Brilliant. In my last lesson I had my first experience in slow moving traffic at rush hour and have realised I'm not confident in how to control at speeds around 10-15mph. This definitely helps answer some questions I had, especially the part about slipping the clutch when required! Just a thought but it would be great if the on screen display showed which gear is selected. Might be a bit manually intensive to implement though...

Never just use the clutch to get the car moving! Sure it works on a diesel but not on a petrol Car. Believe me my instructor taught me that on a diesel car but I bought a petrol Car and stalled trying to do that!

Alien Behind The Door I drive a Clio 0.9 TCe - it doesn't stall unless it's on a tight hill and I don't use a bit of gas. On a small hill, I can move easily without using the gas. You gotta let the car roll forward a bit before you release the clutch. It takes a bit of practice. However, if you're not confident, rather use the clutch and gas to move.

My tutor tells me to do this a very different way. He tells me to find the bite, release the hand brake and add some accelerator as the car beings to creep forward. This prolongs the life of the clutch and reduces the need for unnecessary acceleration which is therefore more economical...

I'm teaching someone to drive (I know not advised; but we're staying in empty car parks to learn clutch control atm given the absence of he-man controls). I love the fact that you explain about the ECU - I try myself to explain the mechanics of the car behind what's happening - when conveying why clutch bite is required; why stalling occurs, etc. But I was really amazed that you advocate clutch slipping... I was under the misapprehension that this can be a minor fault if the examiner spots you doing it. I even explained to my student that "what I did just there is discouraged" when she was watching me driving and I slipped the clutch in 2nd to go around a tighter-than-originally-expected corner.

A little clutch slipping (or ‘clutch control’) is necessary when moving away or at a tight corner. Excessive slipping, especially with higher engine revs should be avoided though as it can overheat and wear the clutch.

Absolutely agree; more pointing out what I'd call plain "slipping" (i.e. whilst driving at speed) rather than out-and-out clutch control when starting. And indeed if you do it too much you know because you get a load of blue smoke, it stinks of old fish, then suddenly you can't get up hills any more, then it costs you £400 for a new clutch. Ah, if we could but go back and give advice to our younger selves.

i learned this way on diesel: before any tight curve/corner press down the clutch, hold it, reduce with foot brake(mostly taking curves without need of stopping in second gear) and gently letting the clutch up to biting point so i won't lose control over the car and hit a car parked on the side of the road etc..

This technique should work in any car for really tight corners, where the car needs to be driven at about walking pace. I wouldn't use this technique at higher speeds though as it reduces control over the car's speed and may be marked down on a driving test as 'coasting'.

As it was, I drove around for an hour and it was information overload, having to remember how to use the clutch effectively, how to steer, how to take in information, and so on. I struggle with small spaces, like parking lots and bumper to bumper traffic etc because I lift the clutch up to biting point, move off the foot break and the car goes forward a few feet then slows down. I then press the accelerater, but not sure what to do with the clutch at that point. I'm in first gear at that time. I prefer highways and freeways though 🤣🤣. Smooth sailing

Think of the clutch as a way of varying the amount of drive to the wheels. You can adjust the biting point to give more or less drive, depending on how much you need. Concentrate on that, rather than just adding more engine power.

We think it is more to do with the size of the engine than the fuel type. Small engines are generally less powerful and are much easier to stall, but larger engines (with more power) are more forgiving when pulling away. Good idea - we did do that on a couple of other videos, but the editing software we are currently using doesn't allow that to be done as often as we would like. Firstly, don’t push the accelerator pedal whilst the clutch pedal is down. Then lift the clutch up slowly through the biting point and apply power as the clutch engages the gear.

As long as the engine revs are sensible (1500-2000) and there is nothing to stop the car driving forward (such as the handbrake) then there won't be any wear to the clutch. Our car's clutches always last at least 100,000 miles driving in this way.

That depends on how large your feet are, and also your preferred driving position. I like to keep my heel 'anchored' to the floor and pivot my ankle to move the clutch pedal, but others with smaller feet have to lift their whole leg up and down. There is no perfect solution for everyone, so just keep practicing and I'm sure you will work something out!

It sounds like your car isn't running as smoothly as it should. Maybe ask your garage about it next time you have it serviced.

If ur coasting in gear for too long, ur speed and rpm would drop a bit faster because of engine braking. If ur coasting in gear and it drops around idle rpm, you will stall, so you better shift down just before that idle rpm(around 1-2k rpm depends on car). If you want cruising speed, dont coast in gear. Coasting in gear works best when slowing down like in traffic. Coasting in gear however is better than coasting in neutral because your wheel speed is synced with the rpm.

