I'm a Music Teacher. AS SOON AS he said he tapped all the time, I knew!!! Drummers NEED to tap!!! Certain traits and abilities are simply born into us. It is up to the adults around us to recognize those traits and abilities in us because children don't have the understanding and experience to do it for themselves. I wish identifying musical traits in children was part of all educators' training. I think there would be fewer "behavior problems" if it were.

Definitely a tear jerker! Undiagnosed ADHD well into adulthood is awful.. feel guilty and wrong and a nuisance all the time. But once you realize what it is, and that you can use your condition constructively, in a way that serves YOU, the world is your oyster if you want to be. 😊

As a psychologist of 28 years, may I offer the following. Maybe it's not undiagnosed ADHD. Maybe it's just another way of being in the world that works well in some places and not so well in other places. ADHD is a diagnosis that explains distractibility and hyperfixation and many other phenomena, which are conveniently encompassed by the growing number of subtypes. Pathologising normality and difference is increasingly problematic. I'm accept there are presentations that might well warrant consideration of a diagnosis. I'm suggesting we might well benefit from lifting the threshold, at least just a tad.

I raised a child who was always tapping his pencil, his fingers, anything to make a beat. However, his teachers thought he needed to be put on meds despite the objections of his pediatrician. I wish every little black boy is blessed with a teacher like this and a strong advocate like my son's pediatrician.

Oh yes.I did that for my 2 kids .I tune in to kids needs that they or no one could see their greatness.(the problem kids they say)they put my daughter out kindergarten for being talkative wont sit still and I wrote poems and speeches for competitions (she has awards from this.)she reads avidly ,quite articulate and has leadership skills. Teaching her dance now and sports.she is 10..I am in Jamaica so here they beat and diminish your child.did the same for my son he had autism couldnt learn at school he learns differenty.I coach him in sports.he is in the navy.I am a trained teacher who never fit within the narrow stuctures of the Jamaican classroom.Too rigid.I had to homeschool them to protect their future self.I gave them a voice so they could claim their power.thank you so much for posting.

Mr. Jenson is a real role model who inspires teachers to think outside the box and never takes students disruptive behaviour personally. A student's behaviour sometimes is just a sign for wrong methodology or an extraordinary ability in the student that needs to be noticed and raised in the kid. He highlighted a real quality that we should foster in ourselves as teachers, which is patience.

Moved to tears. I used to get in trouble for the same thing and general fidgeting and was often called hyperactive. Now, as I see my own boys similarly struggle at times, too, I really appreciate it when they have a teacher who recognises it, shows more patience and has tried to help, for example, by allowing them to have a piece of plasticine to fidget with below the desk. Some kids really do need to move in order to think or even relax.

My son's kindergarten teacher shared this video with the class (my son attends virtual school). I was in tears! 😭 My son has similar tendencies and I've always noticed music, in general, helps him focus and he is able to pickup on beats & rythms pretty quickly. God bless teachers like Mr. Jensen ❤

It's important to find that source and then help the child to find the right remedy for the situation. Mr. Jensen was a genius of a teacher. Wish there were more of them.

I just started working in a school setting last school year and I’ve been told multiple times that I shouldn’t grow too close to students and I should protect my mental health (mostly from outsiders but even from some within the building). Talking to students is my favorite part of my job and I’ve found that so many just want to be heard, and need someone to vent to. It’s heartbreaking but I wouldn’t trade those conversations for “a little peace”. I will continue to strive to be a Mr.Jensen!❤

As a teacher, I watched this video as part of a course called: "Teaching Students with Behavioural Needs". Getting to know the students is exactly the model of teaching that we are striving for. Learning about what they find motivating, interesting, frustrating and heartbreaking, is important for building trust and getting to understand the person behind the behaviour. If you can learn these things, you now have the information you need to really help them, both making personal connections to the curriculum and shifting problematic behaviours to more constructive ones. Probably the most important aspect of behaviour to keep in mind is that it is not about you, the teacher. They may be reacting to what you have done or said, but their reaction also comes from patterns of behaviour and personal issues that came long before you.

I had a very very similar experience with a teacher who took interest in what I was up to AND challenged me to be better. I have a great career, I've traveled the world, I am probably even alive because that man wouldn't let me settle for an A-, but more importantly... he took interest in who I was and what I was into. I’m a mommy of a “tapper” and (8 year old) drummer! I believe he has what people would diagnose as ADHD we’ve been blessed with teachers who allow him to stand when he works and other minor adaptations to the classic classroom environment. I honestly believe little boys were not designed to be sitting for 6-7 hours a day. They need lots of outside time to run around and play. Unfortunately schools these days are not designed for ample play.

