. The music business is just that....A business. They are investing in employers (Beyoncé, Rihanna, etc) to sell a product (pop music). With the millions of dollars invested into these employees, they want to be sure that they see the greatest ROI (Return On Investment) from every so called "pop artist" they employ. This means that they are not going to leave the song writing up to them, as that would be taking a great risk. So They hire a huge team of writers, producers, a marketing team etc to do the majority of the creating. The "artist" then presents and sells the finished product to you much like a car salesman sells you a car. So remember the next time you hear that catchy One Direction song, understand that there was a HUGE team of writers and producers behind that hit, not Harry Styles.

ShaunMoto125 This is why you don't listen to most music on the radio and wait a couple years after the "in" feel is gone. You then sort through the rubble for a rare gem.
@piperpilot26

Caviar Liberta Still not worth it. The radio represents probably 2% of the music that is actually being made in the world. It's what I like to refer to as the 'McDonalds" of music. Limiting your music intake by just listening to the radio is going to hinder your musical taste. Try leaving the confines of the radio, it's truly amazing what you'll find.
@laleenjonas3048
@laleenjonas3048 10 жыл бұрын
I find it awful that directors shoot a video and than the singer gets a prize on the VMA's. 90% of today's pop music scene consists of empty singers, who have to sing and be hot and that is it. But they still get all the credit. They sing whatever they can get and whatever is believed to make money, without any sense for the music art. Than there are 5% of them who write their music and it sucks and than there are the 5% who are actually good. Someone has to be. So we all now that the world's music in general isn't what it used to be.
@annieb2567
@annieb2567 10 жыл бұрын
That's because it's an industry It's about business Artistry does appear at times and artists can be passionate about performing but they mostly want to profit off of you. If you don't like it don't buy music or go to concerts, and don't talk about the artists because not being mentioned is the worse for them because they are irrelevant. And producers and songwriters actually make a lot of royalties, the artists have to sell out concerts to make any money. And appear on tv shows. And the career lasts a lot longer for behind the scenes because it doesn't matter our age, appearance, or popularity. You don't have the criticism from the public eye either. So while they don't get awards they do get a lot of other perks. (And when albums win awards actually it's for everyone who worked on it not just the singer)

Yasss she wrote pretty hurts. She's a genius like for real! I'm a little disappointed in all these artists. They should have given a little credit and not hide her behind her lyrics. I guess their fame would be on the spot? Idk. Sia is my idol and I love how she writes such powerful songs like titanium and pretty hurts, etc. I love her!

Sia doesn't even want fame. After the alcohol and drug addictions, She decided to write songs to pop artist. We live in a judgmental world there fame can cause problems to someone's life.

well I do know that in a documentary Beyoncé made on her visual album, she talked about how she collaborated with her idols (which she included Sia) to help and inspire her to make her album. So at least Beyoncé did lol.

If you notice, all these songs are similar in a way.. I don't know how to explain it but they're very deep and typically about either loving yourself or about love in general

stunningarrayof true, but then again, some of her songs are emotionally powerful, and its the deep music mixed with key phrases that make her the genius.

I'm not a big fan of Sia or Rihanah, but come on. Yeah, that song is RIDICULOUSLY repetitive but it does have some pretty good lyrics that deserve recognition. "Find light in a beautiful sea, I chose to be happy. You and I are like diamonds in the sky. You're a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy. When you hold me, I'm alive." "I knew we'd become one right away. At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays." "We are beautiful like diamonds in the sky." "Palms rise to the universe, as we, Moonshine and Molly, feel the warmth will never die." Their are other lyrics. So stfu.
