Someone stole the guts out of the converter in mine. Amazing how the thieves carefully got inside the muffler and got all the catalyst out of it then reinstalled everything. It’s been running like a scalded ape for the last five years so I didn’t make a police report out. The plastic covers are so much cooler now too.

Never though about using a ultrasonic cleaner for small engine mufflers with a catalytic converter. Good tip!

Personally on my own equipment I remove the converter after the warranty is up. By removing it and retuning the carburetor you will find your equipment runs cooler and lasts longer. Sometimes depending on the brand of equipment you can find more power after carburetor is retuned. But always retune carburetor or you could damage your equipment. On customers equipment I use a propane torch and burn them clean, never thought of using my ultrasonic cleaner.

6 suggestions that can help reduce exhaust coke and soot: 1. best ethanol free fuel you can find....91 minimum. 2. fresh fuel, less than 30 days old, stored in a proper sealed container 3. synthetic low ash 2 cycle oil. avoid cheap dino non-synth 2 cycle oil 4. Properly gapped spark plug with regular cleaning. 5. Properly gapped magneto and good ground (no corrosion) 6. proper hi/lo tuning to spec! *(yes, this will require regular checking and also a tach!) the last suggestion above is probably the most important. the proper fuel air ratio is going to dictate most signficantly unburned exhaust fuel and this causes coke and soot. other things: once a year, right after the summer cutting season: best time to tear down the engine and do a complete cleaning of bore and piston including crank. I use a non-chlorinate berry-man chem dip product. Soak for 2 days then clean... also...inspect clutch and drum for excessive wear. If you get bogged down and the clutch begins to slip, this causes the engine to suddenly rip into a much higher rpm range without a equivalent load. This "excited" state will cause a lot of unburned or poorly burned fuel directly out the exhaust port and into the muffler. lastly, modding exhaust ports and mufflers is a real thing. but understand what you are doing and how this might also effect timing. If you don't know, don't do it. If you do know how to adjust timing (and not that shadetree shaft key method), then modifying the muffler and possibly the exhaust port will do wonders to open up these little engines and create less coke and soot buildup. wear ear protection. You really don't want hearing loss before you are old. It really sucks

I had gotten a STIHL fs45 that i had converted into an fs55 when i got it the spark arrester sounded clogged when i pulled it out the screen tube was clear but could not see through it from the nozzle end so i stuck a small pin inside the nozzle and found a mud dauber had made an exhaust plug of dirt inside the spark arrester assembly about 1/4 inch inside the nozzle just enough to where the screen looked clean it was about a 1/8th inch thick plug of red clay inside glad the screen was intact otherwise the problem could have been much worse.

My srm 225 does this every 6 months and the spark arrester is clogged, I was told by Echo to just take them out and throw them away. Mine will idle, but won't rev up, I know i have to replace that spark arrester and it always runs fine after that.

Yes. Also called 4-stroking. When you hear that, it means it's not too lean. You can clean that up by going leaner but it's better being on the rich side of dancing on a pin head. Too lean, you roast the piston while runninh hard because the piston overheats if detonation takes place. The definition of detonation is when the fuel stops burning too early. Peak cylinder pressure is supposed to occur at 15 degrees atdc, not before. So stay out of trouble by avoiding a lean mixture, a 2-stroke will make the most power right before it lean-siezes. You know how they act when the fuel tank is running out or there's a crankcase air leak (such as crankshaft seals).

I have the 2620T and yes, it does have a catalytic converter. I bypassed mine by drilling through the baffle where the exhaust comes out. It runs a lot cooler and the plastic doesn’t get so hot. As a mechanic, you’re not supposed to bypass or remove converters but I always do it on my personal equipment.
