When I graduated I had no idea what salary to advocate for and felt too nervous to ask my colleages how much money they make. Today I outline exactly how much money I made in my first 3 years as a clinical psychologist and I hope this video gives you an insight into what you can be expecting both in public health and private practice settings in Australia. Would love to hear your thoughts or questions!

Regarding Lisa Crooke's comment on school psych salaries: yes, they have gone up, and they've gone up significantly. In your first year as a school psych with the department of education, you're looking at $95,317. I'll attach the link to the award at the end of this comment. The good thing about this role is that you get school holidays. Although it is a full-time job (4 weeks leave p.a.), you can't see clients if they aren't at school to be seen. If you can get your report writing and assessment scoring done during semester, then long holidays for you! The not so good (or so I'm told by people working in the system) is that you don't just pick a school and work there. you might work at several schools in an area. Basically, you go where you are required by the department. I'll also point out that working as a school psych is not like working in private practice. You don't just get clients and then develop a long-term relationship with them and do CBT or ACT etc. It's mostly about 1) doing assessments for ADHD, ASD, or intelligence, and 2) conducting brief interventions (3 sessions tops). These interventions are mostly done to rule in/out self-harm/suicidality and make a safety plan if necessary. So, while assessment and interventions are done frequently in schools, students are usually referred externally i.e. to private practice for treatment. if you're prepared to do mostly short-term interventions and don't mind being shipped around, it's quite lucrative. the fifth-year salary is $140,000. For context, I'm currently on my fifth-year placement (for the 5 + 1) in a private school, so I'm not involved with the department. I'm just reporting on what has been said to me in conversation by those who have experience in the public system. education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/main-education/industrial-relations/media/documents/awards/school-psychologists-award/School_Psychologists_Award_220124.pdf.

Thanks for sharing! It was great to hear a realistic perspective on income. I'd imagine it's similar to other allied health professions too in private practice. It's awesome though that you have the flexibility to work when and how much you want though, am also a casual worker in my field in Australia (thinking of transitioning to allied health in the future as well!) and am loving the flexibility too of working either 1 or 5 days a week. For me I realised as well as a young person more money doesn't equate happiness and that at the end of the day it's important to be grateful for what you have and to take care of yourself so that you don't burn-out, as you are only one you. Thanks for sharing Ro! :)

That table is so crazy because I feel like most gen psychs are on far higher salaries. I’m a prov (close to full reg) and I’m on close to $100k. The first psych job I had was less than 30k (casual), so it really fluctuates 😚 I currently work in private practice doing assessment.

Usually those tables show an award salary which is the absolute MINIMUM each level can get paid legally (this exists for every industry I believe). So yes, it’s very possible the actual average is much higher, especially because psychologists are very much in demand and negotiations with an employer are definitely possible.

My best friend is working as an early childhood educator and she's been working full time for about 2-3 years now, and now she is a manager. Her salary is higher than Psychologist who has 4th year of experience. She only did 4 year degree, while psych is doing 6-7 years and earn less than that. My colleagues who are working as speech pathologist also earns almost as much or even higher than Psych. Very disappointing.

You mentioned that you split your time between your role educating teachers etc with private practice working as a psychologist, and I’m also very aware that most clinicians don’t work full time. How do you recommend obtaining essentially two different jobs while you’re still finishing masters? Is that not so stressful? Also curious what the title of your role is (the one where you’re educating staff etc)! I’m new to your channel so not sure if you’ve discussed it in depth in another video :)

@thepsychdiaries
@thepsychdiaries 3 ай бұрын
It depends based on clinic, some have very strict rules. Most of time when we waive the cancellation it's because the client has something personal going on- last minute parents having to attend to children or they're sick or so overwhelmed they're losing track of appointments. But if it becomes a pattern we do end up charging.
