Dreyfus’s change from sane to insane was performed brilliantly 👏
@PointyTailofSatan4 жыл бұрын
FYI: when the first PP with Dreyfus movie was written, the Dreyfus character was very plain. It was Lom himself who developed the Dreyfus character into what it is here. Blake thought Lom's characterization was amazing, and basically let Lom free wheel the character, to the point of changing the script to conform to Lom, instead of the actor following the script. Peter Sellers was treated the same way. So Lom's comic genius is really epic, and Blake equally a genius for letting them have their ways.

It's interesting how, prior to this, from what I've heard, Herbert Lom wasn't primarily a comedic actor, and took on more serious roles. You'd never guess, based on his portrayal of Dreyfus!

Always the tactful inspector -"Yes, we made quite a few changes, since you went crazy." This is from The Pink Panther Strikes Again, the funniest, in my opinion, of the entire series, and one reason is that Herbert Lom is just as funny as Sellers is in this one. Clouseau has finally driven him over the edge , and he's a total lune- a madman, an evil genius, complete with a castle and pipe organ, and a kidnapped scientist who he forces to make a doomsday ray for him, so that he can threaten the world with it if nobody gives him Clouseau so he can exact his revenge. That whole movie is just hilarious.

Watching this 6-minute clip made me laugh longer and harder than any "comedy" I've seen in at least the last 10 years. As good as Sellers is, Lom matches him, and stealing a scene from a pro like Sellers is an accomplishment, especially for an actor like Lom who was not, shall we say, known for his comedy chops. The two of them together work like a well-oiled machine, and they make it look so easy. Their on-screen chemistry is even more impressive when you realize that he and Sellers apparently didn't get along all too well (in several interviews he said Sellers w,as "a sick man", and he didn't mean physically). Nevertheless, they were just a joy to watch.

In all fairness, Lom was right...Sellers was *not* psychologically healthy. Those who knew Sellers well in his private life -- that is, insofar as anyone was ever really able to know him -- have said that the one character which came the closest to representing his true personality was Chance AKA Chauncey Gardiner from the 1979 film "Being There". According to them, Sellers didn't really seem to know who he was unless he was playing a character and he tended to change his personality to suit whoever he was interacting with. Being around someone like that would be...difficult because you'd never really feel certain who you were interacting with and how much you could trust that what you were seeing was genuine.

The best part of Clouseau is that he genuinely never understands how he causes all the mayhem around him. He leaves this scene convinced that Dreyfus just had some bad luck and is just insane, having no idea how he's driven the man crazy over the years. Dreyfus is one step away from "realizing" that it's the plot that protects Clouseau - nothing else makes sense. He tries to explain how dangerous Clouseau is to his henchman, who can't seem to understand that it isn't because Clouseau is so skilled and effect. Rather, "he's the worst". He's the human equivalent of a cursed black cat, bringing disaster to anyone near him but always someone surviving it himself.
