This one was a lot of fun! Client brought the vehicle in after replacing the engine, and informed us that it spins over but doesn’t start. This one took some serious detective work to pinpoint the root cause. But it’s so satisfying when you can find problems like this. We hope this step by step diagnosis helps! Enjoy!

I was listening to you talk about people complaining about your direction with the 4 Runner and always hookup a scan tool first. Most of the time criticism comes from people who don’t work in the industry. I am a 25 year Toyota tech up in the Canadian salt belt and my experience decided what direction I start with my diagnosis on every vehicle I work on. I think you do a great job with showing your process to finding the fault. That’s what I’ve really learned from watching your vehicles. Good job, and thanks for sharing your experience!!!

I knew it, only because I've seen it before. The car I fixed was at 3 other shops and then I fixed it, I only have a cheap 2 channel scope but it was enough to see the cam to crank signal was off(wish I had the ats escope, love watching Bernies videos) it was a Subaru Impreza but has the same basic setup with the tone ring behind the flywheel.

Thanks for that wonderful video with a step by step approach to the issue that turned out to be the tone-ring put in the wrong position. Reminded me of a shop that called me to check on a BMW x5 3.0d e70 that the garage had just done an engine overhaul on but now after putting everything together it totally refused to start. The good known cam and crank waveforms from the Rotkee website helped me realize that the tone ring or reluctor wheel as they call it at times had been placed in the wrong position and for that one once we had the transmission out again we found that there was actually no dowel pin in the hole where it should have been and so just by locating the reluctor wheel in its official position by checking on a similar car that was a few miles away helped a great deal and it was able to fire up and just like you said I treasured that Rotkee website as it provided the basis for my follow-up diagnosis on that particular car. Always a pleasure seeing the amount of research and energy and logical thinking and lots more that you put into solving issues like this. Kindly keep up the fantastic job and we are following closely as always. A wonderful team to be around for sure.

Another great lesson. Yes, it can be a pain to find a known good. I run into as well. One thing I did want to point out is that after the code clear those that came back were permanent codes, not current or history. So those are mode 10 codes you can't and won't clear until whatever the drive cycle may be until the PCM clears them itself. If I'm wrong let me know.

Kicked a tech off a job when he was hammering a flywheel on with an impact because it wouldn’t go. Alignment dowel stuck out 1/2” and it wasn’t even close. Luckily he didn’t wreck the crank. I didn’t let him work on anything by himself again. He finally quit. Boss wouldn’t let him go. He was only there a few weeks.

A friend of mine has a Nissan Murano that a mechanic installed a used engine on also. That engine will not start unless he sprays carb cleaner. I put a scope on the crank sensor and there is a signal, but the voltage is at 8 volts. The service manual says it should be at around 1.6 at idle. We're loading a new crank sensor into the cannon 🤞

The crank signal was not a constant amplitude on the problem car. I'm curious if moving the flex plate so that the pin is now aligned has fixed that anomaly. After all, if the plate was slightly askew then the pickup would read a slightly sinusoidal amplitude.

I would say it’s probably because a lot of techs take what the scan tool says to literally and go down a rabbit hole. I use to be the same way. With a decent amount of knowledge you can figure out what’s wrong with most concerns without it. But it is a great tool to have. Just my thoughts
@FREERIDE270
@FREERIDE270 3 ай бұрын
@@gamestava I agree with you that there's a lot of tech's who base their diagnosis solely off dtc's and data using a scan tool but that's not what will lead you down a rabbit hole. lacking experience on operations /functions of the scan tool along with the knowledge to read and understand what data you are collecting. What I don't agree with is scan tool data causing tech's to misdiagnos faults within a CAN system but won't with out a scan tool. Still trying to figure out all the comments about not needing a scan tool and your a shitty tech if you do....
@gamestava
@gamestava 2 ай бұрын
@@FREERIDE270 I agree it is still really essential especially with todays cars. So many systems and without using a scan tool you make never uncover problems that are underlying. So any tech that says they never use one to diag are just bragging about a skill that really isn’t a skill. I use all the tools at my disposal.

That goes to show that people who maybe shouldn’t even attempt to tackle such a big job get encouraged to do so anyway by some KZbinrs who make something like this easier than it is or people in the forums saying “just do it yourself, there are many videos out there”. There is a reason why a shop with technicians that have 20+ years experience charge what they charge. So it’s not messed up the first time around and you don’t have to backpaddle.
