Stalagmite has a “T” at the end. Since “Top” starts with “T,” Stalagmites grow from above. EDIT: Someone pointed out that I typed Stalagmite instead of what I clearly meant to type which was Stalactite. That was the whole point of highlighting the letter “T” in my comment. This movie has one of the best and most dangerous aerial stunts ever. It was done at around 15 000 ft while two planes were moving at 150 mph. It was done only once, because it was so dangerous and expensive, Simon Crane the guy who did the stunt, got one million dollars for it, and was ready to do it again, because it didn't go as planned at the end. When he reached the door, turbulence blasted him off to the roof of the plane and the crew couldn't pull him back inside, so he had to release himself and parachute down. So yeah, very cool.

The opening shot of the film where Stallone was climbing up the "tower"was for real. Stallone did most of his own climbing scenes. Including the opening. Incredible.
@anonymes28842 жыл бұрын
Literally "Incredible", in that it's not true :). Wolfgang Gullich doubled for Stallone on most of the climbing that wasn't faked on a soundstage (then was unfortunately killed in a car accident soon after). I'm sure old Sly did some of it but i'd be _very_ surprised if that wasn't Gullich in the opening scene, going across the roof etc. (if you have one of the best rock climbers in the world at the time on your payroll, you use him for, y'know, the rock climbing :). And I _guarantee_ Stallone didn't free solo up any towers (there's no way they'd get insurance for that). But if you have a credible source that shows otherwise, i'd be genuinely interested. (Dave Breashears - who's a bit of a mountain film legend himself - worked as a camera operator on the movie and talks in his 1999 memoir "High Exposure" about Gullich having to wear a prosthetic mask of Stallone's face when he doubled for him)

For years I always pictured John Lithgow as a villain in the movies. When I started watching "Third Rock from the Sun" it took me about 5 minutes to get over that and laugh my arse off at the way he brought the comedy to the small screen. He is a multi-faceted master. Broadway helped him hone his chops. There's a lot to the man. If you get a chance, read about his life. Very interesting.

Fun Facts: The large majority of the film's scenes were shot in the Dolomites in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. For example, the bridge scene was shot on Monte Cristallo in the via ferrata VF Ivano Dibona, which was reconstructed immediately after the movie. The climbing was mostly on the Tofane cliffs, and in some scenes toward the end of the movie the audience clearly sees the three Tofane, the Croda da Lago, and the town of Cortina; the location of this is on top of Mount Faloria, at the arrival of the funivia Faloria. In other scenes are the sentiero ferrato Astaldi, over the Rifugio Dibona. The small house has been constructed on the sand of the river Boite, in Fiames, close to the heliport. Some filming took place in Durango, Colorado. The credits of the film also thank the Ute Tribe for filming in the Ute Mountain reservation. Cliffhanger is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the costliest aerial stunt ever performed. Stuntman Simon Crane was paid $1 million to perform the aerial transfer scene, where he crossed between two planes at an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,600 m). The principal climbing doubles were Ron Kauk and Wolfgang Güllich. Kauk performed as Stallone's climbing double after Güllich died in a car accident in 1992. The doubles filled in for Stallone on most of the climbing scenes due to the actor's fear of heights; an injury to Stallone's hand, reported to have occurred on one of the cliffs, actually occurred on a soundstage.

Fun fact: I read years ago, that Stallone was an Olympics athletic coach of sone sort, in Switzerland, before he made it as an actor. So, he may or may not be an accomplished climber, but that is where he developed an affection towards Land Rovers, and he has used them in several of his films (he owns several, and back in the '90's, he imported three of them, that ended up getting siezed by U.S. Customs, because at the time, they weren't legal for import to the U.S....I used to know the Customs broker that was involved). That aside, this is one of the greatest action films ever made - but one of the most forgotten.

Great reaction and movie choice! That kind of movie venue isn't seen often, filming in mountains is difficult and risky, the 3 I'd reccomend are Everest (2015), Vertical Limit (2000) and The Eiger Sanction (1975), they all have mountaineering dominating the subject matter with great climb scenes, there may be others but few were made outside the documentary style, seeing those, I'm more convinced then ever to keep my feet firmly on LOW ground...

"Vertical Limit" has some of the worst climbing scenes in any movie (fair play, maybe they're thrilling to people who don't know anything about climbing). Worse even than this (and this is pretty bad). Which isn't to say they're not entertaining movies though (just like almost every movie featuring e.g. hacking, a film can be a lot of fun but do one thing badly). "The Eiger Sanction" on the other hand still, nearly 50 years on, has some of the _best_ climbing in a (fictional) movie. So your post really covers a range :). (i'd suggest the German film "Nordwand" BTW, another Eiger movie but this one fictionalised from real events in the 1930s)

Really? As a Brit it just sounds like an American doing a British accent. His accent in The Crown is good though
@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t2 жыл бұрын
@@ZenzeroCAM One of the big issues American actors have often had is that their 'British' accents take a tour of the island, sometimes in a single sentence. John Lithgow is at least consistent throughout this movie, which puts him a good bit above most of his contemporaries. Recently, though, a lot more actors are making better use of speech and accent coaches.
@joeygoodwin96292 жыл бұрын
@@ZenzeroCAM Honestly, yeah. It was moreso because when I visited Britain back in the mid 2000s, the son of the two people that took me there, which were Brits that moved to the U.S., that we stayed with had an almost identical accent to Lithgow's. I haven't seen The Crown yet, though I think I should with the praise I've heard.
@mapesdhs5972 жыл бұрын
@@ZenzeroCAM Kinda always that way with accents though. :) There is, for example, the generic "American" accent often used in TV movies, adverts, etc., which many non-Americans likely regard as being typical American, yet to Americans it probably sounds ridiculous because it doesn't sound like any part of the US which really exists. Likewise, few Brits have that very neutral 'polite' accent used in movies (which has become associated with intelligece and therefore smart & evil/cunning bad guys), real Brits have a range of accents which is mind boggling, as any tour from Cornwall through the lower counties, up to Norfolk, across towards Wales, north to Merseyside, Lancashire, Yorkshire, stopping off at Newcastle somehow, etc., will show. :D That's why I love "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" so much, likewise, "Hot Fuzz". Yarp. :D And I'm in Scotland, where accents can be just as whackadoodle. At uni in Edinburgh in 1989, in a kitchen fillled with people from a dozen nations and four continents, everyone could speak English but the one person for whom I had to translate was the wonderful Jackie from Glasgow. :)
@anonymes28842 жыл бұрын
It's very far from the worst example of someone putting on an English accent i'd say but I doubt it'd convince many in the UK (years ago i'd have said "any" but i've since come across some of my compatriots with a truly _terrible_ ear for accents, even our own :). Still, you're almost certainly not from the UK yourself and it's decent enough that to the non-native ear I could well believe it's pretty convincing.
