'Continue' starts at the position where you entered the screen the last time. IIRC whenever a new screen loads an autosave is created. If you do something on the new screen and end the game, it won't be saved via autosave/continue.

You have to load the save, never continue because that loads an autosave which is always going to be a little before your actual save
