Electro has been enjoying much success ever since the arrival of Dendro back in Version 3. But there's a growing concern of electro characters, specifically DPS units, becoming overly dependent on Dendro, is it causing problems with character diversity? Today we'll be looking at the first Electro character to be released in almost 2 years: Clorinde, and see how she highlights Electro's current diversity problem, or lack thereof.

I really want to see more reactions like freeze. A reaction that doesn't multiply damage, doesn't do any transformative damage, in fact it just doesn't do any extra damage in general. But what makes it very unique from the other reactions is that it brings something else into the game. While freeze isn't original, it's very unique and makes the gameplay feel more diversed. Imagine if we can get a sandstorm reaction or something that can debuff the enemies or blind/immobilize them or even make them act differently... It would be infinitely interesting and fun.

her problem is not too short, but cooldown of the ability is much longer than its uptime. 7.5s vs 16 s, when Furina has 20 sec CD and 30 sec uptime.

I think we need to start talking about the Nahida problem in the same way the Bennett problem has been discussed. She's so universal and overtuned that they effectively HAVE to balance Electro and Dendro DPS' around Nahida's support abilities, toning them down so that Nahida doesn't shoot them into wild powercreep spaces. But that then leaves you in a space where they're then really underwhelming feeling outside of Nahida teams. I guess Fischl can be talked about in that vein too, given that driving her is half their jobs as well. I was so eager to see her as a unit that could bring Electrocharged to the forefront, or was balanced well around Chevreuse teams. What we got, while strong, just feels ... unfortunate. I can't wrap my head around why they dropped that uptime nerf on the last beta patch, all it did was limit her teams out of nowhere.

I feel like in general we're at an impasse with this game. Dendro's release was a breath of fresh air cause it allowed for new reactions, and for both old and new characters to be explored. Nowadays, "unique" mechanics are honestly quite difficult to implement since we already have so many niches and character roles; you can only really diversify so much till we get literal copies of a character but in a different element. On the opposite side, too much uniqueness is bad too since it might just completely isolate the character from the already existing roster. Maybe just give geo some dendro reactions or something lmao or more reactions (the ousia pneuma was basically negligible/barely noticeable) Edit: added some stuff

I agree with the impasse. To me, it feels like unless they go for a different approach for reactions themselves. There's nothing much but scaling numbers and what you've mentioned above. Though given this how many characters that saturate the game as is with this limited frame, I can't be too surprised.

On top of that, we have WuWa’s combat to look at and can see that they indeed can make really creative kits with just 3 (or 4 if you count intro/outro swaps) buttons. I think Genshin’s problem is that they’re TOO casual. They don’t want to take any risks and this applies to the whole game and not just their combat. This is fine in the beginning, but gets stale especially after 3 years.

completely agree. we need more reactions. i honestly don’t understand why they wouldn’t give us a reaction with geo and dendro - the only reason i can think of is because it would basically make dendro way too overpowered… but with how underwhelming geo feels sometimes (Navia is the only exception), it could really use that type of buff. i’m hoping with the release of Natlan they’ll be rolling out more burgeon related stuff as it was so outshined by hyperbloom and bloom. it would even be cool if they introduced a different reaction other that crystalized for pyro and geo as like a lava type reaction (cause pyro land) but that’s just me severely coping lmao. and i remember when the pneuma and ousia stuff was announced it just felt so… underwhelming and a bit gimmicky. i mean it makes sense when it comes to stuff like the lore but combat wise it really doesn’t feel like it matters.

Clorinde is a must=pull for me but not for gameplay reasons - she's pretty much every electro dps ever but with a little bond of life and a very cool burst animation that rivals the queen of bursts herself - raiden shogun. I do hope the next dendro unit - the perfumer lady - will be different and fun to play.

I believe that Vars should have mentioned just how much Fischl just invalidates personal damage contribution of electro on field dps. Not only she's dealing a comparable damage to electro main DPS in aggravate teams, but also the problem is, like xiangling who deals damage independently from her on field dps but can synergise with hydro/electro on fielder, fischl does that AND is boosted from electro application both through a4 and c6, especially a4. She synergises with and is boosted by her electro main dps in aggravate.

I personally would love to have Superconduct get some love. One of the most forgotten and forsaken reactions in the game. I mean, I know it is mandatory for Physical DPS, but that is exactly the problem. The AoE Cryo explosion is very fun to play around, and contrary to Overload which can damage 1 enemy only once, Superconduct can hit twice. A buff to the reaction, or characters that play around it like Chevrousse with Overload. In fact even players forget about Superconduct lol, everyone talks about Electro-charged, Frozen, Crystallize and other reaction that need more love but they never mention Superconduct.

