@@SeattlePioneer yes, accept the challenge to love and care for a dog someone rejected, these rescue dogs aren't trash...i resued a puppy at 7.5 weeks, she was discarded at 6.5 weeks...it's been a challenge and joy, if you understand how to train this challenge you can be successful , but if you aren't that person don't.....but dogs from breeders have issues too, i've had 2 rescues and 2 from a breeder, great dogs all

@@pamhenry4150 I want a Chi, but can't right now. I inherited my parents senior female Maltese who was 14, spoiled, pottied & pooted everywhere, hard to groom, tried to bite people & dogs on walks, regardless of size. She was difficult, but I knew she wouldn't be taken care of if I didn't take her. She is 15 1/2 now, doesn't bite cutting nails or bathing any more, still barks at dogs, but doesn't attack, is litter box trained, and we're bonded. It took a lot out of me, but she has given me comfort losing my parents within a year of one another and my beloved Havanese too. She is demanding, but sweet. My point is, if you can rescue a dog (those small fur babies wrap their paws around your heart-Chi, Maltese, Havanese, Yorkie, etc) that may fill an empty place in your heart you both need filled. Good luck to you! 🤗🐾🐶🌻

Hi from France! Poodles are the best breed to me! So intelligent and extremely good alarm dog. I can even say guard dogs ‘cause they’ll defend their humans no matter how big they are. Toy poodle are also used to find drugs as they are very small they can go anywhere. Mines lived up to 18years, one had brain tumor and the other one a big heart murmur. None was put to sleep as they had no suffering. Have great days and years with your poodle! Give him hugs and kisses from me please! 🌹🌹🌹😘

He took a lot of work to change his attitude towards biting people and doing damage in the house. HE was not potty trained, Had terrable teeth which cost a bunch right away and other things. He is good now and being loved till the end. He is a Dandy Dinmont terrier mix the best they could tell. 4th adopted dog I've had. So glad I got him. Love ❤ the little guy.

I can’t explain this phenomenon but there is a shelter near my home for people who give up Their senior dogs. A lot of my retired friends adapt there, aware that while the dog may not have years left to live, the stated goal is to give that dog the best life possible with the time he has left. It’s a gift for both of them

My vet told me how lucky my dogs were to be with me, but she added be prepared to have your heart broken! The older dogs need me, and I need them! My Tobey had lost his elderly owner and was taken to a shelter. My vet asked me if I would adopt him…the best six months ever. I gave him six months of pure love! He was a Maltipoo…adorable!

We have had Shih Tzu dogs for over 25 years. They are excellent home dogs who love to be by you or with you all of the time. We have a puppy cut on our Watson. They are smart and pay attention and talk to us as needed. We have him groomed every 3 weeks. They are happy dogs and love to play with you. He likes walks or hikes but not too long. He doesn't mind other dogs but, not a real playful unless it is a Shih Tzu or a person. I took care of my granddaughter every Thursday for a year. He was always watching her and being close to her. Agree completely, I am 64, we just got a black Lab puppy, she comes from a hunting bloodline so she's a bundle of energy. I've had, bred, trained and hunted with Labs and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Labs are the best if you don't need one for security, most of mine would assist a burglar, the pup I have now is the smartest of all the labs I've ever seen. Show bloodlines are much calmer. Chesapeake Bay retrievers can often be very territorial and very protective of their humans and property.

Yes! to that last line!! I have a 50 lb yellow lab who makes eye contact, responds quicklly and quietly to a large number of verbal directions (I won't call them "commands"! He just wants to please me and me talking to him helps him know what I want him to do--it's that simple). He is such a dear. We have such a fun routine and so many cuddle times--it's a hoot to observe him repeatedly finding new ways to make use of limited space when he wants to climb on beside me on the recliner, finding another new way to fit himself to available space. He's a treasure and I am so glad to provide companionship to him as he does to me.

