I have a 7 year old female clumber. She is a great dog, affectionate, zero agression, playful and food driven. I no longer need a clock in the house as i have trained her to get a treat before every regular activity. She will give a silent bark and walk to the cupboard where i keep her treats at 7 am, 11.45 am and 17.45 pm, because that is the hour that she is due a treat (skipping it will result in a lot of whinig), meanwhile, i also know that it's time to eat or make dinner for the family. Of course she will try to trick me by doing the bark and walking to the cupboard to get some extra treats. I can't blame her, it works often enough for her to be stupid to not try lol. Apart from that, she is great with all kids, but very shy and untrusting of adults, even friends that come over all the time. She won't do anything to them, she will just completely ignore them and come sit beside me. Also never touch a clumber even if the owner gives you permission, you need the permission of the clumber, and she'll give you that by coming over to you, which means, if you are an adult, the odds of that happening are minute. It seems to be a general thing among clumbers, all of the other owners that i see at the yearly meeting at the breeder say the same thing. Also, belly rubs are a no go you can touch the chest, they won't bite you if you do, but you will eternaly be on their shitlist. They are however very very clumsy, so if you are fragile, don't get a clumber, they will bump you over, and you will fall, it's guaranteed. Also she doesn't like to be alone at all, if your neighbour comes over to chat, you can't leave her inside, you need to make sure she is part of the conversation, if not she'll be very unhappy. Apart from that it is an expensive dog (not just the purchasing price). The fur groes faster than my lawn, so it's a monthly visit to the trimmer. And the eyes are a problem, eventhough mine is as pedigree as a dog can get she has needed surgery on her eyelids twice, and the problem still isn't fully solved, but the vet refuses to do a third operation. So it is a constant routine of eye drops and cleaning out the eyes. Along with of course the ear infections, clean them as much as you want, they will get infected. Overall a great dog, with a very special character, you need to be with one to understand exactly how different they are to most other dogs, they truly are princes and princesses and demand to be treated that way, except of course when they play the jester. So to anyone who wants to get one, you must consider the following 1. can you afford it 2. ppl who can for some reason or other not afford to fall should not get one, because she will bump into you while walking, it's just what they do 3. will she be left alone for long periods regularly, because these dogs really really hate being alone 4. can you deal with their stubborness, mine got tired of walking once and just decided to drop down for an hour and refused to move, not even for treats, that's the lvl of stubborn that we are talking about 5. they are very sensitive dogs, if you have a tendency to yell at a dog when they are doing something bad, this is absolutely not the dog for you, they will be pissed off at you and ignore you for the rest of the day if you do. Except of course when it's time for treats, she'll demand her treat and then continue to ignore you. 6. they do need some daily exercise but not that much tbh, just running around in the garden is fine with her. Those are the most important things that I can think off, also try to spend a day with an adult clumber before deciding to get one, so that you can get some idea of their particular character, they truly aren't like any other dog.

I've had a couple of boys, and this is pretty much true across the board, with one or two exceptions. Our dogs were interested in meeting people who came to our house, but then left after a few minutes to sleep. They napped ALL THE TIME. However, they always wanted physical access to us. I agree that you can't leave them in the house if you're outside. The boys tend to forgive and forget being disciplined. A treat is all the apology I've ever needed to give. But they are trainable, so they didn't misbehave often. EXCEPT when we had to put our first boy on a diet. He tried to steal food sometimes, and often succeeded. They are short, but his length of body allowed him to reach the counter!

How sweet, gentle, and well-determined is your Clumber Spaniel? Does their hunting instinct get triggered by birds? Do let us know in the comments!

I thought my Clumber was the sweetest thing in the world and wouldn't hurt a fly. Just a big old cuddly lump. Then my neighbors got some chickens... turns out there's a vicious killer hiding behind all that fluff.

I used to have my Clumber groomed every 6 weeks and had him shaved down to make him look like a short haired dog--and this made him shed less. They are amazing unusual fablulous dogs.

Clumbers are a wonderful breed. I had the privilege of having one in my life for 12 wonderful years. 1. They DONT make good watch dogs, as he said early in the video. They would rather be petted than guard anything. 2. The grooming on these dogs is NOT as easy as he said. They require alot of grooming. The coat mats easily if you keep their coat long. The reason is that the hair is silky and soft. 3. They have anal glands issues, and they get infections and can get impacted. I had alot of vets suggest getting the anal glands removed. I was then told by a promanate breeder to NEVER do that. They are wonderful dogs but they are HIGH maintenance.

I've had two Clumbers. The first was fairly healthy, other than some light allergies. The second had a few problems, including deafness, ear and skin infections, and we had to sort out his diet to fix his anal gland issues. In the end, a degenerative nerve disease took him from us around 12 years old. But it was a pretty good life, just occasionally expensive. Neither made a good watch dog. More curious about things than threatened.

Noble? lol if you listen to the text of this, it contradicts itself. Just because some nobility enjoyed it doesn't mean it has a noble bearing. Unless you think of Noble as goofy, childlike, clumsy , docile, easily confused, excessively drooling... stocky & short, weak featured. lol
