how about pointing out, just once, the leading cause of bankruptcy in USA? no? fine, it's healthcare costs. in my country, you can just go to the hospital when you kid gets sick, when you break a leg, when you give birth, WITHOUT worrying about losing everything you own, ever.

+meurtri Mentioning that would have felt to me like choosing to discuss facts that supported one plan or the other. It is sooooo hard in these videos not to grab onto the thing that you think is right and talk about why it's the best plan. But when I do that, it becomes opinion and not fact. Of course, there is no way to eliminate all bias, and I'm sure I did not in this video, but I think it is important to try.
@stormelemental138 жыл бұрын
+vlogbrothers And I appreciate you doing that. You tried, and I feel basically succeeded completely, in giving a quick summary of the factual differences between the two policies. Not which one was better, not all ramifications of them, not why Sanders wants a single-payer system, just what are the differences in the two tax policies put forward. Thank you. I appreciate this.
@vlogbrothers8 жыл бұрын
+Heather McGuire There's bias in choosing which facts you discuss. This video had a very narrow goal...you need that to avoid bias. I could talk about how the leading cause of bankruptcy is medical bills. Or I could talk about how a single payer healthcare system would result in the 444,000 people working for private insurance companies losing their jobs. Both are facts...which one should I put in the video? It's very difficult to open up the can of worms the pros and cons of single payer healthcare and not be talking about it for at least 10 minutes.

@leonorprata60828 жыл бұрын
+vlogbrothers perhaps both? it's called an argument and counter argument. As long as you cite figures and not just opinions, that's fine. Also, it would be a fact that 170 economists have supported Bernie Sanders' programme. It's not biased to cite facts, the real bias is stating everything is neutral when in reality, consequences are not. Anyways, I'm a subbed fan of your channels, so keep at it :D

Your simplistic review sounds exactly like what you probably heard on Faux News. And you didn't hear what he said in this video pretty much at all. Now, I'm not necessarily for our against Bernie's plan, but I seem to understand the fact that to GET more you have to PAY more. And you don't have to lay that much more for what you're going to get unless you make more than $250k/yr. Based purely on statistics I would bet that you dont. If you do, however, consider it an investment in your children's education and healthcare. I'm willing to take a bit more out of my check to not have to pay for insurance premiums when I need to use my insurance that I've been paying for four a long time. The whole "Wait times will skyrocket! You'll have to wait a year to see a doctor about your flu!" Is a myth, plain and simple, perpetuated by people who A) Stand to lose money (insurance agencies and the politicians and lobbyists that they pay to keep the status quo) B) People who watch sensational programs on somewhat irrepetible, sensastionalistic networks who spew the same rhetoric that they have been fed because it is what they chose to eat. Just because you believe something is true doesn't make it true.

Thoughts from the Comments: 1. Why didn't you cite X or Y statistic that would supports single payer healthcare? Because talking about that would have felt to me like choosing to discuss facts that supported one plan or the other. It is sooooo hard in these videos not to grab onto the thing that you think is right and talk about why it's the best plan. But when I do that, it becomes opinion and not fact. Of course, there is no way to eliminate all bias, and I'm sure I did not in this video, but I think it is important to try. 2. Why did you lump employee and employer contributions to payroll tax together? Because they are both taxes on your income. Obviously, as an employer, I am biased here, and Bernie's plan would eliminate some of our healthcare costs which would probably mean salaries wouldn't change a ton. But tons of economic studies have previously shown that new employer payroll taxes are eventually transferred to employees as lower wages.

"I'm not going to get in to Corporate Taxes because... mylurrgggghhh!" Which, at the simplest level, is exactly why the whole carousel/shell company tax avoidance industry works. It is so synthetic, boring and complicated (and that infinite levels of additional complexity can be added as desired) is that investigating it is beyond the skill or will of most regulators. So they settle for massive fines, and the institution of course pays, under the proviso that it is agreed that they did nothing wrong, have not been prosecuted for any malfeasance, and have a clean record to... begin the whole cycle again.

+insomniacfolder Yes. It is designed to be complicated and it is a huge competitive advantage for large companies that can afford the lawyers that make it all possible. My businesses, on the other hand, pay their fat 40% corporate tax every year while Apple and GE pay like 2%.

You mentioned that Bernie's plan could make it more difficult for small businesses to get off the ground, but seemed to struggle to make a counter-point. +ingenparks I believe John has said before that he is not a registered democrat, though I think it would be very fair to say that his political views generally lean democrat/liberal, especially socially. @FruityVeggieHead8 жыл бұрын
I mean, John makes a significant amount of money. He's a best-selling author, so he's probably in the higher tax brackets most years. Since he makes more money than Hank (I'm assuming) it makes sense that he would analyze the tax plans of the candidates who are more financially conservative.

It was a 'firewall', if you will, that separated big banks from depositors money; which was the main culprit for the 1929 crash; interestingly enough, there hadn't been a major crash up until it was de-regulated, thus attributing to the Great Recession of 2008.

