So good to see the Emco making chips again Cliff 👍👍👍 Cheers, Alan.

Always good watching you Cliff. I hope your wood lathe issue isn’t too serious, although I’m sure you know that 3-phase motors don’t have capacitors..! Might be an Earth fault though? Hopefully not a winding gone down… - a little investigation and you’ll have it sorted. All the best.

Always a nice moment making chips again. I've got a Jubilee Wood lathe as well, but a single phase motor so less to go wrong! Nice job Cliff.

Hi Cliff, you fix one machine and another goes on the blink, like you said might be the capacitor or the motor might need a rewind, hope its some thing simple, take care

Normally you adjust the height of the cabinet feet, not between the lathe and the cabinet. Secondly, the chuck either adds to or subtracts from the accuracy of the spindle, particularly if it’s a used chuck that wasn’t very expensive to begin with. If you have accurate collets, that’s the best. The bar can have a smaller diameter. To test the tailstock properly, it’s done using two centers. Getting the inaccuracies if the chuck out of the equation is the most reliable way to do this.

He mentions that he already levelled the cabinet with the base feet, and he was talking about levelling the twist out of the bed using the bed casting bolts which isn't possible on the Maximat lathe as there's only two bolts, normally there would be 4 bolts for adjusting out the bed twist and levelling it perfectly with a machine level. As for the chuck, it doesn't matter. Turning a cylindrical part removes any chuck runout error so Cliff's test was perfectly accurate for what he needed. After that first test is done without tailstock support and the headstock is aligned true, it is standard (reccomended in many lathe manuals) practice to then use the tailstock, test cut, and adjust tailstock. So Cliff did every right.

@@TinkerInTheShop you get the twist out of a bed by adjusting the feet on the cabinet. Obviously, with two mounting bolts from the lathe to the cabinet top, that’s also the method EMCO expects it to be done since you can’t do it with two bolts. I’ve never used shims in any lathe to eliminate twist. The concept is ridiculous.
