Only ever seen them for real once, and that at a considerable distance. When visiting the US Navy museum at Pensacola we drove through the US Navy base and air station there, they had several of the prototypes (yes, it was that long ago) parked on the ramp. No photography allowed, obviously, but they looked impressive. Learned later that they were parked there because the test program had been interrupted by some serious design flaws that had been found (and have since long been rectified).

It's one great feat of engineering. Those two engines pods together look as big as the main body. How do you fly one? You can start take-off as a normal fixed wing aircraft but land as a helicopter, they have totally different controls. Love to know how the flight controls transition works.
@JerryLaw3 жыл бұрын
they can’t point their engines 100% forward on the ground while their engines are running cause their props will hit the ground but I can’t see why they can tilt the engines at a angle for a some what normal take off

its rubbish... overpriced crap. its killed 86 people already. if one rotor stops working creating a vortex instability it will fall like a stone. it cost 110 billion to 'develop' and too expensive and fragile to use.
@Iahusha777Iahuah3 жыл бұрын
When they put higher power engine on it so it can still hover with a single engine failure then it will be what it was meant to be.
@G1NZOU3 жыл бұрын
They have joystick and then a thrust lever with a transition wheel on it to move the rotors to forward flight. Takes a bit of training but once you have it it's pretty intuitive. It had a lot of teething issues in development and a number of high profile crashes, but the capability of vertical landing with the speed and range of a winged aircraft makes it worthwhile. It'll be cool to see the next gen tiltrotors like the V-280 in service eventually.

@@daviejay8714 I would say that the Chinook probably has better weaponry aswell. 3 manned guns at doors compared to the one on the rear loading ramp on the Osprey. WHY does our Coastguard and RAF not have the Osprey??? it is a SUPERB versatile aircraft.
@sydneybarwick65383 жыл бұрын
Probably the £60 million unit cost and the fact that we have only just got the FAA and RAF the AW101 Merlin
@mojonojo33 жыл бұрын
you can buy 3 Merlin's for the same price - and arguably the Merlin is more versatile to the navy (anti submarine, rescue, and personnel transport) where as the osprey does one thing well long range carrier personal transport - great for getting marines 1000miles from a carrier - however shit for rescue or counter submarine warfare.
@cosplayshop3 жыл бұрын
@@mojonojo3 You probably did not heard of the latest version of Osprey CMV-22 the US navy had ordered since 2018, the CMV-22 is basically a modular design, it has already been ordered by the US Navy to perform similar role to the MH-60 Romeo (Which does SAR and anti-submarine patrol) but with heavier payload and extended range along with COD function Also, India wanted the CV-22 platform for AWACS on their own aircraft carrier instead of using E-2D. Basically the osprey has now been developed into multi-function platform. Osprey is now a lot more than just a utilities chopper.
@mojonojo33 жыл бұрын
@@cosplayshop but the UK already has lots of merlins, they work well and are cheap, why would they seek to replace them? plus the osprey don't fit on UK aircraft carriers. Also Royal Marines have very different roles from US marines, with no need of long range insertion capability.
@cosplayshop3 жыл бұрын
@@mojonojo3 That's a different point you raise than the one I reply , in that your point is CV-22 cannot perform SAR and Anti-Submarine functions. I never said Royal Marine should replace their Merlin with Osprey, I merely saying V-22 can do what you said that they cannot do. And finally, IIRC, osprey did fit on a QE Class carrier, I think the QE are certified to operate V-22 on their deck, and CV-22 do fit LHD deployment (hence it was on USS America and Japanese are buying them for their 25,000 tons chopper carrier) It will fit on a 60,000 ton full size aircraft carrier.
