I just want to compliment the editor for this video especially on this part 11:15. Who ever did this clearly put a lot of effort into making both the music as well as the conversation as audible as possible. To have a full track playing this loud and clear while also having a conversation with half of it coming over phone is insane. Great job who ever did this.
@kevinvotaw2916 Жыл бұрын
not to disagree with you, but it's also just sonically a workable puzzle of frequency ranges. the conversation is essentially like vocals over a three piece band (and not to mention mostly clean guitar tones). and of course vocals fit well over metal instrumentation, or it wouldn't work as well as it does. not to invalidate your compliment because it was edited very well, just saying.

As an amateur bassist, I love this. While some people may not appreciate bass as much as they maybe should, I feel like it definitely has gotten a lot more opportunities to shine in metal than one might expect. There are a lot of songs out there that heavily rely on bass guitar for their most interesting aspects, I mean half of Mudvayne's entire catalogue is defined by Ryan Martinie and his amazing playing. You've also got players like Lemmy Kilmister, John Myung, Martin Mendez, Cliff Burton (RIP), Paolo Gregoletto and many others that are core to the sound of the bands they play in. A local band that I really enjoy actually has 2 bassists and one guitarist for a really interesting take on metal, one plays a 5 string the other plays a 12 string (4 sets of three strings). Love the appreciation that gets shown to the instrument when it's allowed to really shine. Obviously there's also people like Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Davie504 and Charles Berthoud that can make a bass absolutely sing xD

You couldn’t have said it any better, Rob. I'm an amateur audio engineer myself, and I'm also a drummer, and I have a MASSIVE appreciation for the bass in rock music. The bass and drums is what drives any genre, and I even went as far as to turn some bass tracks up when getting the multitracks to games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band (which I actually choose to play on Bass more than Guitar or Drums). Why? Because I want to actually hear what the bass part does. I don't really care if it overpowers the guitars a bit, because what's important to me is to actually get a better way to listen to the bass. This video sums up my exact thoughts on what I think the bass should be. Well said!

Bass is a tonal instrument, but it's also percussive, especially when played slapped. It's the glue that binds the rhythm to the melody. It bridges the gap between them and provides a space for them to come together in a seamless way. You might not always notice it, but you'd definitely notice it's absence. When your drummer and bassist find a pocket and snuggle down in there, they can make just about anything sound good. I love bass, I love playing bass, and I thank you for making this video. I played guitar from 7 yrs old until I was about 25. I learned how to play guitar alongside some great drummers, so my style was very percussive and I really learned to appreciate good timing. When I was about 25, I was given the opportunity to play bass because we couldn't find one that could play our particular type of music and we didnt have time to train anyone. Soon after is when I realized I was a better bassist than a guitarist. Plus, I was a good guitarist in a sea of excellent guitarists. On bass, I was a pretty good bassist in a sea of mediocre bassist. I had no problem finding spots in bands. Plus, I learned how to listen better and I understood frequencies and where each instrument fell in the mix. So I started recording duties in my bands. I am 51 now. as a guy whos spent his whole life explaining how to get these tones and sounds, it was great to see this video from the perspective of all those out there who really need to hear this, to everyone learning to mix and master and learning sound engineering... i suggest you listen to everything rob said in this video... all 110% true.

12:24 something terrifying about Jake on the side there, smiling with an otherworldly stillness, that just hit my fight or flight reflex.

Picking up bass to spite everyone else I knew taking up guitar, was the best decision I ever made. I have lived my life on the principle of bass playing. Support, guide, be a foundation for others to shine and just groove, man.

Immediately got tickets to Covet after seeing this video. Loved the show, and the whole band was awesome. Are your tapping styles similar by accident?

Good friend of mine, we have a band together and he had it hammered in his mind as a teenager that Beatles music was g*y and he should listen to real music like the Stones and real blues. For the past few years, we've been playing and recording together and whenever something caught his ear he would ask and I would reply "Totally stole that from Ringo" or "Production hack, they did it on Revolver"... As things kept going on he got hip to what was the deal with them and at the same time he was doing more of the bass playing on the recording sessions we were doing. That's when I turned him on to McCartney isolated tracks and he went nuts!! The way his basslines are so rythmic yet so melodic at the same time.... That's an ideal to strive for!! As a drummer, I love me a good bass player next to me!!

Oh! Didn't know Jessica is playing in Covet! I knew the previous band members left some time ago, but I didn't know who replaces them. That is awesome

Peter Hook is a great example of a bass player using the upper part of the fret board when he was with New Order.

ive been learning how to mix and master for about 3 years now, and i could never get the guitars to sound the way i wanted them to. it wasnt until i got good bass tone that the guitars FINALLY sat well in the mix. i underestimated the power of bass, and to a point, i still do. There is ALWAYS room to grow.

As a bassist, it's nice to hear things that I didn't even know. Really expanded the way I see riffs lol.

7:26 I don't feel like this specific part of the song is the best example for "one huge sound" because I actually hear separation because of the timbre BUT when the bass drops an octave during the breakdown, the separation suddenly disapears and it hit so much harder than when the bass was playing octave down from the start. So yeah, rhythm section carries the dynamics.

This video was uploaded at the perfect time, I've recently taken a step back and wondered what bass should actually be doing, especially in rock and metal and this video did a great job at explaining. literally the video I've been looking for

I make music on mostly my 7 string guitar around drop A/Ab, and ive always wondered if i should really have the bass part be a whole octave down from the 7 string and ive been apprehensive about that, but this vid taught me i could even just stay in the 7 string's octave range with a bass playing the notes in center channel! Gonna use that for sure.