I think, they failed at that when trying to appeal with Mika and Shatter boy (forgot his name). And I'm not convinced we will get another attempt not before the Cryo empire. As for physical dps, I think they don't wana hurt their Eula sales any further as she is currently the only solo physical unit. Not-so fun fact: Her Night Vigil state duration used to last longer than 7.5 seconds. If memory serves me right, it was initially 9 seconds, but suddenly knocked down as the final adjustment before release. I have a couple theories; Either they did this thinking that she's too powerful, more powerful than Raiden Shogun. Or, they want you to pull for constellations.

What I like about Clorinde is that she is way more flexible than any Electro character we have received since launch. She has: the Qiqi/Furina team, Chevy teams, QuickBloom teams, Aggravate teams, and I'm sure you can even play her in mono-electro if you want. Maybe I'll try that, I'd just have to actually build Sara.

I think Clorinde is a well-balanced character that is very fun to play. Not every character that comes out has to powercreep the entirety of the other characters to be viable and good. She can 100% clear abyss and be a valuable pull. I find it good that her power level is not overtuned To make an electro hypercarry with high scalings, I would imagine they would give them an anti-synergy with dendro I suspect that as more dendro supports come out, dendro / electro reactions will turn even more broken than they already are. Maybe bond of life characters themselves end up getting buffs with future supports that touch on that niche. So it could be they designed her kit to be well-balanced now, to boost it to broken later

She is indeed very fun to play. She is not power creeping the entire electro roster, like Neuvillete and Arlecchino did for their respective element. But she is not weak by any means. With constellations, her damage can actually be outstanding.

I hesitate to see anything wrong with a lot of the aspects Clorinde is criticized for in these examples... Sure, for the meta players she will probably not bring much new or much value to the overtuned teams they already have. But for everyone else? Clorinde still puts out extremely serviceable damage, a unique playstyle, gorgeous animations, and a very comfy experience with her BoL and healing mechanics. Could she have introduced a new teambuilding niche for Electro? Sure. But did she really need to, or is just being a well-designed and fun character enough?

My main problem with this it’s how little off field dendro support exists, nahida it’s probably the best we will ever seen for off field dendro application until we get a dendro dragon sovereign and that makes team building quite boring in the long run, alhaitham greatest strength it’s not his numbers but his on field dendro application combined with decent personal dmg and very flexible rotations, meanwhile we have plenty of great off field electro applicators making electro on field dps a more stunted role

the current electro on fielders have potential, like cyno probably had the highest dmaging quickbloom team in the game. but he definitely has his certain issues, Keqing is easier but her multipliers are pretty low, and clorinde is like the middle.

Something else that makes aggravate and hyperbloom so monotonous is that Nahida is the only Dendro support capable of doing the job *well*. Every other Dendro off-fielder suffers from one or more major issues that makes them so much worse than Nahida. I say this as someone who loves and still uses Collei. Maybe Emilie will change this, but I highly doubt it. No other Archon has nearly as much of an iron grip over their element as Nahida.

Now I may have missed the point of this video, cause I took it's message as "Clorinde is disappointing as a hypercarry, due to her still relying on (dendro) reactions and short uptime", but I'd argue that she is not even supposed to be one. I'd say she fulfills the same role as Childe, as both have good on-field numbers (with rather short uptime), solid burst damage and lots of elemental application with Clorinde having the focus on reactions build into her kit. Again, I could just be misunderstanding stuff and thus this whole paragraph of a comment could be completely useless/invalid. 😅

not every character needs to be on Neuvillette's power level, her DPS window is enough to do a lot of damage. Her main advantage is she's a slightly stronger Raiden Shogun that does not need a healer on her team, so you can use offensive supports for her

I think people are just over obsessed with top damage. Her quickbloom team is definitely the best, no question. But the others have felt fine. I've used chevruse, fischl, dehya for 30-second kenki clears. Furina, yelan, xianyun, or Jean for electro charged feels fine.

Did we all just forget that Chevreuse buffs Electro and Pryo damage equally? Everyone speaks like she only buffs Pryo, lol. My approach is exactly the same as with Arlecchino. Clorinde, Raiden, Bennett, Chevreuse. Chevreuse buffs, Clorinde uses her Burst and Skill until it times out, swap to Raiden, Burst and run its time down, repeat. Bennett ult between Cheveruse or just before Raiden. Probably going to swap Bennett for Thoma though, because it's really difficult keeping the fight in Bennett's circle with Clorinde's dashing. Also, it's minor, but she does gain Bond of Life based around the healing she receives, so that can lead to instances where you get a few more max damage Skill use in. Though I REALLY wish they'd show Bond of Life as a % rather than just trying to decipher the bar. Whose going to realistically think that 100% is the halfway mark?