Ahhh714 totally agree. I think people just got so complacent that they started thinking the legislation wasnt needed, which it was.

Well gut reaction, rich should pay their fair share, Sanders is a better system. But that's just my feeling as a poor person. Also if you want to lower medical costs then you need government oversight and regulations to prevent US Pharmaceutical companies, Doctor's and Hospitals from charging 300%-2000% more for the same procedure or product than it would cost in England or Australia.

This is the exact reason why a single payer healthcare system is not the answer in the US, at least not now. Pharmaceutical companies and hospitals would just take advantage of the system to continue overcharging for their services. It's time for regulation.

+Linton S. Dawson www.nyu.edu/projects/ollman/docs/what_poly_sci.php In any case, I would agree that a scientist would have a nick at explaining things due to the nature of their work. It would make sense that they are able to explain politics more properly provided that they have assistance from someone in more political fields. I have to say, I almost mistook you for one of those people who think scientists should replace politicians simply because they are "smart". I'm glad that we managed to come to an agreement in the end.
@ihazthots8 жыл бұрын
Muhd Shaf, no. That is not what I am implying. Politician is a job requiring specific expertise and experience as is the case with academia. One could excel at both, as is the case with some of our legislative leaders, but more often than not, it's either one.

I love you Hank, but I have some constructive criticism for you. Instead of apologizing to everyone for the supposed bore of the subject material; you can just discuss it as the most pertinent topic to our civil engagement. A subject for some that is a rather enjoyable subject; if only for that niche viewer. An niche audience that might often be asked to sit through much more superficial discussions appealing to everyone else's more base understanding, with a smile. Just please don't apologize, this is a great video and it didn't need you apologizing for it. Thank you for taking the time to portray an accurate picture of the tax plan.

***** Your article equivocates. Consider the actual quote: "Sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is when people are lining up for food. That's a good thing. In other countries, people don't line up for food. The rich get the food and the poor starve to death." Now consider the context: www.wfp.org/hunger/stats Most notably, *3.1 million children die every year from malnutrition.* Sanders has a habit of saying things that are a bit too simplified when he has the intent of pointing out something nuanced. The quote doesn't mean Sanders is in favour of central planning above all else; only central planning above people starving to death.

I'm not an American so I'm not qualified to make a decision about US politics. But I can't hold myself back and must say that I really like Bernie, but I recently got some doubts. He's still the best candidate you got, but what I don't understand is why do you need more taxes if most of your budget goes towards the Military? Why don't you cut Military spendings and invest that money wisely?
@brandchan8 жыл бұрын
+ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Cutting military spending is highly unlikely to make it past Republicans.
@MultiHalloweenParty8 жыл бұрын
+ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Looking at it from a long term perspective, we would want a stable source of money for the healthcare plan. Bernie wants to cut the military budget for sure, but he can't rely on it to fund his healthcare plan because, supposing it works out, we need a stable and direct source to get the funding for it. Suppose part of the military budget is redirected towards healthcare, there is no guarantee that it would continue like that in the future. So it is better to use taxes as a major source of funding. About raising taxes, I think it needs to be done, and while everyone's taxes are raised, this money is going towards programmes that helps the community. In addition, he is significantly raising the taxes for people making over $250,000 a year, which is long overdue. A lot of these people are paying less taxes than they should on paper, because they can make use of corporate taxes and business tax exemptions.
@JMICHAEL908 жыл бұрын
+ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ you know why pretty much all of Europe, Japan and Korea don't have to spend a boatload on the military? It's because the US IS their military. It's the backbone of NATO and the only thing stopping Russia and China from taking whatever they want. I wish we lived in a world that didn't need it...but that's not the case
@moover1238 жыл бұрын
+A DVmike (Mike) I'm not saying Military is not needed at all. You're probably right that other countries underfund their Military compared to the US. But still, there's a lot of overfunding into the US army. Anyway, I was more interested in the reason why Bernie doesn't promote this more. The argument that it won't make it past Republicans seems reasonable.
@MultiHalloweenParty8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wasn't talking about cutting it completely, just reducing it. I think the reason he doesn't talk about this more is that it's not just the republicans who would disagree with it; it's the democrats too. A majority of politicians on both sides are in favor of a large military budget because of the lobbying of the military industrial complex. The companies that produce weapons, planes, etc get massive amounts of money from wars, and they exert a lot of influence on politicians.

Excellent job with a Sisyphean task. I wish I could express this without inviting a slew of irate reaction (probably impossible) but without saying whether I personally think one route or the other is "better" or more moral, I will say that this necessarily simplified explanation makes it clear why, IF I WAS in charge of the eventual Republican candidate's platform, I would cut off my left arm to have the chance to run against Bernie rather than Hillary. Because despite many complaints that this summary isn't sufficiently detailed or doesn't explore the nuances of Bernie's plan, it is far more detailed and nuanced than the vast majority of swing voters in the key swing states is likely to want to pay attention to; and when it comes to deciding the election, those are the voters that matter.