As a senior dog lover, I will always have a well-bred health-wise German Shepherd. I love their intelligence, train-ability and temperament. I love their size, their endurance and loyalty. Most little dogs are poorly trained and often BITE - everyone. With respect to this list, a fish in an aquarium would be a less stressful pet. Glad most of the comments reflect those people who adore these little dogs but they actually take MORE work. If you honestly want a well-trained dog than most medium-sized dogs, the TOP dog for a senior IS a retired greyhound!

I’m really surprised that some of these dogs are recommended for seniors. The beagle, cocker, and corgi were all bred to do specific tasks. The beagle and cocker spaniel were bred to hunt and the corgi was bred to be a herding dog. Because of this, they can all be very energetic dogs. I don’t know if a lot of seniors could manage a more energetic dog. They’re all great dogs though, and if you’re up for walking and playing with your dog, I think they would make very good companions.

I agree. I have grown up with and trained some of these dogs. To suggest a herding dog or a hunting dog for seniors is down right irresponsible. Maybe a toy or miniature poodle, but even small dogs can be a trip hazard for the elderly. DOGS AND OWNERS NEED TO BE TRAINED. I am 70 now and on my last dog, that I trained myself. She is a blessing and a well behaved lab.

Our family experience with our last dog lasted 22 years. He was half Chihuahua and half Jack Russell terrier and a rescued dog from a shelter. We trained him locally as a service dog. I am convinced that the reason Chico lived a good long life and was healthy until the end was the fact that we fed him diced ginger root that we mixed into his regular food after making fresh ginger tea for our own consumption on a daily basis. Chico loved the taste of ginger. It prevented joint pain and served as a natural antiseptic. Fresh ginger root is readily available here in Hawaii. It may be more difficult to find in other places but it is worth a try. It helps both humans and dogs alike.

My very first dog (when I was in my thirties) was a crocker spaniel. My daughter named him Duffy--short for Doofus, because he was a goofball. He was adopted on the day before he was going to be put down by the county shelter. I had him neutered (Please, do not think that you are doing your dog a favor by NOT having them neutered: they will live longer, healthier lives if it is done early.) Growing up, we had never had a dog (or even a cat). So here I was, middle-aged and a new dog owner. He was not troublesome, just sweet and affectionate. The only downside to owning a Crocker, is the cost of grooming, which must be done regularly. Duffy lived to be 15, and died quietly in the yard right after I got home from work. I buried him under my peach tree that evening, and (I used to think people were foolish or dumb to grieve for an animal,) but I cried for two days when Duffy died---even now, it is hard to write this, as my eyes are full of tears again, and he passed away more than twenty-five years ago. So my favorite as a suggestion to you, would be a Crocker Spanial.

Maltese were French kings’s dog since XV century and are called cushion dogs because all they need is their human next to them and to be comfortable. As a senior citizen. I have a Border Colli, called Winston; he is 7 years old and with me for 7 years. The most striking characteristic of Winston is his intelligence...it's as if Winston knows what I want to do before I do it, especially since the passing of my wife. I also have two cats and Winston is very well socialised with the cats...they are all besties. Winston's role is diversified; he is my best friend and companion, he is my security guard; Winston is always near me, giving me that assurance of safety. Other dog breeds I would recommend for older persons are, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Labradors...I have seen these breeds with elders and they fit and complement a senior's lifestyle on multi fronts.

Does border collie shade a much?
@ZaahidArnold
@ZaahidArnold Жыл бұрын
@@jonnanr18 Yes, Border Collies do shed their coat continuously; it comes with having a dog with a thick coat. However to mitigate hair falling out all over the place, I brush Winston's coat twice a week...doing this I find his hair does not fall out all over the place, but rather comes off when brushing. My experience is that when you don't brush their hair...it sheds spontaneously. Every dog breed has its pluses and minuses...it's what you are prepared to live with in that dog and most importantly is your connection (relationship) with your dog, does not matter what dog breed you have, if your connection with your dog is not good, then owning and managing your animal could become a nightmare instead of endless love and pure joy and happiness; your relationship with your dog depends significantly more on you than your dog. Winston is a rescued dog and many pet owners I spoke to over the years who owned multiple pets tell me that the rescued animals are by far much more loving, caring and appreciative animals.