i think one thing is that i feel like a unit occupying a different niche than other characters of their element, while obviously good, doesn't have the impact that it could. for instance, it doesn't really matter that lyney is a mono pyro unit vs a regular vape carry. like yes it changes his teams and whatnot but there really arent that many situations where choosing vape vs mono pyro makes a significant difference. so while giving characters different archetypes is obviously good for player experience, it actually has little impact on game play, at least in terms of reactions. im hoping the new end game mode will incentivize trying more unconventional team comps cuz of the element restrictions

If you don't play her, much like Alhaitham, she looks like Keqing 2.0, but try to play her like you would play Keqing and will be a very shit run, she cannot refresh electro easely in aggravate, cannot switch to tank hits or refresh buffs, her lung attacks without auto-target are a pain in ass to make hit the enemies, her skill duration is too short, her ult has less s than Keqing, etc. Their kit design and animations sure are very similar so i understand the memes, but the actual gameplay is very different, Clorinde is much more harder to play than Keqing, even with Keqing doesn't having self heal, she still more ease to mantain alive as you can stop her combos without losing much DPS. Besides, once you get Clorinde playstyle right, she's an amazing DPS, has more damage than Keqing, her lunge attack, when positioned right, really helps in AoE, and with Furina her self healing really makes her tank. Also she works surpriseing well in overload and electro-charged teams (this last with Furina).

Playing Wuwa has made me realize that Hoyo should really step up their gameplay mechanics. Probably not pulling on Siegwinne and Emilie because their kits are nothing special. Chlorinde does also fit in this category, but her burst is just too damn cool to pass on.

It's a bit too late for them to implement this, but from day 1, I've said that it would make sense for electro to be more focused on multi-target damage. I had imagined the elements fulfilling the roles close to the paths in HSR. I imagined it something along the lines of: Pyro being hunt/destruction, Hydro being harmony/nihility, Cryo being nihility, geo being preservation, anemo being erudition/harmony, and electro being erudition. Before the release of dendro, these relationships between the elements and the paths could be seen in the elemental reactions. For example (aside from crystalize with every element), ALL electro reactions dealt AOE damage, ALL pyro reactions dealt high damage that could be used against bosses effectively, ALL cryo reactions acted as some kind of debuff (cryo itself is a debuff, and sets up for melt damage), hydro reactions were kind of just used to buff other elements, geo is geo, and anemo does AOE damage and provides a bunch of buffs. Following that model, characters of specific elements wouldn't necessarily be shoehorned into a single playstyle either. Look at HSR for example. Outside of characters that fit the bill of their respective path, we have Argenti who is an erudition character that can deal single target damage. Seele is a hunt character that can take out groups of enemies. Robin is a harmony character that deals strong damage. Acheron is a nihility character that kills everything. These niches would be useful to genshin. Imagine if stages with 2 or more bosses were cleared slightly easier with electro because of AOE, or if stages with just one boss were slightly better with, or if stages with swarms of enemies could be debuffed by cryo (oh wait thats just morgana comp). And of course, in this scenario, they shouldn't make using the proper element a requirement. But it would make sense to give some elements an advantage in specific scenarios (which they already do). Before dendro was released, I was hoping that it would be some kind of damage over time centered element. Burn was already a reaction (and one that did single target damage, thus matching my idea for pyro). That would give dendro it's own niche separate from other damage types. I had hoped that dendro+electro would create a corrosion like effect that spread between enemies (for the DOT+AOE style), and i hoped that cryo+dendro would be some kind of debuff somewhat like the quantum break effect from hsr.

I think the short field time DPS might be a new trend that they'll start giving us supports for soon. I remember when Navia came out, people were talking about how her field time is kinda short, too. I think we might see some supports in Natlan that either have very short cooldowns for essentially a revival of the quick-swap style or very long-lasting buffs so you can play two short field time DPS characters in the same team. I play my Navia with Raiden, and the only downside is that I don't really have room on the team for anyone to buff Raiden, but the ability to use Raiden's burst while I'm waiting for both charges of Navia's skill to come back is nice. I could definitely see that working well with Clorinde instead of Raiden, and I think we'll get more options in the future

I think Clorinde’s man issue isn’t even her dmg, it’s her uptime. If it were longer, she would’ve been much better in other teams. The shorter uptime doesn’t mesh her kit, she’s a sustained Dps who’s forced to frontload. A longer uptime would make things like taser and Chevreuse teams much more competitive

The problem isn't the short uptime, but the lack of characters to team up with that works well for that short duration. Most meta characters have long uptime so they're not really a good fit with Clorinde's rotation. We currently have Chevreuse which has a conditional 100% uptime regardless of the on-fielders uptime duration so we'll see if we got something similar coming up with Natlan.

