First try soldering a new cable nipple to my clutch cable to make it shorter using a cheap solder pot off ebay on my BMW R100 cafe racer project and it worked perfectly. repair or shorten your motorcycle cables easily with solder pot and soldered cable nipples yourself and save time and money.

It's interesting the strength of just lead, I have since 90's always used med silver solder on the barrel ends on BSA and my BMW r100rt and r60. You can do the silver solder paste with a butane mini torch just vise grip heat sink the cable exit side. Cherry red and your done.

Back in 1995 I was quoted $100 for a accelerator cable for my BMW 318, I made one for $2, it lasted till I disposed of the car in2010. I bet you saved a few $$$$

So good mate, it's crazy what some things cost especially when they have a brand behind them!

not using a bird caging tool is a really big mistake. I just had to buy one because just simply bending and putting the cable in a vise and hitting it with a hammer and everything in between will not work. I have had mine break at least 7 times in the last year. some of the rigging on the ends of the cables have lasted 2 months and some just a few days. its worth the investment. the bird caging tool does not fray the cable. the big problem is fraying the strands just makes it that much easier for the individual strands to pull straight through the solder and makes the individual strands weaker and prone to breaking. the bird caging tool l makes a ball that WILL not pull through and retains the strength of all strands. I highly recommend you invest in the tool. the thing though is why have such a nice build and skimp? thats why I had to breakdown and buy the tool. my build was getting too nice to know I half assed the cable and plus the fact it broke so often. I do a lot of cross country riding so I have to cover my ass in the long run

Wow, thanks for the heads up Marshall. Pretty weird they came out that easy and frequently mate, did they pull through or just snap? I haven't had any issues yet and they've had a fair bit of use but I will keep it in mind if one gives way. I'm tipping if one let's go it will probably be the clutch as the throttle doesn't have much strain but for that to pull through would need quite a lot of pressure. I did do a few tester pieces before I committed to the cable and gave one some serious punishment trying to get it back out but in the end it just snapped at the nipple

Thanks so much for the comment Christopher. Really glad it helped you out mate, it's quite a process throwing these things together so if it helps someone out that's awesome news. Feel free to get in touch if there's other questions you have I may have the answers to. I'm more active in Insta for anything if your on there or check here pretty often too. Thanks again Scott

Thanks Geoff. Awesome mate, I'm using a 60/40 solder stick I found in the plumbing aisle of Bunnings. Also got the Bakers soldering fluid (flux) in the same spot buddy.

I honestly couldn't tell you sorry mate, I just turned tthe solder pot up to the point that all the solder was fully melted but not smoking. From memory it was about 3/4 to high but that probably doesn't mean much unfortunately.
