I've been wanting to do neuropsychology for a few years and I was just accepted into grad school! I haven't been able to find many neuropsychologists on youtube so it's cool to finally find another person studying in the field that I'll be studying.

hey! this really gave me insight into the field of neuropsychology. I was wondering at what point in your life we’re you certain that this was *the* career path for you? Why not other fields? I’m currently a high school student with an interest in psychology and neurology. After being told by my friend that those are very different fields, I started to look into it and BAM, I found neuropsychology! (in your face, friend who told me otherwise) From my understanding, a neuropsychologist would have an understanding of the connections between human behavior and the brain structure in which contributes to such behaviors. This sounds right up my alley but what exactly do neuropsychologist do? And what made you so sure about your career decision? Amazing video by the way! Loved your other video about a day in the life of a neuropsychology student! your videos inspire me :)) keep up the good work!
@mrsbrains22724 жыл бұрын
highkeycrying thank you for your lovely comment! I talk about how I ended up studying neuropsychology in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mISupKigaJyij6M . And this other too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ-0k5mAptejo6M I completely get where you’re coming from, it’s really complicated for a teenager to decide what they want to do for a career. I’d advise you to trust your instincts and do something in relation to your interests. You can always give it a go and if you see it’s not for you, change to another field. You got it! Being a neuropsychologist means having a really good understanding about brain structure, so you’re able to know what happens when certain areas are damaged. The first way of seeing this is through behavior, and luckily because of technology, it can also be through imaging. The job itself of a clinical neuropsychologist consists on seeing patients that come to you with subjective complaints and people that do already have a clinical background. You’re not a psychologist that treats with therapy, you help with the diagnosis, it’s closer to a neurologist, though they are the experts on the brain, giving the final diagnosis. What you do, is further research with patients by doing more screenings and giving facts to the posible suspected diagnosis. This of course requires a deep knowledge about the brain, and once you’ve been working in the field for a while, your start seeing patterns and it’s easier to know which screening tests you should use according to what the patient says and what you see through their behavior. You’ve to be really resourceful. In terms of being sure this was THE career I wanted, sadly there’s not a magic way of being 100% sure, you just have to try things and see what interests you the most, and the least. For me it has a good balance between “medicine” and “science”, plus I love talking to people and I do a lot of that with the patients haha. I hope I answered your questions and good luck! 😉

Neuropsychology is the career goal. I am starting university soon and I have some questions about the education. Is it a bachelors in psychology and then a PhD in Neuroscience? Every school I look into they have a neuroscience doctorate program. I see nothing on neuropsychology, is there a difference ?
@mrsbrains22724 жыл бұрын
Yes! There’s a difference, it’s a different field. Neuroscience is more focused on research I’d say and neuropsychology can be either research or clinical. At some point there are both pretty intertwined but there aren’t exactly the same field. You could try looking up higher education with clinical neuropsychology and see what comes up, or ask any advisor in case you’ve access to that in university/high school. Good luck!!

Can you be a clinical neuropsychologist without a doctorate? Can I just get my masters? Or maybe a psyD
@mrsbrains22724 жыл бұрын
becs thank you for your lovely comment! I believe you can become a clinical neuropsychologist with a PsyD, but I advice you to check it online or ask some type or advisor if you’re able to reach one!
