The scenery was out of this world and it made all the climbing so much easier. It's funny, because I wasn't bothered about the time too much but then it irked me somewhat when I was texted my finishing time by the organisers at the end.It was so slow because of the mechanical that I kind of wanted to text back and explain, 'i'm not really that slow!.'

Same. In the sense that I came here from YT's suggested vids following Dan & Matt's GCN vid of this sportive and not in the sense that I'm also from Oz. I'm from the UK. If I had a big enough bucket this would go in it, but I'll settle for getting back into UK sportives as it's been too long without one. New fan of your work, Juliet, I've followed you on Twitter to keep an eye on your future two-wheeled adventures...ciao bella x :)

Great kit and shoes, gals! Very cool. In the mountains I carry the fingers I cut from a snug pair of latex gloves. They grip well, cut the wind when descending in the ice, and weigh nothing. Negative fashion points though, so don't forget to remove them before you get a brew or your mates will have a field day!
@JulietElliottsChannel7 жыл бұрын
thanks! you carry just the fingers? Isn't it a bit awkward putting on individual fingers? Surely a pair of gloves would be easier?
@rogerhonacki56107 жыл бұрын
Juliet Elliott A little awkward, but it's for those rare times your fingers freeze at the top and it's really light... the whole glove is too hot/sweaty inside a cycling glove for me, but you could try it. Might be good for roadside first-aid that way... if you use the just fingers, be sure they fit snugly. Have fun!

I would have 2 of your issues for sure: what to wear with the changing weather (and weather prediction!); and getting up at 4h30 blaaaaaaaa. In all these events, actually finding a place to sleep is a challenge but you obviously had this one figured out. For some reason I had never thought of being there days in advance and doing some of the course prior. Thanks for the vid
@JulietElliottsChannel7 жыл бұрын
Those two things were the biggest worry for me too, not doing the climbing or finishing the ride!! I really hate getting up early, mainly because I struggle to sleep so I need as much time as possible to try. Thank you

Great video - thanks for sharing. I did an unsupported cycle trip in N Italy/ Austria a couple of years ago. Loved the ride I did in the Dolomites similar to yours (the most beautiful ride), and also the Grossglockner (most spectacular ride), monte Zoncolan (hardest climb) and Stelvio (longest climb). Check those out if you go back! Only a personal thing but I much prefer riding without 1000s of other cyclists swarming all over the place. When I did the Zoncolan I saw one other cyclist (and one car) and it was very 'spiritual'.

Nice vid. Looks amazing! Would love to do that one day. Ha! The concept of a sportive in NZ is a totally foreign one. Stop in a race (yes I know its not officially a race, but my NZ brain just can't except it)? Just wouldn't happen unless you're unfit, hadn't trained and really needed to. Like cramping at the side of the road, or had run out of food and water and were bonking. Go hard or go home is the general motto. But then we don't have really epic rides like that one, so maybe that's another reason?
@JulietElliottsChannel7 жыл бұрын
really? I'm amazed they don't have any there. Sportives are totally not races and food stops are the norm, plus they're ridden by a really diverse bunch of people, plenty of whom really do need to stop and refuel. The fast guys/girls normally just take their own food with them but for many people, the aim is simply to complete the ride
@swites7 жыл бұрын
I suppose its more of a European idea most here haven't been exposed to. Except for committed cycling fans no one would know what a sportive was here! Generally 75%+ will be riding for times and places. Older social riders and newbies will be riding just to complete of course, but won't stop any longer generally, than they have to. For participation events/ races we had our largest numbers probably around 2008? Rides that used to have 2000, now get about 6 to 800 (smaller population so smaller numbers). But I think because everyone has such a competitive attitude here, a lot of people just smashed themselves "racing" a few times and got put off. Leaving the committed hardcore to it. If they could have just ridden it with no pressure to record best times etc with water/ food stops along the way, they probably could have enjoyed it a lot more. And kept coming back. So I think the idea is a good one and should be promoted here a lot more :)

hope you get there. Thanks! You know what though, riding in the UK is equally difficult because the climbs can be so relentless and often aren't followed by a descent long descent for you to recover. The Maratona climbs are long but apart from Passo Giau, the gradient makes them feel ok - they're steady
