Club foot / Talipes equinovarus : Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

I had a clubfoot, or should I say, clubfeet. My mom tells me it took us 6 months to recover and we didn't need to go for frequent checkups after that. I had 2 surgeries as a baby, a week apart at the age of 2 and a half months. Then physical therapy until I was almost 7 months. After that I used special shoes with customized fitting until the age of 5. I however, never felt any different from any other kids. In fact I proactively trained basketball and was the top speedster in the team at the age of 12-14. The only downside is that even to this day, my feet are wider than they should be, my last, fifth toe - the smallest one, looks as if it was added to my foot, so I can't just choose any shoes I want, I have to search for a wider mold shoes. It was the best the doctors could do in my country in early 1990. Here I am 34 years later, with my 3 week old daughter facing the same issue. To my surprise, my mother is still in contact with the doctor that operated on my two feet. He's in his mid 70s now and he personally came to the hospital to see my daughter, shocked in disbelief that the history is repeating itself. He did encourage me though that my daughter's condition is way better than mine was and there's a high probability that 1 month of full leg casts and 1 month of half leg cast (from toes to knees) will suffice, no surgery required. I hope he's right. Because he's in retirement, he didn't have that clearance, however his younger colleague who still works at the hospital just confirmed it by thoroughly examining my 3 weeks old daughter. It's our first day with her in full leg cast (both of her legs), so far she feels agitated at times, but sleeps well. But when she cries, sometimes, it feels like a different cry from those when she's hungry and my heart splits in half when I hear her. But I know it's for her own good and she seems strong. I'm writing this for all parents current and future whose child may have this problem - do not be afraid, you'll probably be shaken and shocked when the doctors start wrapping your child in casts, but say to yourselves that he or she will one day be completely normal and will be able to walk and run like all other children. It's the fact that they won't even remember this, any of it, but we as parents will and those long enduring nights will one day be rewarded with running towards us, screaming "pa-pa" or "ma-ma", overfilled with joy, hugging us and cuddling. Those enduring nights will be rewarded when we see them run and climb, fall and get up, making us proud.

My husband was born with clubbed feet...his legs and ankles and feet are so scarred up from years of repair. He was born in 1976 so I'm glad to hear there are better ways to fix it these days. Thank you for the information!

I was born with severe club foot. I was born in 1974. I had over 20 operations in England in the 1970s and mostly 1980s. Over the last 4 years my left foot has suffered from severe osteoarthritis. I have seen 4 specialist, one recommendation amputation. 3 years down I still suffer but walk with orthotics and limit my walking. My poorly developed of calf muscles is obvious, (I’m sure your husband is the same) even more so as I am very muscular - so rarely go swimming etc due to self awareness. Otherwise I am a very healthy man (no one would know unless I told them).

I had clubfeet, but for some reason, the casting on my right foot didn't work so I had to do surgery when the bone developed after I was already three years old. I can't fully stretch my right foot because of that, but I can walk and live a perfectly normal life, which is more than many can say. I was also the fastest kid in my class

My son was born with a very severe club foot ,operations and casts did straighten it out , but it was a shock to parents because it was before scans , 1972 ,

Hi - quick question. I couldn't quite understand from the video when you would use amniocentesis. Do you use this when you suspect associated abnormalities? And is it essential for the diagnosis?
