Cloudy Night Sky - Quilt Piecing Thread Selection

I am working on Cloudy Night Sky, a quilt I designed that I hope to have complete in time to submit for consideration to QuiltCon 2024. Because it is meant to be a show quilt, I am taking my time and carefully considering each step of the process. In this video, I will be working to select the thread I will use to piece the Kona Cotton Nightfall (deep navy) to Snow (off white). I am auditioning matching 50wt Aurifil Thread in 2785 (very dark navy), 2311 (muslin), and 2600 (dove).

What weight thread are you using? Would a 60 or 80 weight thread make a difference? I hope your quilt makes it to QuiltCon 2024.

I piece with 50wt Aurifil cotton thread, as I have a big supply of that to work with. I'm working on the quilting now; we'll see if I can get it done in time to submit for consideration!

I would use both colors. For example, if the white is on the bottom, the bobbin is white and the top thread is navy to match the navy. I always two color thread on high contrast combos

At the end of the video, I mention that I tried that as well. For this particular quilt and my sewing machine settings, the resulting seam looked more like the all white thread seam, so for me, it wasn't a good choice here. But that's why I absolutely encourage everyone to try things out and test out their machine settings and thread options. Knowing what works best with your setup is so empowering!
