@@UCDupleix depends on the peripheral damage. I tore my ACL and had no pain whatsoever because nothing else was damaged. Couldn't walk for shit for a day or two but could even walk and jog fine by mid-week. Had to get surgery of course because my knee wouldn't stay stable during full extension. So he was probably lucky (I say lucky but... That's relatively speaking) that the damage was localized.

For anyone wondering, Pete was kind enough to answer my email, the LCL tear does not require surgery, just rehab and things are going good. He started climbing 1 footed (funnily enough) and progressed to 2 foot. So things are going good, hope to see him crush again soon.

Surgery is usually not necessary for these kind of tears, but his knee will never be as stable as before without it. But you will generally not notice this in normal activities.
@titter3648

It is probably only a grade 1 tear then. A grade 3 would have required surgery, and he would have been in a lot of pain and not been able to walk like he did.

On New Years Day I had a bad fall while climbing and fractured my left foot. It hurt, but not in a "something is wrong" way right away so kept climbing for a bit. It wasn't until I turned the foot a certain way that it became clear something really was wrong. It is surprising the delay between an acute injury, and when the pain becomes clear that you have a significant injury. I think doubly so when your sport is based in part on pain tolerance.

Easily done, especially if you have never experienced it before. I tore my ACL playing football from a bad tackle by someone else then I carried on playing for 10 minutes before my tibia popped out the joint whilst running. The 2nd time I obviously stopped but initially I had no idea the damage had been done so I just figured it was superficial.

Actually it makes total sense if you were to hold a 3d model and tried that. It's hard to explain but when you bend the knee it gives you the whole length of the tibia to create torque onto the side of the knee with the ligament already on it's highest tension area. So basically youre putting a slightly elastic (5%)rope on max length and then apply brute force onto it.

Little tip for not using chalk that we use in the Czech republic🇨🇿: You can blow into your palms and on your fingers before or during the route. It's also helpful to wipe your hands into a rug/shirt during climbing. When you get used to not using chalk its not that big deal. In Jizerske hory you usually have way too much friction, because the rock is actually tearing your hands and everything that is in contact with the rock. I'd actually love to see how would Magnus deal with this kind of rock. Greetings from Czech republic!🇨🇿

I knew exactly what happened when I heard that cracking sound. I tore my LCL on a heel hook about a year ago. The recovery wasn't so bad as far as climbing injuries go. I did no climbing for the first 2 months, then another few months of easy climbing with a good knee brace ( falling on the knee felt like the riskiest part of climbing for a while). It felt basically 100% healed after 6 months, but I still avoid cranking hard on heel hooks.

I love ur vids magnus. I’m almost 22 and getting into bouldering a bit more because of u. It’s very fun and I’m excited to see how far this new hobby of mine goes. Hopefully it becomes a lifestyle.

good trick that i try to use all the time, before chalk and climbing, i wash my hands with a lot of soap to remove all the grease in my hands, and when my hands start to get slippery i do the same, sometimes you pickup some grease from objects you touch or dirty holds. this is a fun think i'll try when ever they open the climbing gym again!

Ive torn the ligaments in my knee before and it was just as Pete described, unstable. You just feel every now and then like your knee is just going to fall apart or collapse in one direction. Difference between me and Pete is that I screamed at the top of my lungs when I tore mine and he just tried to keep climbing!!

To answer your question about route climbing without chalk: I’m a routesetter and our gym is only allowing liquid chalk. I’ve gotten used to climbing easy grades without it because it takes too long to apply and dry. On harder grades it’s made me a more efficient climber because I can’t obsessively rechalk. Just gotta keep moving. I noticed a difference when I went sport climbing outside again and could use regular chalk.
