Since the METALLICA page liked this video, it’s safe to assume this was perhaps some inspiration for the cliff burton tribute during S&M 2 . The added distortion on that one was the missing piece.
@topsecret18375 жыл бұрын
No. Actually Metallica had nothing to do with the idea. The bassist who performed it did it all by himself, and Metallica and SF Orchestra approved of it. He had no clue who Rob Scallon was, and he tried doing it like this bowed but realized an acoustic bass wouldn’t do the job. There’s a massive gap between guitar players who play upright bass like Rob and Classical bassists like him who’s been doing this for 30 years.
@topsecret18375 жыл бұрын
Daniel J. This was posted recently and the bass player explains how he composed the piece himself. About 2 hours long if you’re not willing to take the time to hear this guy out. I’m in full awe of his performance, because a lot of work went into it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHXJfputjb9gbac

This is insanely good. I hope everyone realises just how difficult it is to play shit like this on an upright bass (or any instrument, for that matter.) Fretless instruments are literally rocket science compared to instruments with frets. Having tried to play the cello, I know how hard this must be. The bass has massive, massive strings and everything needs so much raw power, yet it needs to be subtle at the same time. As a classically trained violinist who has recently picked up the guitar and bass guitar, I applaud you. This is glorious, mr Scallon.

The strings dont look thicker than on a normal bass, in fact because of the scale lenght the strings are looser but the lack of frets, its not rocket science

I like to play it without distortion a lot as well. The chords come out really well, but when the distortion is on the chords kind of fuzz all over the place and you have to cut the notes off instead of letting them ring out for a chord. There's nothing better than the drums part with full distortion on stage though (I'm in a metallica tribute act, so I've played it live)

+Michael Justice I've played electric bass for probably 20+ years and have just now started on the double bass. It isn't easy... in fact I honestly think a lot of the habits I learned on the frets had to be unlearned first, but it sure is rewarding when you start to get it down. To sum up the old Carnegie Hall joke....."practice, practice, practice"
@bertrandlecerf25658 жыл бұрын
+Ben Eager Hey, this might be a dumb question, but why don't violins, cellos and double-basses just have frets on the side of the neck, like, where the player does'nt put his hand ? That way you'd be able to see the frets and know where you need to place your fingers, but since they're not on the neck in itself, it would'nt hinder the sound of the instrument, right ? I don't know the first thing about stringed instruments safe for bass and guitar, so again, sorry if this is a dumb question, but it's been bugging me for awhile now.
@beneager13868 жыл бұрын
I guess because you wouldn't be able to see them, so there wouldn't be much of a point. Young and beginning students do have small, thin pieces of tape put on the necks of their instruments to guide them, though. Also, most classical musicians are taught not to rely on vision to play, so they'll often play from memory with their eyes closed, or looking straight ahead.

He literally became a Metallica family member in the most awesome way possible! From what I heard from this podcast “Metal up your Podcast”, that is, Kirk and Rob even wanted to get back to doing the sessions Cliff would do with them to learn music theory and skills with him. So all I can say as a cellist myself is that he not only became THE moment of the whole concert, but he blew open the door for classical musicians to work with Metallica. And that is something good to hear from a metal band whose detractors believed they are running out of steam, especially with the band getting too much attention from the media for James going into and out of rehab. Feels bad for Australia and New Zealand...

okang okang Hey thanks! I'm working on a lot of stuff like that :) I really really enjoy writing and playing that type of music It's just that that type of stuff takes a long time to make. I can't do a new song like that every week, or even every month... and sometime I just don't end up writing that stuff for a while. It's not something I can force like I can with a cover, which I obviously don't need to compose. So songs like that are always going to be a big part of what I do, just not in high quantities.
