They act like this is the first time glaciers are melting or moving Northward in that area. The Earth is 4.5 billion years old, it happened many times before. This is just one of many cycles.

Unchecked tourism to Pakistan's northern areas is damaging the eco system of the area. Just like Netherlands, Pakistan should also control tourism with minimal environmental damage. Water reservoirs should be built to control wastage of precious natural resource. Tree preservation and plantation to be strictly ensured in northern areas
@ToudaHell

Climate change is the main culprit. You can try to blame it on anything else but that's just scapegoating. The climbing temperatures are accelerating melting the glaciers that feed into the biggest rivers in Asia. (Aka. The amount of melting exceeds ice accumulation every year) Even if Pakistan stop tourism right now, it wouldn't do any good. That cracking is the sound of all environmental scientists hearts breaking because these floods has been predicted for decades as part of our worst case scenarios.

"The glacier was far away but has moved closer." 1:33 Doesn't that mean the glacier is getting bigger? Anyway the main drivers of glacial advance or retreat is not changing global temperature but changes in precipitation patterns.
@gaminghighlights2481
@gaminghighlights2481 Жыл бұрын
No, it’s not getting bigger. In the summer when temperatures are higher, some of the glacier melts and moves forwards. Then later in winter it freezes, it stays in one place. This is a slow process and takes many years for the glacier to move. However due to higher temperatures, much of the glacier melts in the summer, speeding up the process. Not only that higher temperatures also result in higher rainfall as more of the glacier melts, evaporates, condenses and rains.

@gaminghighlights2481 The retreat of Himalayan glaciers began before the current warming and was caused by reduced precipitation (Shekhar, 2017. Singh, 2020.). This supported by further work done by Schneider (2014), and Chen (2019). The retreat was due to a reduction in precipitation. Currently, precipitation is half of what it was 20 years previously. Research by Salerno (2015) "challenges the assumption of the main driver [i.e. temperature] of glacier mass changes". Satellite data shows the glaciers in the Karakoram largely unaffected by current warming. Of 1219 glaciers surveyed, 79.5% were stable, 5.3% were advancing, and 7.6% retreating (Rankl, 2014). Swiss Alps glacier extents were smaller than 2000 C.E. during the warmer-than-today Roman and Medieval Warm Periods and throughout 75% of the Holocene, or when temperatures were 1-3°C warmer (Schimmelpfennig et al., 2022). Glaciologists Bohleber et al, 2020 of the Austrian Academy of Science discovered from ice cores that the 3500-meter high Weißseespitze summit was ice free 5900 years ago. There is “no evidence” that Jostedalsbreen, a southern Norway glacier, even existed during the first several thousand years of the Holocene, or when CO2 hovered near 260 ppm (Winker, 2021). There is no objective observational evidence that we are living in a global climate crisis. Glacial retreat is certainly not evidence of this.

It's too late to stop global warming and it's here to stay, every government that has suffered major flooding needs to start implementing drainage systems as the ones installed in New Orleans after Katrina, and underground water reservoirs will also be needed in drought prone areas.
@gregleavitt1255
@gregleavitt1255 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the side-effects are much more complex than merely flooding, as you're seeing around the world right now. The problem is much bigger than Red & Blue, Communist vs Capitalist, Us vs Them, or any other human spawned dramas. It's larger than our world economies combined. Any artificial bandaids we can apply to the wound (cloud seeding or reflective shields or so on) will be short-sighted and prone to failure as with all human endeavors. It's food and water supply, sea levels, catastrophic storms, extremes in all forms of weather on land and sea globally. We already see weather refugees now who are getting out of Dodge while they can (mainly the rich who can sell and get some money for their properties and uproot to cheaper, safer areas) and this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Whether we caused it or are magnifying it may be too complicated to calculate and debate conclusively, if only in hindsight. But it certainly is changing, as you said. And major changes to the planet coincide with major extinction events. It may become the first time that all of humanity has had to communicate and work together on something, to go to war with a force greater than ourselves.

These floods were predicted in 2009 in a climate change podcast. The subsequent drought that'll happen when the glaciers melt completely is also predicted. This is why I gave up on environmentalism. It's too late to do anything so there's no point. P.s. I have a post grad in environmemtal sciences.

FALSE! "The myth states that Montana’s cold, snowy winters and “extreme amounts of snowfall” have not only halted the decades-long trend of glacier retreat, but in fact, have caused glaciers to expand. If true, that would be welcome news. Alas, it isn’t. The U.S. Geological Survey spells it out in plain language: “Despite occasional big winters or frigid weeks that occur, the glaciers of GNP, like most glaciers worldwide, are melting as long-term average temperatures increase.”
@303Scott
@303Scott Жыл бұрын
@@drkstrong Is that why they took the signs down about the shrinking glaciers? LOL. Also, long-term temps aren't increasing according to satellite data. Only ground data is showing warming from the urban heat-island effect. You are suffering from a media-induced mass delusion.
