It works without the accelerator as well, if you're loading and weight shifting for a drift, but there's just a little too much traction, you can give a quick kick to the clutch, and that can initiate the slide, then accelerate to control the oversteer. In that case you're using the engine braking for the same "shock" effect. Abrupt changes of power applied to the wheels are what make you lose traction, once you're at the limit of your grip.
@SuperSreggin5 жыл бұрын

Clutch kicking does a couple of things - it lets the engine put energy into the flywheel, which when you dump the clutch puts that energy down to the tires. It also shock-loads the tires to help break them loose. And yeah, it's hard on parts. Throw-out bearing not so much - that's "upstream" of the clutch, so it won't really take any abuse. Everything else it's pretty rough on.

@TylerFritsch905 жыл бұрын
He explains it a little in the handbrake turn video. He says it's fine on a 4wd vehicle (subaru), but to make sure you also put the clutch in. For me that makes it kind of a gray area. If you put the clutch in, at least your center diff will only be fighting front and back wheels, instead of front wheels combined with engine inertia vs back wheels. It still seems like it would be hard on the center diff though. Idk, better to initiate drifts with clutch kick (and wear out your clutch) or handbrake turn (and ruin your center diff)???
@loopduplicate5 жыл бұрын
AWD race rally cars are set up so that when you pull the hand brake, the center differential unlocks. That is also explained in their hand brake video. It kinda sounds like you just need to watch more Team O'Neil!!!

I'd be a bit more interested in good video lesson/example of clutch-work for opposite, to restore grip and increase traction when in mid drift or when accelerating with already spinning tires instead of pictured in this video clutch-kick transmission jolt to initiate loss of grip. For example clutch "massaging"/manual pulsating, supposedly used to both quicken acceleration on cars with no TC and to slow car rotation to save from complete spin-out when drifting, especially in stock-ish cars with limited max steering angle, as releasing accel pedal engine rpm drop-off inertia lag and engine braking can still rob grip compared to instant freeing of driven wheels with clutch to start restoring grip/reducing rotation.

In traffic, I usually have to double or triple kick the clutch in my outback with full throttle whenever I start off from a slightly uphill stop with the AC on. Otherwise the car bogs down & takes at least 6 seconds to get from 0 to 15 mph. If I kick it twice at full throttle it can accelerate like a normal car. On level ground I usually don't have to kick it but I do have to use full throttle in 1st through 3rd shifting at 6k just to keep up with the flow of grandma's in SUV's.
