They are smart and pay attention and talk to us as needed. We have him groomed every 3 weeks. They are happy dogs and love to play with you. He likes walks or hikes but not too long. He doesn't mind other dogs but, not a real playful unless it is a Shih Tzu or a person. I took care of my granddaughter every Thursday for a year. He was always watching her and being close to her. Glad most of the comments reflect those people who adore these little dogs but they actually take MORE work. Our family experience with our last dog lasted 22 years. He was half Chihuahua and half Jack Russell terrier and a rescued dog from a shelter. We trained him locally as a service dog. I am convinced that the reason Chico lived a good long life and was healthy until the end was the fact that we fed him diced ginger root that we mixed into his regular food after making fresh ginger tea for our own consumption on a daily basis. Chico loved the taste of ginger. It prevented joint pain and served as a natural antiseptic. Fresh ginger root is readily available here in Hawaii. It may be more difficult to find in other places but it is worth a try. It helps both humans and dogs alike.

We bought a French Bulldog two years ago. I've had several dogs in my life and this guy is amazing. I can't tell you how much we love him and how easy he has been. Former big dog peeps here, now Frenchie lovers. *edit after reading some of the replies.. My wife and I are both somewhat obsessive with training dogs while they are puppies. Training them starts the DAY they enter our homes. He's excitable when he should be excited and calm and relaxed for most of the day. With most dogs, there's an element of garbage in, garbage out. Our best friends bought one after seeing ours for his first year and they have had the same results with their dog. I would never tolerate a yappy dog. I can't stand them.

I’ve only been around one Frenchie and it was a hyperactive, skittish, yappy mess. Is that uncommon for the breed?
@edie43212 жыл бұрын
@@redstateforever , because of their popularity they are genetic messes right now it would take an exceptional breeder. They have many problems. I was surprised by that comment because all I've ever heard of is their excessive health problems. The dog you described may have been from a puppy mill where they produce dogs such as I described. Puppy mills should never exist.
@redstateforever2 жыл бұрын
@@edie4321 I agree. We’ve had several pure bred dogs, mostly because we wanted certain traits (like good with kids, doesn’t shed, etc.). But we’ve always bought from private, small breeders who basically raise the pups in their homes, a litter at a time. And we’ve had great results from that. The dogs you find at the pet stores come from a living hell, and who knows what you’ll get. They should be banned, it’s cruelty to breed dogs like that. There are plenty of those small, reputable breeders to buy from if you need a dog with specific traits, and would only be a boon to those kinds of caring breeders if the puppy mills went away for good.

As a senior citizen. I have a Border Colli, called Winston; he is 7 years old and with me for 7 years. The most striking characteristic of Winston is his intelligence...it's as if Winston knows what I want to do before I do it, especially since the passing of my wife. I also have two cats and Winston is very well socialised with the cats...they are all besties. Winston's role is diversified; he is my best friend and companion, he is my security guard; Winston is always near me, giving me that assurance of safety. Other dog breeds I would recommend for older persons are, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Labradors...I have seen these breeds with elders and they fit and complement a senior's lifestyle on multi fronts.
@jonnanr18 Жыл бұрын
Does border collie shade a much?
@ZaahidArnold Жыл бұрын
@@jonnanr18 Yes, Border Collies do shed their coat continuously; it comes with having a dog with a thick coat. However to mitigate hair falling out all over the place, I brush Winston's coat twice a week...doing this I find his hair does not fall out all over the place, but rather comes off when brushing. My experience is that when you don't brush their hair...it sheds spontaneously. Every dog breed has its pluses and minuses...it's what you are prepared to live with in that dog and most importantly is your connection (relationship) with your dog, does not matter what dog breed you have, if your connection with your dog is not good, then owning and managing your animal could become a nightmare instead of endless love and pure joy and happiness; your relationship with your dog depends significantly more on you than your dog. Winston is a rescued dog and many pet owners I spoke to over the years who owned multiple pets tell me that the rescued animals are by far much more loving, caring and appreciative animals.

My very first dog (when I was in my thirties) was a crocker spaniel. My daughter named him Duffy--short for Doofus, because he was a goofball. He was adopted on the day before he was going to be put down by the county shelter. I had him neutered (Please, do not think that you are doing your dog a favor by NOT having them neutered: they will live longer, healthier lives if it is done early.) Growing up, we had never had a dog (or even a cat). So here I was, middle-aged and a new dog owner. He was not troublesome, just sweet and affectionate. The only downside to owning a Crocker, is the cost of grooming, which must be done regularly. Duffy lived to be 15, and died quietly in the yard right after I got home from work. I buried him under my peach tree that evening, and (I used to think people were foolish or dumb to grieve for an animal,) but I cried for two days when Duffy died---even now, it is hard to write this, as my eyes are full of tears again, and he passed away more than twenty-five years ago. So my favorite as a suggestion to you, would be a Crocker Spanial.

Have faith in JESUS CHRIST as LORD and SAVIOR for HE SAVES from hell❗️ *What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Westies are also very intelligent and easy to train...BUT are very head strong and need exercise. Great for an active family. Our Tulip was one of the most memorable dogs I ever owned. She went everywhere with us...canoeing, swimming, hiking, etc. They are an active breed. :)

@@Strongerthandirt8695 = Depends on the individual Westie. Our 7yr old female Westie is the tamest dog we have ever had (we have had previously two male Westies which were rowdier). Our female enjoys running on the beach, but she can spend whole days in-house, lying on a carpet or a cushion, provided she is close to her Mistress for which she has an absolute devotion. We love her and find she is a perfect companion for us (we’re both above 75).

