Great points; I hadn't seen this before. Thanks for reminding us of these things. Isn't it ironic that the "Gun Free Zones" can be the most dangerous zones in which to find yourself. Hickok45

I will confirm some of what Nutnfancy says here. With regards to training as a Marine, when ambushed, the best thing to do is move/run into the fire, not away from it. Initially, as a young Marine, this seemed crazy. The more you consider it, it is the best option. 1)They are then worried about getting shot at , which will affect their marksmanship 2) when running away you are just a target with your back to the enemy. 3) Moving to the fire, you have a chance to shoot them and stop the danger. I always carry and so does my wife..hopefully, we never have to put this kind of thing to the test.

I live in Canada. I still have carried something, for 35 years. Blades and baton. I live in a low crime area, but home invasions and bad stuff- wolves have become the norm here too. Thanks! This really reaffirms my philosophy for all those years.

Very well said Nutn, but the enigma is if no one acted on a MILITARY base where these people are trained to deal with such situations, who the hell is going to do it in a civilian scenario??? i have in the past , but i have security experience, but SheepDogs are few and far between in the normal world, we need MORE

Great video! Just a couple of months ago we had a shooter outside the courthouse in my hometown of Beaumont, TX. Although the shooter was on trial for felony child molestation, that didn't stop him from shooting multiple people before he could be stopped. However, no law abiding sheepdog would even have had a pocket knife since you get searched and disarmed upon entry to the courthouse. BTW, muggings are very common around here just outside of hospitals as well (another free fire zone).

If I had my Glock on me I'd like to think I'd run towards gunfire to save lives. But there is no way I'd charge a man with an assault rifle armed with nothing but courage and my fists. Of course I'd want to help people, but how could I possibly justify to my wife why I carelessly threw my life away with such a slim chance of making a difference? How could she justify to my 18 month old son when he gets older why his father isn't around to love him and care for him? I care for all people more than myself, but my family comes first every time. No question.

Depends on the situation, if i've got cover enough to get close, i'll take that chance, probably get killed anyway, why not do it trying to help people?

I've not heard of a stupid 'Sheepdog", brave , yes, but never stupid... The only time to charge, is when you know that you will be assaulted and there is no way out, then, everything you have inside must swell-up and an all out attack on the threat is demanded... If you are armed, then a armed response is applicable, not because you can, but, because it is the right thing to do... Chances are your in the Mall with your family, and all hell breaks loose, securing your family is first and foremost... Then and only then you should consider an attack on the perp...

Just got the paper work to carry concealed yesterday. It is something that I take very seriously. I am not a gun expert, but I hope to be able to become a sheepdog and help protect my fellow citizens. Turnaround is about 2 to 3 months up here in Maine however. Not counting the classes.

I have been denying that I'm a sheepdog but my intelligence and capability would be wasted if I bailed on having the courage to step up. This video inspired me to remember that we are all responsible for each other to an extent. I need to dedicate more to practice and this is a great argument to not get lazy.

fantastic video. everyday, for 30 years I have carried a gun, and other types weapons for a living. and everyday I have wondered "what if?" it is a legitimate question to ask of myself. but I know I will always run toward the gunfire, and not away from it. some of my best friends are sheep...they would never step up. I will. because I adhere to the patrolman's credo, which in part says, "I will survive..." my wife will not think of me as having thrown away my life, but be proud of me for stepping up when others would not. the sacrifice is a personal one, but one I would, and will make-every time. and as always: semper fi, carry on!!

Thank you nutnfancy, I watched this video about a year ago...just a few months ago my aunt who works at the bank as a teller was robbed at gunpoint in a "gun free" zone (and city...this is LA). Fortunately the robbers didn't kill anyone, but they did fire some shots in the direction of her! That is so scary that she ended up to quit her job. It is very sad that kind people are forced to obey a criminal's orders out of fear.

i think its important for sheepdogs to remember how much good it would have done in this situation to save possibly 10 people or more...think of the loss and damage done by the fallout by the loss of 10 goos people they are sons daughters fathers mothers uncles aunts granparents etc...i think its important to take this to heart what one madman can take from good families....ty for your time

Almost always armed here weather it be in my personal life or in connection with my duties for my job, nobody would ever suspect unless they are a close friend or family member. High percentage of carry is the key. Always being prepared for the wolf! I also carry in most gun free zones under HR- 218. Awsome vid on this Nutn, TNP ROCKS!

