When I started my journey and was drowning in clutter, I had a backroom I put all my stuff in I was not ready to deal with. So I could clear out the rest of my house. When my entire house was clean and decluttered, I would take out one bag/box/pile at a time and sit in the living room relaxed and don't get so overwhelmed by the amount I had to declutter.

I would never be able to get rid of a box of clothes without looking in it! And I am no longer cluttered. I’m a little messy, but it’s taken me years to get rid of stuff! So I’m in that boat with you! I am helping several friends declutter using the little by little method. Obvious trash is our first attack. If it is debatable skip it. You are doing GREAT!!

New team member here. So inspired by you and your determination. I have anxiety too. I will speak with my case manager this afternoon regarding clearing away some of my clutter. I can't manage it alone because of my health but my case manager might be able to find someone who can help. I hadn't really thought I could tackle my clutter problems but you have inspired me. Thanks so much.

If you have large totes or good-sized backpacks you no longer need, maybe you have a food pantry or similar in your area? I volunterr at a food pantry and we can always use lager bags to provide to clients who pick up food but don't have bags to carry groceries home.

Mira, when I was younger I wasn’t much of a housekeeper. Now, I’m very tidy. I had so many clothes and shoes it was crazy! I think you might have me beat in that department though 😂. I hung onto my things because I had paid a lot of money for most of my stuff. After I retired, 10 years ago, I continued to keep the clothes and shoes. I moved into a beautiful old apartment. It was built in the late 1800’s. Beautiful oak doors, trim, a beautiful fireplace with glazed brick and all oak mantel piece. It’s 900 square feet! However, it only has about 30 square feet of closet space!! Soooo, I had to really cut back on my clothes and shoes. I packed up almost all of my work wardrobe and shoes. I donated my things to a local women’s shelter. I felt so liberated from all of those clothes!! I still have far too many clothes. I am going to go through them again a purge some more of them. There are so many women who might benefit from having “new” clothes to look for work or just to have some more options. Like you, a lot of my clothes and shoes still had tags on them. I’m so proud of you for letting so much go! I love watching your videos! It helps people who are overwhelmed to realize they don’t have to do all of the work in one or two days or weeks or months. They can follow your lead and declutter at their own pace! You are such an inspiration to so many people. Keep plugging away and sharing your videos so that others might see how they can follow your journey ❤❤❤

I find it is always easier for me to get rid of stuff I don't need if it is going to a home... just throwing it in the trash makes me "feel" for the item and then I want to keep it just to make it feel wanted

I was a homecare physical therapist and I was in many homes that had all kinds of issues but I know I don’t know what is going on with people. I focused on why I was there to help the person. No judgement. Once we knew each other we could attack the issues in front of us. Their goals were not the same as mine . Mutual respect. Not enough of that going on!!

I watched a hoarder show once and they were very polite to the 2 people who lived there but they tested them..if a fire starts you only have a minute or so to get out of your house before the smoke gets you..they timed the 2 people to see if they could climb over their hoard and get out in a minute..then they blindfolded them because the smoke from a fire makes a room very dark..the people would of died in the smoke before the fire even got to them..the testers were very kind to the people and the people realised they were in jeopardy and then more willing to clean out some if their possessions.

I want to say you have motivated me to start cleaning again. I don't have a lot of clutter or clothing, but laundry piles up and can sit for weeks. I had hired a house keeper but as you say the anxiety wasn't worth it, having her in the house, touching my stuff, lol. Anyway, I decided to try doing one goal at a time. I started with clearing the dining room table and the kitchen counters, then the bathroom and gave it a good scrub down. Then did the half bath, then swept up all the dog hair in the hall and kitchen. This took place over several days. It feels good, and my next goal is to vacuum the office and the living room. My husband has had cancer for several years, and my son was diagnosed last fall (he is an adult and lives in another state). I am just now seeing that depression and anxiety was the trigger for my lack of cleaning. You have been a terrific motivator! If Mira can do it, so can I! (Sorry to make this about me but you have helped me so much)

You have my sympathy. There’s absolutely times when it feels like people are not empathetic and it’s really recognizable compared to people who are approaching your situation with compassion. I try to remind myself that the way they act is about them and the way I react to them is about me. I realized that assuming I understand other people’s motivations and unspoken feelings was a coping mechanism from growing up with abusive parents. It’s taken me years to realize that heightened sense of other people’s intentions was false. I can’t read minds. I was telling myself stories based on past abuse to try to anticipate situations that might be scary or painful. Now unless someone verbally expresses a feeling, I try not to ascribe anything to what I might be perceiving from the way they’re speaking to me. It puts the burden on other people to be clear about their feelings and intentions and it saves me a lot of reactionary stress and anxiety. Right now it’s taking me a conscious effort to let those stories go, but I am hoping in the future it will be more automatic.

