It appears to me that the obstacle is made to flip towards the constant and not rotate "forward". When the USA guy did it, all his momentum was moving "forward", allowing him to climb it and stabilize.

The score after round 3 was 16 to 8, but the team with 8 wins the whole thing just for winning the last round, making the entire competition pointless, just climb the rope from the beginning if that's the only thing that counts.
