We're closing down our off-grid cabin for the winter! Since we won’t be able to access it for the next few months, it's time to get everything prepped and ready for a long, dark, and cold winter. From securing the water supply to protecting the cabin from harsh weather and wildlife, we'll walk you through the steps we take to make sure it's in good shape when we return in a few weeks or months. I was off grid many times and I had solar yard lights along the outhouse path , very helpful . Also , you can get good solar motion sensitive spotlights so that if there's anything moving outside and back past your outhouse , you can see it . That cabin is a treasure , just love the kitchen !! ❤

I would consider taking more of the string lights and using them to make some kind of design over the stovetop. If the design was somewhat dense, it would give you so much more light to work by and could be really pretty. Even just a grid of lights would be useful.

You could put perches to hang your bed textiles and blankets from. Our cabin had old spits hanging from the ceiling where they used to hang bread dry on (yes, they made their own knäckebröd!) and we just used those. Very handy for preventing mold and moisture build up.

A newbie fan from Saskatchewan, Canada. It is cold here too in the open prairies. It gets dark but not like you. Your ability to turn it into something amazing thru your storytelling, videography and still photos is beyond talented. And your love for your dog is infectious. My husband’s aunt also has a cabin without electricity or fancy amenities. For light, she uses gasoline/ oil lamps! Some handheld, 2 are wall mounted and run from the propane tank.

Hi C...Us to are getting ready, in the very northern tundras of Minnesota, are doing the same thing. Shutting down our lake cabins, securing our Lake lots, putting all of our outdoor summer toys (boats &RV's) & furniture into storage, airing out my carpets and blankets, getting wood cut and in the shed, hauling out winter clothes and gear, snowmobiles and shovels...blah blah blah..BATTENING DOWN THE HATCHES is what we call it here.
