I had a demo disc with a Dark Alliance 1 demo on it, and was super into it. I played it over and over, and eventually got the game. I played it through many times, but never got the sequel until years later. I never got the Champions games until recently, because as a kid I thought they were exclusively online games, and we didn't have high speed internet for online gaming so I ignorantly didn't bother. Nowadays I have both DA and the Champions duology, both on original hardware and re-releases in the case of DA1&2. I still play them all, and love them to death.

Played all of them except the last two. All of the games were such a horrible experience because of the emulation but Champions was by far the worst. I played Dark Alliance 1&2 and Champions with a friend in co-op on the original Playstation 2 and we REALLY enjoyed them. Much later I used the emulation for them and the only one that didn't had the problems was Dark Alliance 1 and it still had a massive drop in the Black Tower. I picked up the games again after they were released on the PC and yeah my favorite is still Dark Alliance 2 and it was really satisfyingly playing them again without the slowdowns. It also think the second game has almost perfect lvl of balance between the classes, something that Champions in my eyes lacked, like the Dark Knight always felt pretty gimmicky with worse melee and worse spells than their respective classes, and the ranger class felt also pretty weak. I don't know about Return to Arms because I just couldn't suffer through the slowdowns and that's the only one that my friend didn't have on PS2. I remember on some forums back when I tried emulating them that people were always saying that Snowblind engine was never emulation friendly and that no matter what the specs of the PC is it will almost always have bad performance issues in some parts.

Champions of Norrath and Return to Arms are my favorite action RPGs of all time. They are really great PS2 game in general. A while back I posted in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance Steam community, asking how likely it would be that the devs would ever make a remaster of Champions of Norrath, and the answer seemed to be that they were interested in doing it but licensing issues made it very unlikely that it would ever happen.

Just because I'm that guy, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and Dungeons and Dragons Dark Alliance actually take place in the same universe, that is, the Forgotten Realms (aka, the dungeons and dragons universe). Baldur's Gate is a city-state in that world, situated on the Sword Coast, which is south of Icewind Dale.

These games are like comfort food for me. There is something very zen-like, mashing your way through dungeons while collecting loot and grinding levels. There are two more games from SOE that look and play like the Snowblind Studios games: Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom for PS3 and Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade for PSP.

One thing you missed in dark alliance by only playing through once was some special interactions with certain bosses based on playing different classes. For instance the drow has special dialog when talking to the elf player character. Note that the interaction is, if i remember correctly, based on player 1 when playing multiplayer. Though it could also be based on which player triggered the cutscene, i dont honestly remember for certain. Also both baldur's gate and icewind dale are part of Faerun, an expansion to dnd (if you look up a map, icewind dale is in the north west corner and baldur's gate is about halfway down the coast. Even the newest dnd movie that came out last year is set in this world). Drizzt, the dark elf ranger in icewind dale is a secret unlockable character in baldur's gate 1&2 due to his popularity within the forgotten realms novels. The legend of drizzt began with the icewind dale trilogy in 1988 by R.A. Salvatore and now is currently 39 books long.

some champions return to arms classes peak at different times. the dark elf gets better once it can finally raise an undead army it's other skills are just going to keep it alive. the wood elf is god tier almost from the start though. the wizard is built for the back line because their skill damage doesn't seem to scale. berserker is like an lower grade wood elf. the shaman is interesting with the knock back skill they get and a pet. however the high elves are just strait healers with low damage numbers. the only reason that high elves are stronger than wizards is because wizards dress in silk and can't carry a 2 handed mace.

I still have the Dark Alliance 1 and 2, and the two Champions of Norrath games, and still play it from time to time. Great games. Could say that it is one of my favorites on the PS2, but the thing is, that PS2 has soooo many great games that the list of "favorit" games is longer then "didnt like that". ;) Either way, they are realy good if you want that RPG action adventure looting feeling. After playing BG Dark Alliance 1 for my self, I then had the fortune of playing all these with a friend, in co-op. Even playing the first game once more. It was a blast and was mush more fun then singel player. Probably played thrue these games once with each character/class and played thrue on each difficulty, and in Champions of Norrath games, tried almost both good and evil side with each character. Even the secret character in "BG Dark Alliance 2" (Drizzt, famous D&D character). Extra note: I also played that spin-off "Fallout" game for the PS2, called "Brotherhood of Steel". It is in the same style as these games. It is though not in lore canon, and a bit jank. But still fun if you like these types of games, with a friend. And btw, in Champions of Norrath you can be up to 4 player in co-op. Never tried more then 2 though. But that sounds like some straight up arcady action stuff. Cheers.

