Regarding the tape. I would try using self amalgamating tape, which eventually becomes a solid piece of rubber, which i think will be more effective at keeping water out. Used a lot by radio hams to protect their antennas electrical connections.

Another job done Cliff. I use a Hobbygas bottle. No rental fees and reasonable value for an exchange. Best wishes, Dean.

Hi Cliff, good to see the shed being used again. Give yourself a fighting chance with TIG welding and get some TIG gloves, get more feel for what your doing, failing that, try rigger gloves

If you are blowing holes turn the current right down until it only just makes a puddle, then bring it up slightly until the edge of the puddle (not the arc) is just hit enough to melt the filler rod, it is a tricky process at first untill you can see the puddle clearly and just add metal at the outer edge, not into the arc. It is also highly possible that it is a pisspoot lump of chenese metal!

Got the job done. As a rule of thumb you need 1 amp per thou of material thickness. I suspect that perhaps that was only 1/2 mm ( 20 thou ) tube. El Crappo Chinese.

TIG welding is a bit like a lathe, once you have bought the machine you can spend the same again in accessories. Those Toolstation/Screwfix mini bottles don't last 2 minutes, good enough to test the machine but not much more and it seems wasteful that they aren't reusable. Good choice to find something a bit better sized, I use Hobbyweld, no rental on the cylinder and it's about £50 for a 10litre pure argon refill to 130bar.

I’m very good at low temperature crow shit welding with my mig welder, I would rather use oxyacetylene it was all we used years ago, but unfortunately it’s out of fashion, mind you so am I
