That’s what trainers are paid to do. If the owners don’t know how to ask the dog to do what they want, the dog gets confused, and mislabeled as being bad. As soon as the owners are taught how to communicate with the dog, things fall into place.

We adopted a dog right before covid hits, so we were distant to each other all the time. When we were celebrating my birthday we hugged my dog started barking and became really protective. I said It's ok and hugged more and laugh to show it's ok, no one is hurting me. It must look ridiculous me and my mom hugging, walking around the house cheek to cheek lol. But he got use to it afterwards.

Random dog trainer here! Usually that's a pretty safe assumption but there are other causes. Especially with small dogs, owners often just pick them up or move them around and that makes the dog feel very unsafe and insecure because he doesn't have control even over his body. Owners also will allow a small dog to feel more uncomfortable than they would a large dog because it's less likely to cause serious damage if it snaps. So with little dogs who act insecure, I like to emphasize maximizing their agency, and not picking them up without getting permission first, respecting them as thinking adult beings, and responding to their stress signals. Finally, you have to teach the dog that he doesn't need to solve problems because you are there and will take care of dangerous stuff so he doesn't have to. That's mostly about responding to his cues and using body language to communicate when you are taking control of a situation that's making the dog uncomfortable. Great early socialization done in a way that prevents bad experiences and gives lots of different fun experiences for a puppy will prevent a lot of human reactivity, but with little dogs like this I usually find that they also don't get the kind of normal respect you would give to a larger dog, and until you shift that owner behavior, it's very hard to teach the dog to meet new people with the owner around. Trauma and bad experiences also factor in, but usually there's something more going on. I also look for signs of pain or health problems, because when a dog doesn't feel well they get tired, defensive and grumpy like people do.

You can use any fairly unique sound. It doesn't have to be a clicker.. you could even do a snap of your fingers if you want, which is what I use. It's unique enough that they understand if they hear that sound they look at me. Using a snap also means you always have access to it.. like you can't forget it at home and not have it on you. It's also fun when you have dogs trained to it because you can literally snap your fingers and they listen. A lot of people always look at me like "How did you.. is that your superpower?" lol

@Amelia Bastien It can seriously be any somewhat unique sound. You don't want something they'll always hear. You could even whistle if you want. As long as it's a rarely used sound. I prefer snapping since it's easy and fairly loud. Remember not to use it too much though. I use it as a kind of last resort. I also pair it with a premium treat on occasion.

@@maryapatterson Uh... There were owners saying they were completely fine with their dogs being electrocuted by an electric mat by their door. Right after Victoria said it was extremely painful! If her finger hurt imagine it on a dog's paw pad. Those were horrible owners. Oh, and one time, there was this young man who had an aggressive dog and looked like he only wanted to look cool. His dog apparently bit someone and was put down, I believe there was an article about it and it said something along those lines. Most owners here are horrible, face it, but at least some change. It cannot be justified what they've done however. Their past selves deserve to be talked down on, and in my opinion, it should give them a reason to change or stay changed.