Oh Mirna I felt so bad for you being judged so harshly. I had to fight from being hospitalized for depression after my divorce. My husband left me for a 20 year younger woman and I couldn't compete with THAT. TWO years of deep dark doo-doo therapy to get past that. I missed a month of work and no one understood, I could NOT function at all and I mean at all. Nothing. Depression is like falling into a deep hole and you're trying to claw your way up with your finger nails.😮 Thank you for your honesty and truth, I understand more than you will ever know. 🤔 Shaming does make you feel unsafe, so true, so true. ❤

Every word you said resonated deeply with me. No one has been in my home for over 2 yrs for the same reasons you stated. I know what I need to do. I know what I should do. I know how to do what I need to do. I know it would make me feel better to do what I need to do. Why won't I just do it? And no one who knows me would ever think this is how I live. Thankfully. I so enjoy your videos. But it is hearing what you say that makes me feel like I'm not a complete loser.

Those brakes really can set in. It's not an easy thing to overcome. Many days I'm right there with you, brakes on. I just tell myself to do ONE small thing. Often, once I start moving, I reflect and see how I feel... I almost always feel better about myself and the fact I did one thing to overcome those brakes. That leads to more movement. It takes a practiced mindset to talk to yourself about movement. Not tasks or the entire job, just one simple movement in one direction. Lots of love.

My husband's kids (adults) aren't allowed over because I'm too embarrassed for them to see how we live. I want nothing more than to have a clean house and invite them over for dinner, but I don't know if I'll ever get there. We can keep trying, though!

I use a gardening stool that can be flipped to be a stool and has “saddle bags” I can put my scissors, tape, marker in) or it can be turned over to be a kneeler with (the upside down legs as side rails so I can get up) I got it for the yard, but it has been a godsend for getting down and dirty decluttering. Because of back injury and balance problems, the big thing for me is to get someone to carry the donation boxes and bags to my car so I can drop them off. The guys on receiving dock at charities will unload for me. Sometimes I bring them a bag of candy bars as a thank you. 👍 Re: sorting papers I retired from teaching 3 years ago and have no idea why I thought I needed to keep boxes of lesson plans, junk papers, and (now out of date) books. I finally faced them recently and am so glad to get them out of the house. It was cathartic to say to myself that I released that time of my life and am moving on to my new life.

a few of us in my library knitting group have challenged each other to wear every single thing we own to knitting. every week, we show up in something we haven't worn for years in some instances. it's been really fun. we've added jewelry, shoes, hand bags, craft bags... some of us have lots, some have less, but we're making sure that if we own it, we're using it and not forgetting about it at the bottom of a drawer or back of a closet. one lady showed up in a sweater she had knit over 25 years ago, and it still looks fabulous.

As a retired RN, I'm so sorry she made you feel that way. Nurses are just people and some are better then others in their bedside manner and communication skills. Nurses that have been through depression, anxiety or any mental health, or physical health issue, can usually empathize. Most people don't really understand until they have been through it themselves. Don't let the naysayers pull you down. Keep going Mira, clutter has absolutely nothing to do with a person's kind heart. This RN is proud of you and thinks you are a wonderful kind hearted person.

Glad to hear that someone is helping you with doing your laundry. 😊 When you get a box empty, break it down right away, being flat takes so much less space. Things donated to a church or salvation army are often used to help others in need...just might give you a better reason to donate. I wonder what that nurse would say now? You decluttered a lot of your house. People in certain jobs are obligated to make sure, in case of an emergency, that there is easy access to rooms used on a daily basis. Those people are NOT judging you, they are explaining to you what NEEDS to happen to make your home SAFE! That's how you need to look at your home...should something happen, can an emergency personal get to you easily. You've done such a wonderful job decluttering, and you seem to be keeping everything clear that you've already cleaned. You just keep doing what you're doing,❤ and soon you'll have the main rooms you live in done! 😊🎉❤

Yes. When others come in and judge what has occurred due to illness it makes it VERY DIFFICULT to go forward at all. If instead they asked, "can i help you go through any of this, THAT would be more helpful and might bypass some of the anxiety. I know that that mountain in the living room felt like going backwards and replaced that weight. Im glad you fought through that to the return of cleared space again instead of staying in the dark place. Sometimes motivation is extra Helpful. Having a place for others to get use from our no longer neededs is freeing, isn't it!