Great video as usual. I myself carry daily and I also prepare physically and mentally for some sort of bad situation. Some people like to say we sheep dogs are paranoid, or we are looking for trouble...that isn't the case. The sheep will always rely on the sheep dog whenever a bad situation comes along. That is not the case, I just couldn't sit back and let people be harmed or killed.

One thing I just realized..that at no point did you ever mention a belt. "Back in the day", we were given a class by Secret Service where they mentioned that a way to subdue even a large individual..was to remove an appropriately re-enforced belt... and after using your momentum to knock them off balance or down..quickly loop your belt around their neck and drag them with all your might towards the nearest door or item you can loop the belt around/through...go through the door..and close it.

The best thing I've heard on kill or not was from a marine I was privileged to draw as instructor in a defensive pistol class I attended. He said my job is to stop the threat. If that action results in the death of the aggressor, it's unintended, thus inconsequential to the purpose. What I got from that was don't go into it with the mindset to kill, but to do what it takes to stop the threat. It works for me.

Another awesome and well thought out video. Every time I see news coverage of a mass shooting, I always think, "Why doesn't anyone admit that an armed civilian could have stopped this?" When I saw the recent murder of 3 RCMP officers in Moncton, NB, the video shot from the living room of one of the houses on that street sickened me. It sickened me not only because it was footage of three brave police officers being gunned down in the street, but because it showed that in that entire neighborhood, not ONE HOUSE had a gun in it, and if any did, nobody had the resolve and the courage to deploy that weapon and put the cop-murdering bastard down. They sat there like helpless sheep and watched it happen. When I saw that, it made me angry, and I said to myself, "It will be a cold day in Hell before I let some evil little shit murder three police officers in front of my house. He'll be getting a chest full of rifle rounds before he knows what hit him." I couldn't live with myself if I did anything less.

I respect you greatly for standing up and talking like this Nutnfancy!!! I'm little pessimist and think that most of the public is very apathetic towards anything today, but there's always someone in the crowd, who is ready to do what's necessary to stand in way of evil. There was many more of those in previous generations( WW II men) as it requires very unique individual that's selfless and does what's right, no matter the danger. Today's values are little different.....

Good video. I'd like to add that one key thing you need to realize that *your life is in danger too*, not just those around you; the life you save by closing to engage may well be your own. You could be shot running for cover as easily as while closing to engage. Also, for your opponent, hitting a moving target isn't easy, particularly under stress. A fatal shot is even less likely. By rushing him, *you have an advantage*.

I did not see this video before my gunfight, but I did remember my research into samurai culture i.e hagakure, five rings, yagyu art of war and set those triggers when I became a concealed carrier. Ironically, I found that my 'unlock code' was actually the old football phrase for 4th down; my mind whispered as the 'banger pulled his gun up to me 'Go for it'. I would always carry everything I usually do back in school and my classmates as well as teachers knew perfectly well what kind of a background I come from, how responsible and polite I always was and am and had no problem with it. Even the anti-gunners to this day tell me they respect me for my strongly expressed and practised beliefs. Just between you and I, they tend to feel safer around me, not threatened.