BG Dark Alliance 2 has a special place in my heart as I remember playing the hell out of it on XBOX alongside KOTOR 2. The moment I saw it on the Switch and saw it worked as it did back then! I had to buy it (thankfully I waited for a sale! I'm not made of money now a days to be buying EVERYONE game LOL! That and I'm just not into the FULL PRICE game anymore! I'm willing to wait for a sale for even my FAVORITE games that I WANT to day 1, but don't want to because of my stance! I did put a limit on games I'll buy outside a sale at full price to about 3 a year! As in THREE GAMES NO MATTER WHAT! So I have to choose wisely! And this one appeared AFTER I bought game 3 of that year) and frankly I still love it! I see what Hack and Slashers I played after it like Diablo 3 did better, but I see where they messed up and why these are still better (sometimes streamlines can be good to make them simple and less complicated, but other times it can make the game BORING and uninteresting REAL FAST! As this one has ALOT to do that brought me back to playing it compared to Diablo 3 where I couldn't find the energy to play a different character then my first character. Where I had fun both by myself and with my brothers (and sister) in multiplayer (Save files were FULL of each of us having a character and only using that character! Me and my little sister were stuck with the girls because my little brothers are idiots who don't want to play no "Stinking girl" being young at the time "Girls have cooties" idiots! Me I long passed that stage in 3rd grade and by this time I was at the end of Middle school so I played ALOT of games and a few with female protagonist so didn't care! I was focused on their CLASSES and I was the only one who knew how to HEAL AND SUPPORT unlike the "Leeroy Jenkins BEFORE anyone knew his name" brigade that was my younger siblings that I had to carry! Sad I can't use SOME builds anymore because of lack of Multiplayer or more people to play with! But I'm a solo man!)

Also, another Snowblind engine game is Fallout Brotherhood of Steel, which isn't great but is nowhere near as bad as it's been made out to be. A Bard's Tale on PS2, which also got remastered on modern hardware, was also a Snowblind engine game. I think I've commented on all this before on another of your videos. Where I believe I also commented on Dungeons & Dragons Heroes on Xbox, which I thought was a Snowblind Engine game but it turns out it was a cynical ripoff of that with much, much worse performance. However it's a super fun game. And lastly, the company that developed the Dark Alliance remasters has HINTED at trying to get the Champions games done, but I haven't heard anything on that subject in a year or more. Currently its rights are split between the property under Daybreak Studios, and the game itself is owned by SCEA, but I'm pretty sure Daybreak said they were cool with it, they're pretty chill, even gave their blessing to private EQ servers. So I guess the big hurdle is SCEA, and we all know how they feel about attractive women, soooo... Oh, also, Dark Alliance on PS5, I put a hunk of time into it but never finished it, it's just living on my shelf now. BY FAR the Ranger is the most solo capable character. All the characters are viable solo though, they just all have unique mechanics that makes them kinda hit and miss to figure out, been awhile though so I don't remember the specifics very well, I just remember going back to the Thor At Home guy and finding out he was pretty decent with some change...

I enjoyed the champions of norrath and baulders gate games much more than Diablo. Would love to see THQ Nordic touch up champions of Norrath.

The Norrath games are so much fun, I'm a bit biased as an Everquest player but I was gutted when DA 1&2 were re released but not the champions games. I'd pay good money to play online multiplayer again on those...

Both baldurs gate games were super broken. You could have infinite gold within the first 15 mins of the game

Dark alliance 1 and 2 have silly difficulties. Easy is meant for new level 1 characters. Normal and hard is for leveled characters.

I feel like ur criticism of dark alliance was kinda harsh. Personally I thought that game was fun. The controls never felt clunky to me. But I can’t remember if I was using a mouse and keyboard or not.

It's crazy how good the character models look in BGDA1 compared to Neverwinter Nights, a game that came out 1 year later! In NWN they look blocky, the faces are static and they are literally ham-fisted.

I still have DA1 and DA2. And Champions of Norrath and Return to Arms. They still look amazing today. I hope they remake Champions and Return to Arms 🙏🏽