I think a person coming in asking "have you considered throwing stuff away" may sometimes work their way up to asking "can I help?" I love decluttering, especially other peoples' stuff (less emotional attachment), but I can't very well walk into am apartment for the first time, look around and say "oh, may I declutter this". Asking whether the owner has considered decluttering might be a way to ask whether they might like help.

Great job Mira! Other commenters are correct, people may only see things from their own point of view. The firefighters only thing you are safe if you have easy access to all doors and windows, the home health aid only thinks you are safe if your environment is dust free and offers no hiding place for insects and spores, you feel you are safe if you have the things you love around you. As humans, we need to bridge those gaps and all share each other’s perspectives.

For me the time saver and ease of “just get rid of the whole box” would soon be overcome with thoughts of “what was in there. Did I trash something important?” You should always honor your style, your need to do it your way…and keep those crafty times. Creativity is the song in your soul which keeps you singing. 😊

That sense of safety is ESSENTIAL. Otherwise the anxiety would build to a point where you would quit, just to get rid of the distress. You're doing great. A suggestion for clothes, maybe look at it from the perspective of how many outfits can I wear. Maybe keep one outfit per day? Then donate to a women's shelter, helping others that are in need might help make it easier to let go. As there is a greater purpose for the clothes. Best wishes, whatever works for you.

I don't know if it's workable for you, but maybe when the clothes come back from being laundered, you could let yourself choose two or three items per pile of your very favorites, and see how that goes as far as having enough room in your closet when done. Of course it depends on the size of the piles you will be sorting through, too. Ultimately, it will be up to you, how you do it, and that's how it should be.

Have you ever considered wearing gloves to sort through textures you don't like? I'm Autistic and when I sort through old paper I wear gloves because the feeling of construction paper makes my skin crawl. It helps lessen the sensory overload.

Here’s what worked for me in my overstuffed closet. 3 boxes, keep, no keep and maybe. I assure you my ‘maybe’ box filled up fast. I put away the definite yes, got rid of the no’s and resorted the maybe box. Eventually my yes store spot was full and then the maybe’s became no’s since I had already rejected definite yeses for this a few times. It was slow, painful and difficult but overall it worked for me…

"knowing what the problem is isn't the problem" is going to be my new saying. I have a loved one with a substance abuse issue and I have found my issues aren't that far away from his and that my struggle is just as hard. I love the shirt Bonnie made for you and the fact that she came over on her birthday to give it to you. I found you both at the same time and I am so glad I did. I feel like I am part of team Peeling Away now. I also had anxiety whenever we needed someone to come over the house to fix something. I would do a speed declutter just to move things and make it look presentable. It is such an awful feeling. I am so happy you found a good handy man that lets you be you. As always, thank you for sharing Mira!

I get it when you spoke about the home health nurse, especially when immediately being discharged from the hospital. It is the home health nurse 's responsibility to make sure the patient/client to navigate safely through their home. It isn't intended to be judgemental but safety.

Mira, youre a writer! I wonder if I came across you back in the day online? Please remember those who say insensitive things are often without the gift of words and communication. I used to be able to write, but what comes out my mouth isn't nearly as pretty. Someone mentioned the whole taking pictures of items, and I personally have found this very helpful. I take photos of treasured items before I let them go. It has even evolved into me taking pictures of items when I'm SHOPPING! Let me tell you it made a world of difference in my antique and second hand shopping! I really enjoy going back and looking at all the stuff that I didn't bring home! ❤ PS absolutely LOVE your QUOTES! Definitely do something with those!

Dearest Mira, I want to say I am absolutely proud of you. 🎉 Another thing I want to say is that it may be helpful to you to vertically organize and hang your clothes instead of boxes and shelves with horizontal piles on top of each other. I find the horizontal way causes a lot of shifting and refolding after digging for what you're looking for. It also causes avalanches and mountains of things piled on top of each other. I suggest the clothing you sort through or keep to be hung up on hangers on clothing rods. That way, they are easily seen and pushed aside a few inches without falling. You can temporarily RENT clothing valet bars while you scale down and declutter. In case I'm not making myself clear, I'm talking about the rolling bar racks that are used in stores that hold clothing. I'm looking forward to your next video. Be blessed.

