I got flashbacks of etiquette training with my uncle when I was 5. I remember the first time he began my etiquette training too. I was eating and he suddenly stopped what he was doing and stared at me until I stopped and asked him why he was staring at me. He told me, "you are to take a bite, put your fork and knife down, masticate your food well. Do not pick up your fork until you finish that bite, do not talk while eating. Once you finish that bite, it is advised that you engage in conversation with those at the table. Don't just keep eating. Dinner is a social event that must have discussion. Do not drink your beverage too quickly. If you have drank more than twice during a course, then you are drinking too quickly. Enjoy your food. It is not a rush. Savor each bite properly. Discuss the flavors with your friends." He drilled that into me, to the point that in public settings I was the most well behaved 6 year old any waiter had ever seen

To anyone get mad at them saying "ladies don't swear" I promise you that its not sexist. She said that because it was all ladies at the table. If it were all guys she would instead say, "gentlemen don't swear." In a formal setting, swearinh is forbidden.

The whole point of etiquette is to make people feel comfortable in social situations. More focus on questions like Lily's (I hate the food at this dinner party...what now?) would have been great to see. Also how to make dinner conversation, how to make a toast... rather than which hand to pick up your napkin with. Being an entertaining and memorable guest is more important than sitting up straight.

Carrie Lynn that depends on your social circles, in my mother's side of the family I could get away with eating with my fingers. on my father's side of the family we need to show proper etiquette, including putting your fork and knife in a v with the knife through the middle of the forks prongs showing you didn't not like the meal crossing your knife and fork like a + sign to show you want to move on to the next course, a v to say you have not finished your meal and fork and knife next to each other pointing at 12 o'clock to show you are finished

If you hate the food upon tasting it you take your napkin and spit into it. You only do this once. Then you proceed to cut up everything on the plate slowly, so it appears as if you are eating it. If ppl are still eating by the time you finish, you start dunking and mixing stuff together. For every cut you do of food and act of dunking and/or mixing you do, then you tale a sip of water or whatever drink you are drinking. Try to excuse yourself for a bit and place your silverware in the done position. Then you go to the bathroom for about 5 minutes and come back. Your food should be gone by then.

I am the same way. I grew up with these manners taught to me, and my grandmother always corrected our table manners saying "Well what if you were having dinner at the White House and out of habit you started chewing with your mouth open." And my father taught me to always hold the door open for others.

It's just a different culture. I was brought up like this as well because I'm European. In America they just eat different. I mostly see them cutting everything into pieces on the plate, then put the fork in their right hand and shovel the food in. It's so odd (and bad manners to me) but it's a cultural thing and totally normal for them. Just a manner of tradition I guess :)

Serenata I think it's most countries outside of North America. Etiquette has been under appreciated and stigmatized since the late 60s. Persians still learn and follow a lot of these manners for example.

I also had to take etiquette classes. I feel as if I am part of something that is dying though since there aren't many people with the same manners. Linn Jansson I think there is a misconception in this. Acting like a lady and stopping yourself from being loud or cursing are 2 different things. Julie Andrews is the epitome of class and grace and she swears like the queen that she is. I am a 17 year-old boy and I have never cursed in my life and neither am I planning on doing it. Manners aren't just for a gender. They are universal. Americans don't. I've been there several times and often see people, even at restaurants, not eating properly with a knife and fork. As a European this is second nature to me. I often got asked "why do you eat so fancy?!". I often wanted to reply "why do you eat like a 5-year-old?!" Haha :) The fact is that culture is just different! To us, Americans eat like children, but to them it is totally normal and OK! It's very interesting to experience these differences while travelling. I always say, when in Rome do as the Romans :) try to follow the custom of the country you are in.

I don't understand all the people getting upset over her saying ladies don't swear. This was an class on basic manners for formal events or situations. If people are at a classy event or have a job interview they should show manners in not having to swear. There are way better ways to describe something than using an explicative. Using both utensils at the same time is the continental (European) way of eating. In the US it is also considered appropriate the cut your food, set your knife down and switch the fork to the right hand before proceeding, tines up. The key is still to cut only one or two bites at a time. Personally I think as long as you're reasonably polite and follow basic table manners everything will be just fine.
