For someone to think that you can do alterations and not know how to make an actual dress just shows how ignorant that person is... To do alterations, you have to deconstruct the garment in some cases, and then put it back together, which means you have to know how the construction works in the first place people.🤦🏾‍♀️ Girl I don't even know why you answered that question.

agreed! saying something like "all you can do is alterations" is such a weird criticism to me, because even if it was true and "all" she could do was alterations, that's still way more than the average person knows to do, especially alterations on formal dresses and gowns

Agreed! 👍 I'd also argue that a lot of alterations are far harder than making the dress from scratch. That's because, when you make it from scratch, you can pick out everything you work with, make sure you have ample material, etc. When you're doing alterations, you have to work with what the original dressmaker has left you with (or have a far harder time sourcing matching materials).

I can make my own clothes but any alterations beyond hemming, fixing factory mistakes, or repairs scares me to no end. You have to be able to understand how it's made just by looking at it. That is not a skill I have despite having made multiple dresses.

absolutely. I've had people ask why I make my own clothes from scratch when I can "just" alter them, because I do also do alterations. It's 100% legit, making from scratch is almost always easier than altering an existing piece.

I'm just a beginner in sewing. Currently trying to make a basic shirt based on my measurments. I made drafts in a cheap fabric; when something is wrong, It tried at first to alterate it. But now, I'm just: "nah, I'm doing it all over again". ^^'

The key to making a skirt or the measurements. Measure around your waist, measure around your hips/buttocks, both of those measurements cut in half because we work with half the body and patterns. Then measure from waist to hip and hip to knees, also use a hip curve ruler for the waist to hip. Depending on how curving you are compared to your waist you may have darts on the front and back part of your skirt pattern. ​@@grenade8572

I’m a full grown adult who doesn’t want their dresses cut up to my surprise 😂 Sadly these days it seems you can either cover 100% of your skin or none of it. I wish there were more in between options, for all ages. Just because I don’t want to walk around practically naked doesn’t mean I don’t want to show off my body!

Beautiful work! It must be frustrating sometimes to have people doubt your capabilities because you have chosen to specialize in alterations. I’m glad that sweet young lady listened to your advice and let you make her dress rather than getting scammed. Finally someone with some brains! Please pass on my compliments on her choice-she looks gorgeous. Hope she didn’t fuss over the train too much. That’s always my concern. Are you going to be able to walk with gown that long? But the girls love them and they are beautiful. At least they are when someone isn’t trying to steal their money.
