Informative video! I'm just now learning DJ'ing and thinking of doing a 60-minute pre-planned set at home as a test. I plan on freestyling once I get more comfortable!

As a house dj I can get away with preparing maybe the first ½ - 1st hour. Then I freestyle the rest. I do 3 hours every week...you gotta go with the flow. You have to check the environment..

I've listened to my recordings just about every day since i started. I need to get a "real" recording and not just FB live.. I just riff and have fun. But I also play in a punk band and have so for over 30yrs. Reading the crowd crosses all genres of music, trust me. Sometimes you can have your set dialed and still turn a crowd away.

Great topic of discussion!!! I figure whatever I get paid to due which is please the crowd and keep it flowing to build my business. I’m not a club DJ

Don't know if you're too familiar with the current rap scene (Drake, Future, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Gunna etc) but if you are, a hip-hop set would be great. Love the content as well mate.

I completely agree, it has to be a balance. I used to have a friend who makes me feel guilty for playing preplanned sequences. He says “lightning doesn’t strike twice.” He reminds me of how you describe your 100% freestyle friend- very talented but inconsistent. This is back in the vinyl days when things are even less forgiving. I tend to go the middle ground- I have groups and chunks here and there 2-3 tracks that I know builds well, and just use them like blocks as if I’m free styling. On the completely flip side, I have another friend who was very prideful and sees himself as an “artist.” He wanted to be John Digweed (in the late 90s early 2000s) when he went really gloomy and monotonous, and when the crowd doesn’t respond to his preplanned sets, he just shrugs it off and blames it on the crowd. He didn’t realize that before he gets stone certain stature he has to cater to the crowd. Needless to say his night did not last long at all.

I am very scared of freestyling, but I want to learn 3 decks so well, that I can just look at a song and listen to it, then be able to mix it well, I think that if you prepare well, the better your gig will be. Loving the videos Andrew!

Do all big festival sets need to be pre planned because of the light shows?
@bradleycordero87112 жыл бұрын
Nope! Usually the whole light setup is connected to a control board which is manipulated by a crew who are sat behind the crowd
@midsekta6452 Жыл бұрын
Often there is a CDJ synced with the master deck dedicated to sending timecode to the lighting engineers so that the lighting is always BPM synced with the music

Pre planning is one thing, pre recording a set to USB and pretending to mix live is just a joke IMO. Watch most of the KZbin "star DJ's" (& a lot of the old names, Oakenfold etc), most haven't even got the mixer switched on FFS!! Constant knob twiddling and never appearing to cue up? Hmmmm :) What boils my piss is reading the comments, "top set", "wow! Amazing mixing"! Probably pre recorded using sync too. Zero skill in that.

U really think that Paul Oakenfold pre recorded his set at festivals!?