Funny how this is a video of dogs for SENIORS and ELDERLY, but EVERY part of the video shows dogs with children and young people...maybe in your land, seniors are 20???

Mr.P -- I agree. There is at least one other 'dogs for seniors' video floating around here somewhere that depicts the same thing -- young people with the recommended breeds. Seniors finally appear at the end.🙄 Also, just about any dog can be a great companion for an older person as long as the person is physically, emotionally capable. Senior citizens come in all varieties, just like the dogs we love. 💕

They did NOT actually recommend a Beagle for elderly folks, did they??? OMG! Actually, there were several breeds here that I think would be a bit much for a Senior to handle. I don't know who came up with this list, but I think they had better go back and rethink it and perhaps talk to some elderly folks who have actually HAD particular breeds and know which ones are better suited for older folks.

I agree! Beagles run off, bark a lot and need constant attention. This is not a list for seniors.

I'm on my third beagle, adopted all as adult dogs. Only 1 was super active. My present Beagle adopted at 8 years of age, so was more of a couch surfer. We get up in the morning, open door and she hangs out in the backyard for 10 minutes, comes back in. She gets her morning biscuit She sleeps on and off with a couple of bathroom breaks. She gets one 40 min walk with my husband, I have mobility issues so I can't walk that much. She was raised by an older couple and relinquished when they had to go into a care facility, she is perfect for us.

We have a very active boxer and an active dachshund. Both rescues. They aren’t on the list and probably shouldn’t be if you aren’t somewhat active. But they sure do keep us laughing. Also the boxer is a people magnet who forces us to talk to strangers everywhere we go. We waited until retirement to get dogs so we wouldn’t have to leave them during the day. They are the sweetest companions.

I had two Bichon Frise They passed around 16-17 years of age. They were wonderful intelligent and lively. Lots of walks and play. They were a lot to take care of and grooming is intensive with this breed, or they will mat up. They also want you there with them. They will rule the household if allowed. They traveled well and did not bark much while I was with them. They got upset if left alone. These are loving and friendly dogs. They love on almost everyone if socialized while young. They are beautiful!!!!! Real public stoppers. Expect crowds if in public.

I am owning my third pug and really enjoy her dancing and cooked head when we talk to her as she tries to understand what we are saying. She does understand "are you hungry or do you want to eat?" She is not aggressive at all so I never have to worry that she might bite a child who wants to pet her.

I also think you should go to your shelter where they put dogs to sleep and pick a dog that you like for your company. Rescue an older dog that has been dumped by their disgusting owners. The amount of love and loyalty that you will receive from that Rescued Senior will swell your heart.

I am amazed that the Shih Tzu didn't make the list. I have had three and they are super sweet and want to cuddle and be held like babies. My first one lived 17 years. My second one now lives with an elderly couple and loves being a country dog. I have one now that is about a year and a half and she is my spoiled baby.

Agreed. I now have a Shih-Poo, (from a private adoption at age 3.) She is most loving and calm little dog. She's very attached to me. She weighs only 9 pounds, so she's easy to pick up. Cuddling is her favorite sport (along with eating.) she is curious about everything, and enjoys sniffs and new places and other dogs.

My family and I wanted a dog (mainly me) so I did soooo much research. I found (on kijiji lol) a dog that was a mix of our favourite breeds. Long story short, she chose us, and I’m glad she did. She will guard you when needed, but isn’t aggressive. She’s also a pretty chill/lazy dog. She’s a mastiff mix German Shepard. She is currently 9 months old, and very well trained (thanks to me lol). If a person walk on our property, and we don’t welcome them, she will growl and bark at them, and if we let her, she will attack. I personally don’t recommend a pug, or a bulldog. Mainly because of all the health issues that come with them. The poor dogs can barely breathe

I’m 72 and have 2, four year old Standard Poodles. One is a wild child, the other laid back. They are both very affectionate and loving. I have a good sized backyard that they can run in and get rid of their energy. I had Scottish Terriers before and they are great dogs too. They can be pretty head strong.

My son and I share a beautiful Doberman Pinscher. Our dog, Bubbles, lives with me and is the sweetest companion. I am like the sweet elderly lady who, when stopped by a policeman, while driving, she immediately informed him up front that she had a few guns of various kinds hidden in her car. The officer asked her if she had a license for her guns and she acknowledged she did indeed have a concealed gun permit. His response to her was, "lady, what are you afraid of!" Her answer, "absolutely nothing!" It is smart for those of us elderly ladies living alone, with cognitive minds, to have protection. So, mine is a big short haired loyal dog. No one, and I mean no one, even my children and grand children come to my house without Bubbles knowing, and alerting all that this house is protected by him. He obeys Robert, my son, and myself without fail. I have NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF, because, if someone was stupid enough to mean harm to me or break in, they would be quite surprised by Bubbles love and loyalty to me. I also have cameras that alert me whenever some one approaches my home. Then I can say, "if I were you I would high tail it out of here before I open my door."

Papillons make wonderful senior pets. Exceptionally smart, low maintenance coat which sheds minimally. They are easily house trained, energetic but undemanding, very affectionate and loyal.
