In the military in alpine training in Alaska we were taught to blow water from camelbak tube back into reservoir to keep from freezing 🥶 still do it today when I hunt. It works 👍🏻

The insulated tube covers work pretty well too, but I drink so much water that I rarely have a problem with it freezing in the tube. But yes, if you clear the tube, like clearing your SCUBA mask, it won't freeze in the tube. I really thought everyone did that, but I guess not.

Thanks man !! Nice job on the video , I use a MSR Hyper Flow system currently. I agree they are a pain , plugged filters and cleaning. I need to Try out the pen , looks easier and less bulky .

Great video, I started using the platypus gravity works last year and it's so much better than any Sawyer filter I've tried. The Steripen works great too. Those are my go to options. The only reason I can find to use my pump system is if the water is not reachable by a platypus bag or nalgene bottle.

I have a pro tip for camle packs blow air back threw the hose so no water is left in the hose, also put warm water in it in the morning, I use these water blatters snowmobiling in the winter in very cold temps and nobig issues if you remember to blow back the water.

I picked up Katadyn BeFree last year and ran it for my back pack hunts. Pretty happy with it, it’s very light and acts as it’s own water bottle. I fill it and then squeeze it out into other containers as needed. Wasn’t crazy expensive either, and super simple.

You are the first person I've seen who use the Steripen as their go to water purification, other than myself. I have a larger one for all outdoor activities, and a much smaller (they stopped production a decade ago on it) that is in my EDC. I'll even use it on water in any place that looks suspect. Easier to be safer than sorry.

no streams where i hunt but cattle reservoirs are around which......look like sh_t. Is the steri pen ok after filtering that cr_p...to make it drinkable

Should never drink non filtered water and a good system is vital for health and having an enjoyable hunt. I've tried several systems and found I use a gravity system in camp and carry a Ultra Violet PEN anytime I leave camp, even if i have plenty of water for a short hike. GREAT idea to keep the clean hoses sealed in a Zip-Loc Bag. just common sense.

I am currently using a geopress. Filter with a bandana to keep filter clean. Is it more sustainable to cross contamination than the others?

Hey David, no experience with them. Generally on bottle top filters, just be careful of getting contaminated water on the lid/filter/nozzle… you should be fine.

I carry dehydrated water, it's really light in my pack. Just my 2 cents, but Cliff has done a great job of explaining many of your choices and why and where they may be right for you. A bandana makes a great initial filter to get the crud out of the H2O. Coffee filters are great for filtering cloudy water. Cheap, plentiful, available everywhere, light, pack-able, biodegradable and they come in 10-20 micron versions. Use the 20 micron for really dirty water so they don't clog the filter too fast. You can always follow it up with a 10 micron filter if you're a bit obsessive. Then use a Steripen or bleach, or even a filter like an MSR or Sawyer mini. Coffee filters combined with a small bottle of regular Clorox (NO enhanced bleaches, pool tablets, etc) makes good, safe water, pretty quickly., it's a small, light package. 2 drops clorox per liter of water, drinkable in 30 min...or let it stand a bit longer for more chlorine to evaporate out. I quit using a CamelBak. though many love them,. They're a pain to clean, dry and store properly. If they develop mold or mildew, it's a real problem. The tubes freeze. plus you have use special cleaners and watching the time they're in the bladder or your bladder can deteriorate over time...nah...

On the Platypus gravity system...How many bags do you filter before you backflow it for cleaning?

It's very dependant on how much sentiment is in the water you are using. A broad average is every 3-4 bags. If it's horribly silty, it's not uncommon to do it on evey bag. Clean source, you might be able to go 10+ bags. Use the speed of filtration as a indicator. Once the filter has slowed down by 25-50% rom factory new, back flow it.

Coffee filters weigh nothing and will get most sediment out.
