I'd once been in love..when I was 15, I was with a girl for a year. Then I moved to a city to study my last two years of high school. I dedicated to better myself in hostel over there, get good in studies, lose the extra fat, but the girl moved on two months after I'd left. I know I wasn't available because I was in hostel, but I was ready to be in love with my thoughts of her if not her physically being there for me but she wasn't. She came like a breeze and forever shook me..it's been 3 years now, I don't think of her anymore because it still makes be skip a beat. I talked to her a few months back and it's like I never even knew her. So yeah, being in love is such a big question mark. It's like you need to be in love but you shouldn't. I know, find the right one, right, but the right one is right only until they are not. I think I've turned into a hardened cynic in life. I was beautiful and hopeful once. This movie shaped my cynicism.

I think this movie is an absolute work of art because it shows the true reality of life: not all love stories have happy endings. Feeling heartbreak, pain, and loss is the only way we will learn to appreciate and love what we truly have. I hated this movie until I recently had to part with a friend whom I was in a complicated relationship with. I then realized that I hated this movie because it was real and revealed my truest fears of what I didn't want to happen. I wanted a happy ending, but I had to learn that not all great stories have the happiest endings.

This movie actually changed me. I first watched this when my boyfriend and I just started out dating(2012), and after I saw this movie, I made it a vow not to give up on our relationship no matter how hard it gets. This was really an eye-opener. Fast forward to 8 years, and we're still as strong as ever. I realized that love is a choice and there should be a mutual commitment to make the relationship work despite the obstacles and the threat of distance. Love conquers all! PS: The ending sequence is a mood setter. I don't watch it when I don't want to feel lonely or sad the whole day. Haha

Three lives. Distance separated Takaki and Akari while their feelings for each other separated Kanae from Takaki. Love was sacrificed for love. Time passes by normally as it would without doing any significant favour for anyone. Denied by love, the three try to live but only to survive life. Situation changed with the passing years. At the end, convinced of her past,Akari reaches out to life. The girl who was lost for a long time finally accepts her fate and lives her life. She is now engaged. Kanae continues to love Takaki despite knowing he will never love her .Her faith is impeccable. Takaki unlike Akari is unable to accept the reality , he fails to reach out to life,he sits back confused and frustrated . However he still hopes that someday His and Akari's last childhood wish 'To watch the cherry blossoms fall at the speed of five cm per second in spring' will perhaps someday come true. Takhaki got scared because of the distance that grown between them. He thinks that he cant cope up with the long distance love affair and he doesnt want to put akari in grief so he decided not to reply to her even though he himself keep writting those messages. In other words he tried to let go of akari. Akari still love him she said it in her last e-mail, but since Takhaki didnt reply, akari thinks that he didnt love him anymore so she moves on and she'll be married in a month. Takhaki nevertheless, cant let go of his feeling for akari. His life was so meaningless the he decided to quit his job and wander aroud as if his looking for something but the thoughts of Akari filled his mind until he mindlessly trudge back to the old place where they both watched the cherry blossoms when they were still kids hoping he can find Akari there. Akari on the other hand went in that old place because she was reminded of Takhaki when she found the undeliverd letter she wrote for him 3 years ago. They passby each other along the way near the railway. Akari has the feeling that the man he passby was Takhaki so she stop for a moment and slightly turn her back but the ongojng train blocked her view. She never expect to find Takhaki there beacause she believe that Takhaki did'nt love her, so she banished the idea and keep on walking. Takhaki feel the same way when he walked on by Akari but contrary to Her, he hope to find her there thats why he said" when she turns back....."so he keep standing there waiting for the train to go by and when he can't find Akari on the other side of the road, all the feeling that he bottle up for so long intensify into a deepest regret thats whay he ask for another chance ."One more time one more chance."