The home health aid might be a mandatory reporter. I’m sure her only concern is your safety. It is hard to manage a gurney in tight spaces should the need arise.

She did mention that, actually. But it wasn't so much what she said as her tone when she said it. I'm okay with people expressing concern but she was condescending about it. Thanks for commenting. I recognize that home health aids need to do their job.

It is so true that it is all about how you say things and the tone of voice is SO important. I had an experience of requesting assistance and the person 's answer was NO but he did it in such a kind and respectful way that I left feeling good about the agency , feeling good about myself and feeling great about him personally. That was such an important life lesson for me that I became very aware as a healthcare professional, to watch my tone of voice and to take the time to say things in a caring manner.@@PeelingAwaytheClutter

And yet another brilliant insight... "Knowing what the problem is, is not the problem." And I think setting smaller goals is the way to go. And having an actual checklist that can physically checked off can also be motivating. Even if the progress isn't visible, the checkmarks are. It will be exciting to see what you come up with in the closet redesign. Cheers!

Something i’ve found helpful which you could contemplate for when you get to it is using the container method. Your closet, dresser etc is the container and i always think i can only keep what fits inside that space. Sadly, the closet is not the tardis!!! (It doesn’t get bigger when things go inside it!!!) so once you’ve washed it all be mindful that you can only keep what fits in that space.

You and the Inspector have given us another motivating video! Geez, I know all about the shame of even contemplating someone seeing the inside of my house. I put off replacing my stove for 2 years, because I didn’t want the delivery people to see how I live. Of course, every day of that 2 years I was telling myself that I’ll get this place cleaned up long enough for a new stove to be delivered. And of course, I always added, “I’ll spend the whole day cleaning Finally, 2 years later, I ordered the stove, and it was delivered into the chaotic disarray I call home. Anyway, in the past week, I finally sorted through all of the boxed stuff around my fireplace. 3 boxes of stuff are going to Goodwill. I just need to put the other things on empty shelves in the designated rooms. But, I lost focus and motivation. Hopefully, Mira’s video will inspire me to finish up. Then I just need to sweep and mop where the stuff was piled. Rambling on and on…. Ok, thank you for sharing with us your decluttering journey. Seeing your determination to keep working on your decluttering, knowing you’re pushing through emotions that I’m letting stop me, and watching you do it all with humor and grace, never fails to inspire me.

Cheers🎉Mira! You said many wonderfully true statements! Working for 10-15 minutes and taking a break can really keep us going for longer. It’s so helpful! And you are so right about judgement from outsiders not being helpful-I’ve often wanted to say “I know I’m depressed now that YOU told me-I had no clue!😆 “ I’ve learned so much in my adult years-how to actually be helpful without judgement is one of those things-and I wish everyone could learn this. Empathy is not as widespread/common a life skill as I thought in my younger years. You are making great progress Mira and I’m so proud of you! 🎉

I hope you're doing well and that you're feeling accomplished. You've made so much progress in such a short and turbulent time. As far as the "have you thought about throwing things away" questions, I've found that having a trash can in every place that trash ends up is handy. I have a two bedroom apartment with my two girlfriends, and we have 3 large trash cans and 5 small ones, plus a recycle bin. It's so much easier to tackle trash a little bit at a time when it's already bagged and you've just got to consolidate and bring it out. Also I think you've got the right idea about the clothing. You've got so much that you love that is hiding away, and you've got to expose it to make decisions, and you're making better informed decisions on them when you look at all of it together. I think once you have the clothes all clean and sorted into categories, you'll be able to really make final decisions and pare down the collection into just enough that you've got space for. Keep on keeping on, you're doing a great job, this is such a HUGE project and you're truly making progress as fast as you can.

Awesome job Mira! I wish I lived near you I would help you out anytime. No judgement here, that's for sure!!!! Now that the clothes are out of the boxes, does that make you feel better. You can get rid of the boxes now that you don't need them. Funny fact: I'm doing laundry while watching your video and my washer sounds like it wants to run away, hahahah! The home health person may not have been showing judgement, maybe just concern for your safety and not wanting you to fall. I had both total knee replacements and had home rehab, she was the sweetest girl. But, when she came to see me I did notice her looking around. I think they are trained. I worked in the home residential field for 12 years and we were mandated reporters of abuse, neglect or danger, etc. I don't know in your case, you may be right. Just letting you know there are good people out there willing to help! Keep up the awesome work Mira!!!🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤
