Thanks. I needed this over the weekend! I was in Denver, CO, and the altitude just killed the low RPM torque on my car. I guess it was the turbo having a harder time/ taking longer to build boost. Once I got the RPMs up, it was fine. This would have helped.

It works without the accelerator as well, if you're loading and weight shifting for a drift, but there's just a little too much traction, you can give a quick kick to the clutch, and that can initiate the slide, then accelerate to control the oversteer. In that case you're using the engine braking for the same "shock" effect. Abrupt changes of power applied to the wheels are what make you lose traction, once you're at the limit of your grip.

I even love the sound at the end of the videos with the car hitting the rev limiter (just re-listened and the car takes off in dirt and the microphone gets blasted... the deep sound of that flowy exhaust... drool.) Always stoked to see another Team O'Neil Rally School vid in my new subscription vids :)

Clutch kicking does a couple of things - it lets the engine put energy into the flywheel, which when you dump the clutch puts that energy down to the tires. It also shock-loads the tires to help break them loose. And yeah, it's hard on parts. Throw-out bearing not so much - that's "upstream" of the clutch, so it won't really take any abuse. Everything else it's pretty rough on.

can you make a video explaining how/if/.. hand braking , heal toe , initiations , work in awd and 4x4 .. basically does it work compared to fwd and rwd , i never driven a awd and curious if i could pull the handbrake while i apply throttle like in a fwd or will it fight the differential too much
@TylerFritsch90
@TylerFritsch90 5 жыл бұрын
He explains it a little in the handbrake turn video. He says it's fine on a 4wd vehicle (subaru), but to make sure you also put the clutch in. For me that makes it kind of a gray area. If you put the clutch in, at least your center diff will only be fighting front and back wheels, instead of front wheels combined with engine inertia vs back wheels. It still seems like it would be hard on the center diff though. Idk, better to initiate drifts with clutch kick (and wear out your clutch) or handbrake turn (and ruin your center diff)???
@loopduplicate
@loopduplicate 5 жыл бұрын
AWD race rally cars are set up so that when you pull the hand brake, the center differential unlocks. That is also explained in their hand brake video. It kinda sounds like you just need to watch more Team O'Neil!!!

Edit: I learned this myself, without never knowing the name for it, because I played with my car since the day I started driving. Why don't more people get into trouble, get into small wrecks, push their cars to the limit when they are still learning. So many people on the road today only know how to steer, not drive.

I'd be a bit more interested in good video lesson/example of clutch-work for opposite, to restore grip and increase traction when in mid drift or when accelerating with already spinning tires instead of pictured in this video clutch-kick transmission jolt to initiate loss of grip. For example clutch "massaging"/manual pulsating, supposedly used to both quicken acceleration on cars with no TC and to slow car rotation to save from complete spin-out when drifting, especially in stock-ish cars with limited max steering angle, as releasing accel pedal engine rpm drop-off inertia lag and engine braking can still rob grip compared to instant freeing of driven wheels with clutch to start restoring grip/reducing rotation.

In traffic, I usually have to double or triple kick the clutch in my outback with full throttle whenever I start off from a slightly uphill stop with the AC on. Otherwise the car bogs down & takes at least 6 seconds to get from 0 to 15 mph. If I kick it twice at full throttle it can accelerate like a normal car. On level ground I usually don't have to kick it but I do have to use full throttle in 1st through 3rd shifting at 6k just to keep up with the flow of grandma's in SUV's.

@@pengdu7751 I guess it depends, if I knew a little bit more I'd be like "oh, it is because your car has this", but that is a lame excuse. But in my experience, steering with the throttle is the most effecient, but maybe there is something more at play.

@@flecktards3126 steering with throttle definitely is the way to go. just wondering how AWD car would react to clutch kicking

I was curious about this as well. Although my WRX gets sideways in the snow fairly easy with just a bit of gas no clutch kick needed.

Won't you have that vibration if you leave it so quickly? Or you can use it only 3rd gear +? Isn't it bad for transmission?

Clutch kicking is also pretty common among lazy motorcycles because of the ease of popping wheelie with clutch

Clutch kick can be a good method on rally cross or auto cross in a lower power AWD car in tight corners. Can help get into boost faster and give you a bit of a bump out of the corner. Check out the Rally Cross Subaru Wagon video by Robert Jefferson on here if you want examples.

Should you buy a "racing clutch" if you have a rally/drift car because i imagine for a regular let say e36 it will destroy it pretty quick

All good, but just dont forget that this is a clutch killer if you keep doing it in the long term. Avoid overdoing it. Also, you dont need to kick as hard as in the vid. It is perfectly fine to let the clutch a little slower, will help improve the clutch lifespan.

Aside from potential clutch wear is this any harder on the drivetrain than dumping the clutch after a downshift?
@Teamoneilrally
@Teamoneilrally 5 жыл бұрын
Not really... Especially if you're already cornering somewhat hard, the tires are close to their limits of adhesion anyway, it doesn't take much of a clutch kick to break the rear tires free.
