You have to use the one with the Sowter output transformers.. gives it a lot more low end, which this seems to be missing. Also, you’re playing way too long before switching the pre, like honestly
@Halfstar32 жыл бұрын
The Neve sounds cleaner and more modern. The Stam has that grainy, imperfect sound that in comparison on individual instruments people would say sounds worse. That's because modern components were used for the updated Neves, older, more "imperfect" components were used in Stam to deliberately recreate the dirty sound of the originals. The Stam 1073 sowter transformers have since been updated to be even closer to the originals apparently.

Nice demo 👏🏻 I've never tried the Stam, but I have done a side-by-side of the NEVE snd the BAE. There's nothing wrong with either of them. If you heard them on playback, you probably couldn't hear a difference; however, when comparing side-by-side, the BAE is ever so slightly more open. On a personal note, I prefer the 1066 over the 1073.

The Neve sounds so much better IMHO, the lows are rich and warm, the Stam sounds thinner! Actually I found the low mids thinner on all examples with the Stam. Neve wins for me!!!
@joshuastam77045 жыл бұрын
This is the first prototype I made, very old, the new Stam with the Sowter LO1166 replica is much thicker. I have been making those for a few years. Thickness is not up to the manufacturer but the output transformer.
@JohnBrownemonuments5 жыл бұрын
The stam is more focused on the upper end of the mids vs the neve on the lower end, the Stam is also tighter sounding to my ears so I think it would work better on metal guitars vs the neve.
@hawkeshiphop2 жыл бұрын
Your ending conclusion about the lacking low end and low mids on your voice is why I’ve been having such a hard time picking a clone🤦♂️ I do rap vocals & have never been able to achieve that “weighted full bodied vocal that you feel in your chest” with plugins alone. So really hoping there’s a 1073 clone out there for $1000 or less that will help me achieve this 🤞🏼 Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for making this John! I have a Sowter mod 1073 on backorder (been waiting about a year now... Brazil's lockdown hasn't helped...) I'm still really excited to get it because I don't have the neve budget but man... the real thing is kinda on another level isn't it? I did think the Neve on distorted guitar had a little too much low mids but the top is also different and is really special on the Neve. Sounds compressed and mixed it is incredible. I've used the 1073lb before but must say I think it's possible the 1073DPA sounds even better.

How is the Stam now?
@RUGBYmusic6 ай бұрын
@@anthonyrock5039 I had to wait like 2 years which is really too long. Things should be a little better now since we are out of the pandemic. Sound wise it is really nice. The sowters have a little less 2-6k bite than the carnhill ones do. My only reference for that is from Stam’s own audio examples. It’s gooey fat, and slow in the best way possible. I’ve been using it a lot for vocals. Sometimes I wish it had a tiny bit more bite (2-6k) on synths and stuff it can be a little bit too fat sometimes. But yes it’s huge sounding and you can tell the difference when you are going through it!
@jamjestrysiek4 жыл бұрын
The only thing I would maybe add would be the sound without any of the preamps at the beginning as the reference. :) They sound different. It would be interesting to hear the difference in the mix as well :)
@CLaw-tb5gg4 жыл бұрын
Having never used one in person I always wonder how much of a difference these sort of things even make to the sound vs. going straight into a reasonably high-quality audio interface. I struggle to believe even if it does make a difference it's worth three grand, especially considering any difference is probably obliterated as soon as it's in a mix.
@minecraftjedi033more34 жыл бұрын
when you have low quality preamps you dont get as much headroom as you would when you buy a highend preamp which to me at least is very important as it allows you to be more dynamic, or just louder in genral. High end preamps also tend to require less eq in the mix, and specifically the 1073 have a really nice airy sound which would otherwise have to be done using an eq (my favourite for air eqing Maag Eq4 or 2). You have to decide for yourself if its worth it, but if you're going to use only an interface i'd recommend an audient one, because they have pretty nice preamps in them at a reasonable price.
@CLaw-tb5gg4 жыл бұрын
@@minecraftjedi033more3 Sure, but if you've got a good-quality audio interface then noise isn't going to be much of an issue anyway. I've got an Apollo Twin Duo, and I fail to believe in purely fidelity/noise floor/etc. something like this or even a Neve is going to be any improvement.
@minecraftjedi033more34 жыл бұрын
C. Law i mean its entirely up to you to decide if its worth it. Also if you really want to figure out for yourself ive heard sound pure lets you demo some of their products, but im not sure about how that works right now because of the pandemic.
@CLaw-tb5gg4 жыл бұрын
@@minecraftjedi033more3 I've come to the conclusion it really isn't. To be fair I've never used a hardware 1073, but I've used plenty of software emulations that people with a lot of experience have claimed is, at least on moderate settings, indistinguishable from the real thing. I've run blind tests on other people and generally people really don't seem to be able to hear any difference (there *is* a difference, mainly in the low end, but it's extremely subtle and generally not at all audible in a mix). Fancy preamps made much, much more sense in the days when their purpose was to actually literally be your preamp in your desk, rather than using it as something to colour the sound going into a super-clean preamp like we all have in our interfaces. Because then it was a straight choice between good preamp or shitty preamp. Nowadays.. yeah. Unless you're going the dawless all-hardware route I think you're getting extremely little bang for your buck buying a Neve, and should just get a good audio interface and EQ/comp plugins for far, far less money.
@minecraftjedi033more34 жыл бұрын
C. Law yeah i cant say the plugin or anything is bad as ive never really gotten a chance to try out the uad plugin, but ive heard a lot of ab testing and i seem to always be able to find a difference and obviously theres a huge difference between a final hardware mix and a plugin mix (i do have access to bx plugins but through plugin alliance not ua), but really as long as you have a summing mixer plugins wont be a bad option to use. In short words a summing mixer mixes down several tracks outside of the software adding more headroom and a bit of hardware coloration though that varies between units. If I want to only use plugins i would use at least this, because it really is amazing.
