You should rework the "affectionate" part. It is true they are very affectionate, but only towards 1 person. It has very little interest in others. My father in law has one, the dog has known me all it's life, I take her for 2 walks a day, but that is all i am to her, her walker. She will never come to me for any affection, my relationship with it is purely transactional. Which is pretty strange because pretty much any other dog tends to like me and want to be with me, but not karma. She is however completely obedient even towards me. They are indeed pretty stubborn, but also very food driven, which outweighs her stubbornness. So it pays to always have a treat at hand. So anyone that wants this dog really needs to think it through, both for themselves and for the dog. If you want a dog for the whole family, I would honestly never think of a clumber. Unless of course if you want one for it's derpy face and beautifull coat, but if that is the case, get a plush doll, you shouldn't even consider getting a dog. So I wouldn't call this a good family dog, it is however great for ppl who are alone and want a really loyal buddy that doesn't require too much physical excercise. Of course, you'll get all the exercise you need vacuuming up their hair all day. Also, beware with elders in the house, they will bump into them as they aren't exactly, uhm, elegant, so they could easily cause a fall. Same goes with little kids, it's a fairly heavy dog for it's size, so a happy jump can be pretty hard hitting.

As a former :( Clumber owner I will back this up, both our former male Clumbers were 'sexist' as my wife put it. Both dogs were very affectionate towards me, to the point that our last Clumber, as he got old, would simply sleep all day whilst I was at work, only picking up when I got home, even if my wife was around all day. Something else to be very aware of is that they are keen explorers. Not like a hound, running off to not return, but boisterous and persistent in their pursuit of whatever they think is interesting at that time. If that interesting thing is not you, than they will simply ignore you (whilst staying within range) to satisfy their curiosity. That said, they are really awesome pets, they are smart but absolute clowns at the same time. Our clumbers made us laugh every single day and we can't wait to get another.

Interesting! I've had several dogs and my Clumber is by far the best "family" dog I've ever experienced. You're spot on about one thing- Clumbers will always love food more than you lol

I've seen a clumber beat up a Rottweiler one time. I got bit pulling the clumber off. Lucky the rotti survived the mauling.

As far as affectionate goes, I think it depends on the dog and the family. We currently have a male clumber who loves and is affectionate to everyone. He does absolutely belong to my daughter and asks to go to bed in her room every night.

I don't know where you are from but Brits are famous for their fondness of long walks in nature. With that I mean a couple of hours, in woodland and pasture. Nothing like your average American driving everywhere or sticking to pavement. The British are also known for fowl hunting. Very different from American hunters. There's no guerilla games going on, this is a highly civilized tweed jacket form of hunting, and the dog will swim to fetch game if necessary. The breed is perfectly adapted to all these. And has a definate dignity about it. I can't imagine someone being harsh and loud towards this dog, or crating it all day, that would be a crime (although I don't condone it for any breed). I've never met a Clumber that wasn't a delightful person. Definately not a first dog, and I'd not recommend it to too inactive or overeaters, as this breed is sensitive to weight issues and if you can't be balanced yourself, you're more likely to indulge you pets in unhealthy habits and disregard the warning. For folk like that it's better to get a whippet or two and provide a big yard to race around in, or big pasture close by to run off lead. Given the opportunity to run like the wind they will, and will doze on the couch next to you for hours on end if they've had their sprints and feeding them fast food and garbage will punish you with dealing with the results of bad bowels. However, crating would be cruel (these dogs need a v e r y soft couch to stretch out on (the literally have no fatty cushioning) and they don't respond well to loudness.
