One of my favorite moments of this season is when it’s shown that ally didn’t vote for Hillary. Her reaction to trump winning makes so much sense because she essentially blames herself (people with her mindset) for what happened. That’s the only real part of the whole political side of the show that I liked. It really did restart all of her fears because it was coming from a place of shame and self doubt in her own mentality.

I didn't love this season, but the way panic attacks were represented was so beautiful and gripping, Sarah Paulson did a great job (in my opinion). Also all the small plot twists in this season were soooooo entertaining, and the big plot twists were even better.

I feel like this season gets so much hate for the political stuff, but the season isn’t about the politics itself, but about how the fear and uncertainty of America’s future led to the fanatical cult behavior. Yeah, political stuff naturally pops up, but that isn’t the point. I mean the main character is shown to have several phobias in addition to political fears and those fears are used to manipulate her into the cult and her overcoming those fears is what eventually frees her from the fanaticism everyone is involved with.

What I appreciated the most about this season is that the storytelling was simple for the most part, yet so entertaining. Ally’s character near the end had developed a HUGE arc. With the way “Delicate” dragged out Anna’s visions, you would think Ally would be terrorized by clowns and phobias for nine episodes. Instead she turns into an antihero, conquering her phobias and the cult, and I was rooting for her the whole time !

This season really helped me process the 2016 election. It made me realize how powerful of a tool fear is and if you can tap into that, you can get people to do almost anything including compromising their moral code.

It's so funny that you have plenty of space behind you but you refuse to use it and instead you crumped everything together haha As a Non‐northamerican it's a really difficult season to rewatch because it reflects the political moments from that era, which is foreigner to any person who isn't living there. To me the highlight of cult is Leslie Grossman. Definitely one of the best additions to AHS because, as you mentioned Angela Bassett is always over the top with high energy and I think that Leslie is as over the top as her

cult i would say is more unique than roanoke lmao the amount of found footage tropes and reused scares that they’ve done before. even plot wise it’s not unique. cult on the other hand offers real life phobias and dives deep into the human mind. it talks about gender roles, race relations, fake (white) feminism and on top of that, cults throughout time and how easy it is to fall into one. AHS had never touched on anything like that whereas Roanoke is just another haunted space with a bunch of ghosts trying to harm main characters with a found footage twist(still enjoyable but i wouldn’t call it the most unique in a competition with cult).

I *really* liked Cult but 200% had problems with how they kind of forced our political climate at the time into the story so hard. Cult could have been my favorite season ever had they focused it entirely on like, some kind of sex-crazed incel becoming a modern Jim Jones.

scream queens is supposed to be a satire on toxic, bigoted, sororities / teen detective shows and it delivers that in a perfect little package. it's scathing and wry and the characters are intentionally problematic for a reason. one dude isn't just a shallow, misogynistic, fatphobic, cry baby, he's a stupid frat bro who ends up getting people killed because he's so incredibly stupid. chanel for all her horrible traits is there to show you how commanding and delusional rich people can be when they get a taste of power. would love to see a recap if you can stomach lea michele :D

i unfortunately struggled to connect with cult a lot at first, i felt like it did a horrible job at introducing the characters; e.g. instead of getting to know Ally first and feeling as much sympathy as i would've otherwise, it's more like "here's this random woman you don't know, she's scared of everything so feel bad for her" it def got better towards the middle but the end (Kai's descent into fascism and madness ig) was also kinda rough to sit thru lol [[plus, i'm not american, so while i obviously heard lots abt it, the whole election stuff didn't really hit that close to home for me tbh]]

I love politics but i dont think ahs has ever handled politics well. It always is super clumsy, comes across as edgy centrism with surface level analysis. Im a literal political scientist, political discourse can be done exceptionally well in speculative fiction which at a stretch is what AHS is. I think early episodes of black mirror and some seasons of dr who had far better political elements.

I think he mentioned in an interview that he started struggling during Hotel because he was getting desensitized to all the gore. Kai was the breaking point, he just didn't want to keep playing dark characters. Then he played Dahmer because he liked the script and said he struggled leaving that behind as well. He seems to be doing better nowadays though. He's such a talented actor and I hope he finds better balance with his work.

After I re-watched this season in 2024, I was able to appreciate it more. This was Evan Peter’s climax performance in the AHS anthology. Watching this in 2017 was so uncomfortable. We didn’t know where the country was heading and the horrors relating to political supporters were very real.

Due to how performative the writing is in Ryan Murphy projects I would expect nothing less. Playing fanfiction with history, using real people as props and characters. Just overall, bad taste.
