That wire is called the agitator wire and is supposed to go up into the hopper to help pull seed through the gate.

Another interesting segment. Isn't it amazing how people back then found a way to make their lives easier without electricity? Many call it the simpler life but they truly worked harder than we ever thought about.

Yeah they sure did Belinda. Thats one reason why they were healthier I would bet !

I got curious and googled to see what 1A had looked like. 😄 I didn’t find it but did go down a rabbit hole and saw a bunch of models including the modern ones. It’s crazy how they have evolved so much but still pretty much do the same thing as the old ones. There’s a neat little pdf on the history of the company on the website too that’s a pretty interesting read! Thanks for showing us the neat machine!

I actually planted a bunch about a week ago in a partly shady bare spot I had. I planted some more today that will get more sun so I hope they do ok in the heat we have. Since I just have small patches here and there to throw seeds in, I am getting pretty good at succession planting so I have stuff I can pick as long as possible. I will do that cut and come again method like your friend taught you but you can never have enough mustard greens. I also planted a bunch of turnips because I love their greens too. 😋 I think that is the newer model I saw a demonstration video for that made me realize how similar the design still is to that older one. I still think that’s pretty neat that the overall design and function hasn’t changed much.

@@metcalfmills5679: Mine are going in this coming week, along with turnips and Daikon radishes, plus a few other radish seeds I have, too. Anything special I should know? Never planted them before. Because it has taken so long for me to get the garden ready, planting is way late. We could use a few good rains here, yet Waverly flooded last week. Crazy weather patterns around here. Some of these seeds will have to wait until next spring.

My grandfather had a clipper that was a little newer. It was like brand new. He had a pile of different seaves for it. At one time they put an electric motor on it. Wish I had it today.

Thats a really cool deal to see how this ancient machine works. It looks like a useful tool that I hope doesn't get to be in much higher demand if you know what I mean. Are you looking to restore it, so that the seed inlet is even, or is the originalité of more concern? Thank you for the show.

I love watching your videos. I came over from Perma Pasture Farms. It is really impressive to see how you bring these pieces of equipment back to life. These types of equipment and your skills will be highly prized when there is NO electrical power to run things. You are a great teacher. Keep going

Hey Justin that is cool. I love how that agitation is caused offset shaft. This is all being done by agitation gravity and airflow. Were these owned by farmers or only by the mills? Thank you blessings bye now

Has it been in your family for many years? Any back-story about this device? Do you still use it? I wonder how much it cost when it was new. It’s fascinating how it all operates from a single hand crank.

Only recently came across your channel and have been going thru your past videos. Started with v1. I noticed on this one you turned the hand crank counter clockwise. This seems unusual.

There is a correct rotation, which is determined by the fan and whether, or not, the fan belt is crossed or straight.
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Ай бұрын
@charlielawson2510 yes correct, this cleaner requires counter clockwise cranking in order for the fan to spin correctly.