But I think you interpreted that email part wrongly.. The last email was not sent to Tono by Akari.. it was sent to him by his girlfriend whom he has been dating for three years.. Yes.. you are right that Tono was afraid of long distance relationship ..so he did not want Akari to wait for him .. They never exchanged even a single email since Tono used to delete the messages he wrote in particular to noone.. That's why he decided to break up with his 3 year girlfriend (since he was still stuck in the past hoping for a happy ending with Akari) by not making contact with her since we saw in the movie that he did not reply to his girlfriend's messages who was desperately in love with him.. So..basically we can say Tono did not want Akari to wait for him but he himself was waiting for her desperately.. In manga.. it was shown that when Tono and Akari were in that crossway again later in their adulthood.. Tono gets a glimpse of the engagement ring of Akari..but still with a hope he waits for the train to cross but to his disappointment he does not found Akari standing there.. Akari was already engaged at that time..but she had to come to revive her old memories..finally deciding to not to come back ever again..but Tono was there yes to revive his old memories but also with a hope of getting back together with Akari..but after seeing A Karl's wedding band he smiles that means he accepted the fact that Akari has moved on and he needs to too.. And finally he also let go of his job and girlfriend and finally decides to move on with his life with an aim of grasping another thing out of his reach which was yet to be known to him.. Yes..the story is sad..but I won't say this is not a happy ending..this is indeed a happy ending.. It's just our idealism of happy ending is different than reality..we always expect the leads to get back together..but that does not happen in reality if fate doesn't want to.. But..what can we do when life and fate hold hands and get the last laugh..noone can deny their decisions and we have to play along with them and fight for our survival..in our own lives.. Life doesn't revolve around us..Sometimes..we don't get what we want and what we get we don't like that and we always want to get what we can never get.. So..accept fate and move on.. That's the happiest ending we can expect from our lives..

"One morning,i came to a realization that i have already lost all the beautiful things in the world. So i quitted the company." "Next year lets go see the sakura blossoms together,we both said it without an ounce of doubt in our hearts." I think all these moments, along with the symbolization of the space & constellations, r refering to the loss of youth & attachment to the world, rather than a mere lost love. For me, the feelings Takaki kept on holding to are not exactly the romantic love for Akari but those precious emotions you could only experience as a child. Rather than a real life love interest, Akari sort of became a symbol of his youth, sth he can never see or touch again. In the third part of the story, there is no mention of Akari s name although we get to see her & hear her again. It made the viewer realize that Akari is indeed a real person, a young lady who is planning to get married soon. But for Takaki, she is now a distant dream of his, & someone who only lives in this dream. Akari s voice joined in in narrating the dream, showing us a hint that maybe Takaki is also the same sort of dream or memory for her now. There is no mention of her name by Takaki, probably indicating that she is in deep parts of his consciousness, someone detached from all realities of his life. And he longs for that dream more than anything, bcuz he wants to escape from the reality where he could not find any purpose, & his life which has lost all its possibilities & beautiful aspects, drifting away & away from them at a rate of 5 cm per second.

I only just watched this movie, but there's one point that stands out to me about the relationship between the second and the third part. Takaki stopped texting her. They way he sends messages to no one, its almost as if it was out of the blue. He severed the connection himself, and Akari probably interpreted that as him moving on or forgetting about her. So its easier for her to accept moving on herself. Takaki is the one who suffers because he never really wanted to cut himself off from her, which is why she seems to have moved on far past him.

I feel like the beginning of the first episode really showcases the emotions of unequivocal joy and renewed youth that one feels when experiencing the blossoming of a relationship in a simplistic yet heartfelt way through having scenes emphasize the memories that the two main characters were experiencing together, such as when it was only the two of them in the library and hallway. This further showing how they were were immensely close through the feeling of isolation yet didn’t feel the pitiful emotion of loneliness because they had each other. Furthermore, as the episode trails on you can see a clear foreshadowing of the emotional distance that the two main characters will have to endure, through the overall color scheme which transitioned from a bright, pastel scenery to a gloomy and neutral tone. In addition, notice that whenever they said their farewell to each other, the anime literally shows the train the boy is on rolling away from the girl, always reminding the audience of how far apart they are to which their desired fate isn’t in their favor. Now, on the second episode it displays another type of distance that differs from the previous one, by comparing a physical distance with metaphorical distance by the boy casting a barrier over himself, not allowing the girl who has a crush on him come any closer than necessary which in return doesn’t build a strong bond compared to his childhood sweetheart. Therefore, this makes him vulnerable to no other possibilities in the department of love. In part, the message is how he sacrificed current opportunities for the past with hope fueling the possibility that someday they will reunite again. In addition this segment really does emphasize the uncertainty of the future and the boundless opportunities that lie within it, like when the girl with the crush on the boy flung the paper airplane into the endless sky. Lastly, the final episode really represents the harsh truth of reality. It shows how we aren’t bigger than life but rather how minuscule we are in the scope of life, where it shows human nature of having devotion to someone or something but eventually the enormity of life will overtake it, just how it did to the characters’ childhood love. It also shows how people cope with the same scenario in a multitude of ways and how the actual events in one’s life yet feelings will never really fade. In all, this series quite an accurate and realistic portrayal of human nature and how the people that were in or currently in our lives affect the way of living.

