Club 470 Notch Excursion, Conway Scenic Railroad, 10-14-17

As foliage season hits it’s pinnacle in the White Mountains, especially in Crawford Notch, Club 470 chartered the Notch Train for an excursion. Including a locomotive that brought me up there in the first place, ex-Boston and Maine #4266, which would lead the way to Fabyan Station with a powerful horn that turned heads wherever she went.
Also included are any encounters I had with the Valley Train, these segments are only a minute or two in length if you’re just here for the Notch Train.
Please keep in mind that this was my first train chase, so if it seems like it was done by an inexperienced camera man then that’s why, but regardless, enjoy!

The Merrimack Railfan, Yeah its an awesome locomotive. I've always liked 573 mostly because of her Nathan P5 because it reminds my New England Southern's GP39 2370.

Collin Sulloway next to 4266, I’ve been getting a soft spot for the Notch locomotives, especially 216, if I were to take the non-operating locomotives into account, then 501 is definitely my pick

I was wondering if Boston & Maine 4266 engine was available for the Conway Scenic RailRoad from North Conway to Crowfords via North Pole Express!!??

Scott Fraser this video shows one of the last Notch trains at the end of foliage season. Following this, the Notch train doesn’t run until June. They typically won’t run passenger trains up the Notch unless they are doing a special charter excursion, as far as the locomotives go, #4266 has been officially named as a backup locomotive for both the Valley and Notch train, it’s typically far more likely to be seen on the Valley Train as the Notch has both #216 and #252, then #1751 has been seen up the Notch as well, while the Valley train only has #1751. I am not as familiar with the North Pole Express but from the looks of it, the usual power is #7470 and #573, I do believe that #4266 took #7470’s place in her restoration but after this year, #7470 should be operational again. If you want to see #4266 active, a great time to see her is during Railfan’s Weekend or you could email CSRX ahead of time and ask, however, bear in mind that with #4266’s position as a backup engine, her usage is not always a guarantee.

Simply due to 216 and 1751 being mostly absent during the foliage season. 216 had her temporary leave of absence due to engine problems, if you look at 2018 Railfan Weekend footage, notice how she basically became an honorary steam locomotive. As for 1751, I believe flat spots on her wheels necessitated their replacement, which was done by the winter excursions, but it still kept her absent for the foliage runs. Typically 216 would have 1751 to rely on, but with both of their absences, 4266 was the only other option. They’re lucky 573 didn’t have mechanical issues that would’ve taken her out of service as they wouldn’t have a backup locomotive for her considering the two usual backups were out of service and already in use.

Thanks! I originally wanted to just get the bridge then pan over into Fabian Station, but I luckily could find an angle that allowed me to get the crossing in there too. I tried to get the same spot for its departure but I had to rush to set up as I needed to switch cameras, so I didn’t get the right placement that I had earlier

Queenie J unfortunately that is the case, from what I’ve heard, they don’t have the staff to power enough equipment as it’s all voluntary, I’ve heard special events will be held though, like this was the 20th I believe? So they’d be holding it every 5 or 10 years from what I hear.