OR when around 30-40 kms, if you aren't going to make a turn you could put the car in neutral and brake without resting your foot on the clutch.

is it necessary to hold the clutch at the biting point when taking off in first gear? once you reach the biting point can you release the clutch slowly rather than hold it. I feel like I am taking off in first gear slow when I hold it because I think I am just reaching the bottom tip of the biting point where the car barely begins to move. Firstly, don’t worry about wearing the clutch - they are actually pretty tough, and unless you completely abuse them they will last for ages (100,000 miles). Yes, a short pause once the clutch is biting will get the car rolling smoothly, whereas lifting the clutch in one go slowly will usually be more jerky.

A clutch will only wear as it connects the engine to a gear to drive the car forward or backwards, and if we feel a jerk as we lift the clutch it means we have connected the drive too quickly. Since Neutral means no gear is selected, there is no way to connect the engine to anything - which also means there will be no jerk or wear to the clutch.

In the section ‘manoeuvring with the clutch’ we only used the engines idle speed to move the car slowly - but in the section ‘pulling away with extra engine power’ we did use the accelerator pedal. The video suggests when each technique is best used. 👍🏼

To keep the car balanced we should adjust our car's speed, select the correct gear and then drive around the bend at a constant speed (with the clutch up). Coasting around bends with the clutch down will give less control. Maybe watch our other video 'Balanced Cornering' for more detail?

When approaching a turn press the clutch fully in, lower to 2nd gear if you’re gonna be at ~10mph, when you make the turn slowly raise the clutch and apply gas. You should turn smoothly.

Most likely a sensitive accelerator, just press it very very lightly. My car is the same, if I press down it jumps up to 2500rpm, but my instructors car would stay around 1500 even when almost fully pressed in.

Perhaps you are applying to much gas. Be careful cuz it may burn ur clutch sooner. Keep it around 1.5k and stay like that until you've fully lifted the clutch.

But my legs are too short. I can hardly reach the floor of the car let alone the clutch. If I move any closer I have no room for my legs and I don`t have space to move on and off the clutch. In order to push the clutch down fully, I need to use my whole leg...I can`t just push it with my toes. And I am pushing it real good. I push it! But after 2 hour lesson my leg is falling off.. :(

It always take a little time to get used to a different car - try using the pedals really gently, as that should help you smooth out your gear changes.

Does driving with half clutch on hills effect the clutch?

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I've always been worried about burning the clutch when starting from a standstill on a steep hill where I usually raise the RPM's higher than usual in first gear and slip the clutch a bit, then let go of the clutch pedal once the car has gained enough speed to stop it from stalling. I hope I'm not putting too much stress on the clutch.

We use about 2000rpm for a steep hill, and as long as the car isn't held on the handbrake for too long then there is no problem. Have you seen our other video: 'Clutch control on steep hills?'

if im slowing to the gears minimum speed and press the brakes the engine will surge and speed the car up

Yes, a modern car’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) will do that to try to prevent stalling. If the brakes are pushed more firmly though the engine will still stall. At very low speed we often use the clutch pedal to vary the amount of drive sent to the wheels, rather than force the car to slow with the brakes.

I don't really understand why we need to rush to 3rd gear if we want to pull out fast... I'd make use of the better power of the 2nd gear, instead of slugging it down by almost skipping for third. 🤔

Thanks for the questions! To get an accurate idea of how fast another car is going, look at them for a few seconds, to see how far they travel. If you only have a quick glance it is more difficult. We like to keep our heel on the floor if possible, but drivers with smaller feet just can’t do this so have to work out their own way of using the pedals.

Yes, we can adjust the clutches biting point to vary the amount of 'drive' to the car's wheels - very useful when manoeuvring.

That depends on when that car model was originally made, but anything that's at least 10 years old would feel quite different to drive when compared to the latest models.

Seems like on-screen RPM is lagging behind sound as engine is accelerating for example 3:43 - 3:51, not that big of a case, just noticed.

There isn't an on-screen RPM meter. The blue line is just an analogue speed display taken from the GPS data from the camera. Sometimes it does tend to lag a little behind the actual speed as the car's roof block the GPS signals a little, but overall we like the display so use it whenever possible.

That’s because that car would have a much larger engine than a normal car! Everything is easier with a big engine (except fuel economy of course!). Almost every AMG I have seen has an auto gearbox though - which model did you drive?

Our view is that it doesn’t matter what steering technique you use - as long as the car is in full control. Just do whatever works for you 👍🏼

That doesn't honestly make much difference - especially if it is a larger capacity engine. The blue Ford Fiesta ST in our newer videos is only a 1.5 petrol turbo, but it can easily manoeuvre without pressing the gas pedal. The important thing to remember is that the engine will never stall if the clutch is held at the biting point - only when it is fully engaged too early. 👍🏼

That depends on the size and type of petrol engine. The car that followed this diesel car was a petrol Ford Fiesta ST - if anything it was even harder to stall! In our experience, less powerful engines are easier to stall than more powerful engines - the type of fuel doesn’t matter much.