I realized how life truly is at the age of 14... It hurts like hell, but it's essential for a person's growth... Only certain experiences can change your perspective from living inside a bubble to facing the harsh reality that life is and learning to deal with it... I watched this film a couple of years ago when I was still struggling with a long distance story that was holding me back, I couldn't help but cry watching it back then. Now, almost 31 years old and having left that story behind, I'm re-watching this masterpiece with new eyes, no tears but still able to appreciate the beauty of a well portrayed life lesson. I think it's also the first time I notice the sadness of the girl he's been dating for the last three years, to whom he refers as "the girl" (no name). Perhaps every time you watch this film you relate more to one character than the other. Thank you for the review! Very well explained.

Interesting take on one of my favourite anime movies of all time! When I watched it I felt a lot of emotions for this anime but I couldn't really express it other than "I really like this film!". I think you've articulated a lot of the feelings I've had about this movie and it really has helped me become even more appreciative of Shinkai's work. It's absolutely amazing the depth and the story that is embedded into what is at first glance seen to nothing but a children's animation. Keep up the great work!

This movie is absolutely beautiful, it represents life in a perspective we don't expect to see. Life is a battle whether in relationships or anything by itself... Most movies portray everything is possible through effort, while that may be true it's not always the case. Sometimes like, for the characters in this movie, no effort can change their path, his efforts will always be in a vein as long as she has moved on. Sometimes it's better to move forward and believe that there's something better waiting for you ahead in life.

It’s hard to accept but sometimes the saying “Out of sight, out of heart” is true and it’s painful not to see the person you have loved deeply because of Life. I lost almost all the people I have truly loved and now I am only living based on their memories yet I still do appreciate what I have, everything in its own way is a bless only when you try to find your deep self- happiness

5 centimeters per second is definitely my favorite Makoto Shinkai film. I love that the ending is so realistic and I somewhat relate to Takaki’s character. I too couldn’t move on from my first love for more than a decade, (we also grew apart due to distance. Before then we’d promised to marry each other when we got older. It’s funny now when I think about it) but later when I realized they had moved on and were happy with someone else I simply gave up and hoped for their long happiness. Maybe that’s why every time I watch it my heart aches and I cry a lot, but regardless it’s still breathtakingly beautiful and poetic. I will never tire of this movie.

i was so sad for the guy.. like shit my girl did him dirty. but what i got from this movie is that there are certain circumstances that even true love cannot beat. and that eventually we suffer and cry and then move on. But there is as ways that feeling inside of us. Now if u just think about it u move on and when u see each other again.. what now? how are u suppose to act? its really hard to think about and a painful experience. because we can find many ways to justify each of our views on our situation. The one that doesnt move on will feel betrayed and its rightfully so... because he doesnt see what the other person is doing he just sees that his been holding on for so long going through so much just for this moment. and bang she has somebody else in your place... its really rough..

I know I’m super late but I just watched this movie on Netflix. Seeing this video breaking down the relationship between these two really resonates with me. I once met someone that became my best friend and I ended up falling in love with her. Ultimately things didn’t work out and 8 years later she is no longer in my life. She moved on with her life with a new relationship but even till this day I missed what we used to have. I moved on but there’s still feelings there for her I can never get rid of. Like Takaki and Akari I know we wasn’t meant to be and sometimes people served their purpose and aren’t meant to be in your life. It’s sad but that’s how life is and you just have to move forward. It’s like that saying “Right Person, Wrong Time” We’ll never see each other again but I wish her all the happiness.

I owe you one Cloudy TV. I both watched the movie AND read the manga, but I still couldn’t put any of that together. I persisted in viewing the story as a singular story about Akari and Takaki. I guess I have a very idealistic view of love and life and people and potential, so those kinds of themes were hard for me to accept. I’ll move to listen to them though. Idealism needs to constantly be filled in with contrasting and circumstantial information, or else it’s just ignorance. Well done