I was that child too, tapper, pen chewer, foot tapper, doodler, etc. only this year I was diagnosed with ADHD. Your child will be successful - just let the path to his success meander a little bit. I have 2 advanced degrees and am successful in my career. Keep going, mama bear!

I am a middle school teacher who showed this to both of my classes today ( 8th graders) and talked about what it means to be kind and support others to be their best selves. I also wanted my students who do fidget to see this and know their energy is there to express something. Nothing is wrong. You also reminded me that just like you, I had a student who was a tapper quite a few years ago. Luckily my dad is a tapper ( and an avid musician), so I knew the signs. This is incredible! I woke up this morning from a dream about being a middle school student. I remembered this young man, who I used to be inspired by, whenever he would play the drums. I was a closed off shy kid, and I would think, man I wish I could just let loose in front of people, I wish I could allow myself to bang on these drums in the rhythms that my heart felt. I wish I could smile and welcome conversation with kids I didn’t know. I remember this kid, who seemed to do this effortlessly and, I know he never knew this, but I use to admire this person and his ability to do these things. His name was Clint, so the moment you received those sticks, you started inspiring others, whether you knew it or not. Many years have past and I forgot about moments like these, until I awake from a dream, remembering this name, why, I don’t know. So I look this person up and, come across this quote “ It’s not about being the best in the World. It’s about being the best for the World.” Be a Clint Pulver God bless!

I conducted a training on last week for shift supervisors for an adolescent treatment facility. I showed this video to the team and asked the question, "Why was it important for me to show you this?" The first thing all said was "to make us cry" but it was what followed that was powerful. One of the supervisors stated the video was "an important lesson for supervisors not to react so quickly with the conclusion to fire a direct report when a situation is contrary". The team left the class experience empowered to show more patience towards others and shifting solution of an action plan of support and training before giving up. Thanks for assisting in getting this point across. This was beautiful.

Clint is a member of a church I go to, a couple of days ago our church had an activity and we all got called into the chapel for something. We all walked in and got seated and they pulled up Zoom and Clint was on the other end. He told us that story. After the story, he pulled out his drum sticks and played an amazing drum solo for us.

This is amazing! I was the same way in my adolescent years, always tapping on table tops and my desk at school and never really even noticing... One day out at my dad's place I was doing it and he looked at me and said "we should get you a set of bongos or something." I said "bongos? Why??" He said "you've been tapping beats for the past hour, I think you could be a drummer." The thought had never even crossed my mind before. He took me to his friend's condo in the same building who was a wicked drummer, and he sat me down and gave me my first lesson, and from there I was hooked. But being 15 with little money, and living with a mother not so supportive of music, I didn't have a chance to keep pursuing it (my dad lived out of town). But I tapped and tapped and tapped my pens and pencils throughout the rest of high school, practicing what I had learned that day. Ended up getting a few lessons a little later on from a sister's friend, who even let me borrow a kit for a couple months (at the behest of my mother) so I could practice at home. But after those few months I was without a kit again... But, after a long time of hearing me play and talk about it, my mother came around, and her and the rest of my family gave me my first kit for a graduation gift at age 17... I'm 25 now and I haven't looked back. In two local bands and working on an album with each one. I truly believe that I was out on this planet to drum. I only wish the potential had been noticed earlier as my only regret is not getting to play longer than I have. But ultimately I am grateful... I love this!

It's truely inspiring. Being a teacher myself I wish to have this impact on my students w be a reason for them to find themselves. I believe that this is a valuable lesson for all, teacher or not, to think before judge and find ways to utilise what people may think is a flaw to an advantage. Thank you Mr.Jensen, I hope there are many more of you in this world.

All children are fidgeters .. there should be an opportunity for all of them to experience playing drums in school. . I personally always craved the chance to play them but it never happened. The most thrilling part of any parade, for me, is when the drummers march by. . A REALLY GOOD drummer can make or break a musical band. Kudos to Mr. Jenson for his caring insight and encouragement for Clint.

Thank you for your story. The video made me cry. Thank God for Mr Jenson. I have a 3yr grandson who is all spinning anything he can pick up. Also takes the dog’s water bowl (with or without) and will turn it over and get the nearest thing to bang on it. He started when he was able to sit up. But he just started talking a few weeks ago and sings happy birthday. Maybe if I give him drums for Christmas he can express his frustration rather than throwing and breaking things or banging his head and crying. Thank you so much for your amazing story.
