Was a U.S. Navy officer at a reception at the Sydney Opera House when this song came on a TV in the background. Bought the record the next day. Song ended up in my personal Top 10 for 1989 and is #26 on my all-time list. Takes me back to that evening!

Great memories of 1989 in Melbourne. Reminds me of a girl named Kerry who I worked with then. This single peaked at #5 in Melbourne but didn't chart in the Aust Top 50 for some reason.

I remember this song from the school bus in 89. Made me feel proud and safe in those years. Remembered the lyrics so well I was able to catch up and download when Napster started late 99. So underated which was a shame as Clive deserved so much more.

I loved this song when it came out and still have the single. It was great being a teenager in Australia in the 80s.

Still have this on 7 inch picture sleeve and am still as surprised now, as I was then, that it didn't go higher than #50 for one mere week. Sounds very James Reyne-ish for the era. Ripping tune.

This was and is still one of my favourites songs, what a pity he only had one other release "Friends & Lovers. This guy should of been an absolute Aussie star, this is one that slipped through the cracks, pity no record company had the balls to give him a recording contract. Great voice, lyrics. This was a hit in 89 for quite a while.

Actually, Clive released 4 singles between 1989 and 1992. After this one was 'Naturally' (on my ohnoitisnathan96 channel) in mid-1989, and then 'Whenever You Lay Your Hands On Me' in 1991 (on my bubblingdownunder channel - audio only; a video exists but I don't have it).

wikipeadia says it went #39 but this might be in victoria and not australia.clive young released "naturally" then two more singles "whenever you lay your hands on me " and " friends and lovers ". only the last two were on cd (when the world goes 'round) . i remember friends and lovers so it must have got airplay". the cd is fantastic but rare and expensive but beg, borrow and steal to get it.(actually don't steal, never steal.lol)

It peaked at #39 on the Australian Music Report chart, which ARIA took over from in June 1988. The AMR chart folded eventually, in 1998. ARIA was the self-declared 'official' chart while the two charts co-existed. 'Something Special' peaked at #50 on the ARIA chart. I found the video for 'Naturally' earlier in 2021, which I've uploaded on my ohnoitisnathan96 channel.

I flipping love this song. It was on a 89 compilation tape I had back in the day. I really need to get this song again. Tried iTunes and no dice. I need it on my iPod.

It was on Hits of '89 Volume 2. I have an mp3 rip of it. PM or message me on facebook (link on my channel page) if you want it.

ohnoitisnathan8 Thanks so much. I was actually lucky enough to get hold of a copy through a friend of mine last Friday who does a radio show on a local community station. I couldn’t believe he had it, and he couldn’t believe I knew the song. It prompted him to play the song on his show last weekend and he gave a spiel about it afterwards. Thanks for your reply. Daryl

I will never forget this song - loved it back then when it was first released and still today. What is frustrating is that this song and Clive's album 'When the World Goes Round' are not available on itunes - why???? The album is wonderful!

After having this song in my head for years (I remember it from the radio back in 1989 when I was 18 but never bought a copy and frustratingly couldn't remember the artists name, or even that he was Australian!), I finally found this video a few months ago, but like Tracey Below was frustrated to find the song isn't anywhere online to purchase! Further searching online reveals that as far as I can see, this song never appeared on any album (it's not on "When the World goes Round", which was from 1992). The only place it DID appear was on a compilation album called "Hits of 89 Volume 2". It does crop up on ebay from time to time on CD (there are heaps of Vinyl and Tape copies as well), I managed to snap one up the other day and it just arrived, yay :)

This song got a fair bit of airplay on Melbourne Radio in 1989 even though it only reached #50

While it only peaked at #50, it did spend 17 weeks in the top 100, so stuck around for a while.

i have an Eon Fm top 40 chart here that shows this at #10 on 4/5/89 & i'm pretty sure i remember it being pretty high on the charts on video hits etc too.
@ohnoitisnathan811 жыл бұрын
Eon FM's top 40 chart was neither an official nor national chart; I'm not sure what they based it on. Video Hits used the Australian Music Report chart, which existed alongside ARIA between mid 1988 and approx 1998. On that chart (which ARIA used prior to producing their own chart from mid 1988), 'Something Special' peaked at #39. You can check for yourself that this peaked at #50 on the ARIA chart here: australian-charts.com/showitem.asp?interpret=Clive+Young&titel=Something+Special&cat=s . Also, I remember seeing it at #50 for one on the Rage top 50 (which used the ARIA chart) in 1989.