Just yesterday I went to "video" shooting range, where you can train various scenarios while shooting live ammo on kinda projection wall... I must say, that even I shoot at least decent, having no problems with draws, double taps and all that stuff - this was totaly different. No time on anything moving targets, multiple targets, innocent bystanders... If you have option for such a training go for it! It will open your eyes...! In the end I found myself shooting very agressively... :-D

being a sheepdog requires sharp mind brave heart and set of massive brass balls. Not everyone is lucky to be equipped like that. I am former weekend soldier from Eastern Europe. raised to fight from childhood. Since I grew up without a father I spent most of my summers in camps set by military and paramilitary organisations. Now I am about to move to USA. My sister lives there. I think first thing I am going to buy when I come is something like Glock 19 and carry it everywhere, I mean *everywhere* and that would be 99% to stop something like that from happening. I work in a federal gun free zone. I cannot carry at work because it is a federal crime to do so. It is also a place where an active shooter event is more likely to occur than most places, a high school. When out and about on the weekends with my wife, I conceal carry, and I feel safe. But at work, I feel like the law prevents me from keeping myself, my coworkers, and innocent students from being safe. I have thought about it a bunch of times. I would never want to be in that situation while armed, and I dread the though of it being unarmed. As a law abiding citizen, I won't break the law. So my firearm does not come into the school with me. But that won't stop some nutcase from doing it. I would feel better if we had armed police on site. But school district police have a pair of handcuffs and a walkie talkie. We are fucked if an active shooter event ever takes place hear. Police are about 5 minutes away. 5 minutes is an eternity when the carnage is happening.

I know that 'active shooter' just refers to a person engaged in a shooting spree in public. I'd imagine that 'protocol' would dictate that you a) assess the situation, b) call it in over the radio, and then c) close to engage. I'd say that an 'active shooter protocol' is different from say a hostage situation protocol in that they are automatically cleared to engage with deadly force, rather than having to wait for authorisation. All conjecture.

there was a shooting at a mall near where i live today. more people were hurt from the stampede of fear away from the shooter then the shooter himself.

Yea, The things I carry almost everywhere and everytime are an OC pepperspray and a little fixedblade knife. Not so much penetration at distance as with a gun. But better than nothing. I agree with nutn' - a nonlethal tool and one for lethal defense is the best way to go...

EXCELLENT video, one of the best nutnfancy vids I've seen since I started watching a few months back. I totally agree. Heroism isn't heroism for its own sake; it's people trying to save other people's lives, who aren't afraid to engage someone who is intent on murdering as many people as possible. Very good. A pity I'm too young to carry guns, much less concealed ones; but when I can, I believe I will. Keep it real, Nuntfancy!

Does anyone know of any cases where the heroes used illegally carried weapons to stop shooters on killing rampages?

We had a case here in Sweden of this kind recently. A man named Per drove past a car standing on the highway, and stopped to check that everything was alright. When he approached the car he saw a man in the process of raping/killing an old woman. Per took a wrench from his car and hit the man in the head 2 times. Later at the trial of both of them, the rapist was given Suspended sentence while Per got 1 year in prison for assault. When I saw this I was really pissed of.

responding to bfelt - It's more complicated than you think. You get a call on the radio - shots fired, possible fatalities (god knows how many), in a cafeteria. You don't know if there are accomplices or not. No badges on the scene, you're the first responder, you're 2 miles away. Add lots of ADRENALINE. When you get there, you see two "civilians" that may similarly match description provided by radio exchanging fire from 20 feet away from each other. They're both wearing civilian clothing.

Something I read recently was about the Luby's Massacre in 1991. It actually spawned the modern "shall issue" ccw laws. So these things can work for gun owners; although, I wouldn't count on it.

Would you also advocate the training and learning of a physical skill like Krav Maga? It can be usefull for disarming a hostile and put the weapon in your hand. It also would help in hand to hand knife fighting.

I agree, you can't just do it willy nilly. My ERT training taught me that you always have to size up a situation first: Is it a rescue or a recovery? I think NFs exposure here may be indicitave of an emotional reaction to the Ft. Hood shooting. Nonetheless, he makes good points about free-fire zones not working. An ounce of prevention as they say. Sun Tzu was ordered by the Emporer to move his armies in a direction that would have destroyed them. He refused the edict and saved the kingdom.