I really hope future electro DPS(es) will iterate on the consumable energy mechanics that Sethos seems to be an experiment of. Energy Recharge is a stat that is especially intertwined with electro after all, just as HP is for many hydro characters.

"The first viable electro hyper carry" is a stretch. HyperRaiden was definitely not only viable but one of the best hypercarry teams during V2. It just really fell of on V3 with the arrival of Dendro and the massive Powercreep present because of it. Electro stayed so long without a character because they needed to bring everyone else to the same level as hyperbloom / aggravate, and tbh electro really didn't need that help. It's sad that's what happened to electro now, I'd really like a electro-focused Overload DPS or an meta-relevant tazer team again, or even a renaissance for raw-dmg electro burst DPS like we had with HyperRaiden during it's peak. Also it's weird they KEEP TRYING THESE SUSTAINED DMG DEALERS. Electro, conceptually, is the element of Energy (as demonstrated by the focus of their archon kit). And as the element of energy, it works best when it's" inconsistent" bursts of dmg. You first build up some kind of energy, and then release it all, makes sense... So why do they keep giving these characters sustained-dmg numbers when its been underwhelming 3 times in a row now....

sustained damage can work but if they are pretty good with their numbers and uptimes, i guess that's kind of why Al and Neuvi are top tier dpses even if they can't nuke for a million damage.

I apologize if I am being rude when I say this but when I watch the video the point you bring up again and again is the fact that she has low numbers so that she can not be a hypercarry and I need to ask is it bad for her to not be a hypercarry? Not every new fountain character needs to be a good hypercarry to be a good unit I just personally think that you are making a big deal out of something that isn't a big deal at all again i apologize if I am being rude just wanted to point that out

My friend you are quite civil don’t worry haha. I know I made it sound like she HAD to be a hypercarry but the main intent with this video was that version 4 was all about going against the conventional routines of each element (like how navia didn’t go mono geo or how lyney doesn’t use vaporize) so I expected the same thing for Clorinde where they would try an “off meta” design for her, only for her to end up the same as every other electro character.

It would have been interesting if her kit was made just like Kafka from Star Rail where if an enemy is affected by DOT (in Genshin's case, Electro Charged or Burning) the damage of the duration of said DOT will explode instantly and apply multiplies and/or refreshes the DOT.

We got Chevreuse who boost electro and pyro damage when the 2 are together, then we got 2 dps units who use bond of life, a new mechanic (we even got a specific artefact set for it) and one is pyro and the other electro electro. My cracked theory is that we will get a pyro or electro character that give strong buff to character with bond of life (maybe the pyro archon) who will make bond of life overload team really good

You wouldn't have made this video if she was as strong DPS wise as Neuvillette. Wheres the video on Yelan's lack of variety? Her literally being a carbon copy of a character who has existed since 1.0? But no criticisms for her because she's meta. Arlecchino being another vape/mono pyro DPS? Wheres the video on that?

I came back to Genshin just for Clorinde. I gotta say, she did give me some hope with how fun the lunge mechanic is. But even with her signature weapon, C1 and a pretty min-maxed crit ratio, Spiral Abyss 12 was still a pain. It's fun dashing around and using the lunge as a pseudo dodge but the dmg just doesn't add up the same way my Navia (with her signature weapon and basically the same stats) does.

I like that they're adding more characters that experiment with Bond of Life, but she hasn't appeared in the story enough for me personally to care about her character all that much and I'd rather save for other characters I'm more likely to use (either interesting Natlan characters or reruns of new characters I already use like Furina or Xianyun for constellations)

Hoyo has to give me a damn good reason to give a damn about the whole bond of life stuff. Literally been using Glad set with Arlecchino perfectly fine without the new set. Maybe future Natlan characters might change it but so far Bond of Life is a pointless mechanic.

even tho i dont plan to pull for her, i have to say clorinde is probably one of if not the most fun character to play. its like combining yoimiya's pew pew with xiao's shing shing and keqing's ult on top of it clorinde's fun factor is a 10 for me

Through out watching your video on Chlorinde, It made me that she released to late within the game. With having characters such as Neuvillette , Navia , AL Haitham, Arlecchino, and many other DPs units . Chlorinde didn't really have anything to offer in my opinion. If she released around 4.5 or even earlier with in Fontaine updates I generally think she would've done better, since Fontaine was still fresh and new meta was still being forged she might have had a better time being a electro DPS. Now sadly this isn't the case but it's still disappointing that she was released in a time where she isn't really needed especially Arlecchino being the main focus for the bond of life mechanic, and with Natlan coming later this year she might just fade into obscurity. But that's just my opinion, I generally hope those who did pull for her have a great time using her.
