Regarding compensatory cell proliferation it is occuring because the radiosensitive cells have been killed hence the nearby cells are triggered to cover up the loss by proliferating. So these apoptotic cells secrete mitogens that initiate this action and maintain tissue homeostasis. What I should have clarified is that cell killing results in compensatory cell proliferation that is observed in both normal tissues and tumours alike. Compensatory cell proliferation being mainly a secondary effect of cell killing. And usually makes up about 60℅ of the loss. 2. The Experiment 1 used Chinese Hamster fibroblasts.