My son and I share a beautiful Doberman Pinscher. Our dog, Bubbles, lives with me and is the sweetest companion. I am like the sweet elderly lady who, when stopped by a policeman, while driving, she immediately informed him up front that she had a few guns of various kinds hidden in her car. The officer asked her if she had a license for her guns and she acknowledged she did indeed have a concealed gun permit. His response to her was, "lady, what are you afraid of!" Her answer, "absolutely nothing!" It is smart for those of us elderly ladies living alone, with cognitive minds, to have protection. So, mine is a big short haired loyal dog. No one, and I mean no one, even my children and grand children come to my house without Bubbles knowing, and alerting all that this house is protected by him. He obeys Robert, my son, and myself without fail. I have NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF, because, if someone was stupid enough to mean harm to me or break in, they would be quite surprised by Bubbles love and loyalty to me. I also have cameras that alert me whenever some one approaches my home. Then I can say, "if I were you I would high tail it out of here before I open my door."

He’s so wonderful and funny loves to lounge around but when he wants to play it’s play time period lol. He doesn’t play for an extremely long time just in burst. I must say he sure seems never to smell nor does he shed. Oh I must say I totally adore him. But on occasion I miss my girl, he seems to know something is up. I would take a shelter dog in a minute (had several growing up), but the shelters here rarely have small dogs and if one comes in, they are picked up quickly by small dog rescue groups with long waiting lists of people wanting a small dog & willing to pay more to get them. The shelters are maxed out with pitbulls and labs, both too much for me. See many good hearted people (especially wonen) with these big dogs dragging them everywhere. Used to be a mixture at shelters, but these big dogs are being overbred and hard to find small dogs even through breeders. Some of us have limitations for weight & travel and have to have small breeds. 🐶🐾🤔🌻

@@southernlady8809 I hope you can find a smaller dog that fits you! I live in Mexico and several of the shelters here send all sizes of dogs up north to the USA for adoption. We bought a French Bulldog two years ago. I've had several dogs in my life and this guy is amazing. I can't tell you how much we love him and how easy he has been. Former big dog peeps here, now Frenchie lovers. *edit after reading some of the replies.. My wife and I are both somewhat obsessive with training dogs while they are puppies. Training them starts the DAY they enter our homes. He's excitable when he should be excited and calm and relaxed for most of the day. With most dogs, there's an element of garbage in, garbage out. Our best friends bought one after seeing ours for his first year and they have had the same results with their dog. I would never tolerate a yappy dog. I can't stand them.

@edie4321
@edie4321 2 жыл бұрын
@@redstateforever , because of their popularity they are genetic messes right now it would take an exceptional breeder. They have many problems. I was surprised by that comment because all I've ever heard of is their excessive health problems. The dog you described may have been from a puppy mill where they produce dogs such as I described. Puppy mills should never exist.
@redstateforever
@redstateforever 2 жыл бұрын
@@edie4321 I agree. We’ve had several pure bred dogs, mostly because we wanted certain traits (like good with kids, doesn’t shed, etc.). But we’ve always bought from private, small breeders who basically raise the pups in their homes, a litter at a time. And we’ve had great results from that. The dogs you find at the pet stores come from a living hell, and who knows what you’ll get. They should be banned, it’s cruelty to breed dogs like that. There are plenty of those small, reputable breeders to buy from if you need a dog with specific traits, and would only be a boon to those kinds of caring breeders if the puppy mills went away for good.

I'd go 100 or 150 miles to get one and maybe a little farther. We were living in NC then and got her in Asheville at the Animal Shelter! Right now I have a Shih Tzu that was given to me but he is blind and 16 yrs old. I don't want another like him because of the grooming he needs! My son and I do the grooming but he fights every moment of it. He says, "Don't touch MT paws or my face! Or I'll bite you!!!!" Otherwise he's a loving dog. I think, from what I was told, that his early life was going from one home to another! And he didn't get much loving and cuddling! Glad I could give him a good life--he was 6 or 7 when I got him!!

Have faith in JESUS CHRIST as LORD and SAVIOR for HE SAVES from hell❗️ *What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Just Believe ❤️ Love you and GOD BLESS
