I started this week with a pile of dishes, a pile of laundry, and an office covered in clutter. Then, I put on one of your videos, and in that 30 or 40 minutes, the clean dishes were put away, and the dirty ones were clean and air drying. Meanwhile, I folded, hung up, and put away the clean clothes and tossed the dirty stuff in the corner until I had an empty basket. Once the load was in the washer, I grabbed my trash can from the bathroom and finished sorting stuff from a dresser drawer. Now, the keep pile is back in the drawer, the trash is in the can, and a few items are in a donation box. I pulled out a few clothes to be donated because I have new clothes coming next week. Finally, this morning, I grabbed the mess in the office, put it in one pile, found one of your videos, and started sorting the pile. Then, the recycle pile went in the kitchen can, the shredables got shredded, and the to-do pile was ready to go. The file pile needs to be sorted more in a few minutes and filed. All of this started on Monday with one of your videos.

Cas, Thank you. Recently, my Hubby had open heart surgery & we got the house clean beforehand knowing people would come by to visit afterward & I wouldn't be cleaning all by myself. Now, each night before sitting down, I make a sweep through the house & reset for the next day. It has freed up my mind, spirit & time to do things that I want to do when my Hubby is napping & I'm not feeling guilty about the house being a mess. It's been awesome & I'm trying really hard to keep it this way. All your encouragement is paying off. 😊

Cas, Thank you so much for this! As a 71 Y/o cancer patient, major surgery followed by massive acts of chemo, I decided to retire and start quilting. My dining room has suffered collections of fabrics, etc. When starting this video, I got off my duff and started organizing the stuff and pulling out the stuff that needs to go! I'm also a grad of your expert class. You are so inspiring! PS I rang the bell at cancer center on 7/18! Go me!

About never leaving a room empty-handed… I use the same strategy, and have used it for years! In the transportation industry, think large, semi trucks, the most wasteful thing for a truck is to return with an empty load. So it’s called back hauling. And the objective is to have no empty back hauling. So I actually use those same words around my house. If I need to get something in the garage, I just say no empty back hauling and I make sure to take something with me that belongs in the garage. No empty back hauling!

I have a silly little thing I do to help me declutter....fill a box with item's you are not using. Write the date on the box and a projected date one or two years in the future. Mark your calendar and when the projected date arrives you can do one of two things. If you can say 'I don't remember what I put in this box' then just take the box and donate it. If you do remember, open the box and evaluate whether or not you can get rid of it. I have never been able to remember what's in the box.

I hear people say they’ve had enough of mess and clutter, but don’t actually do anything. That 100% tells me, they really haven’t had enough of the mess or clutter. When I say I had had enough of our cluttered home, I was ready to make a bonfire with the clutter and our home finally changed. It took months of changing habits and setting new routines but we did it….and that was in 2020. Our home is our restful oasis now❤️❤️❤️

One habit I gained that helps with my bedroom is to fold the bed clothes halfway when I wake up. I don't make the bed. I just fold the clothes over about knee down to make sure that the bedsheets are getting some air and leave. Latter I return, plump the pillows, make the bed, dust a little and vacuum. But if I don't make the bed, it's ok because I left it neat, so I can just get in and pull the covers.
@bitrudder3792

I like to do that, too - and I want to go euro style someday, too. Just a pillow+case, fitted top sheet and a duvet+cover for each of us. Letting beds air out is healthy!

Nothing says I am so greatful to have decluttered kitchen and organized drawers as finding mouse poop in a drawer. Yep took care of business right away not a big project since I have had my space organized and decluttered for some time. Mice do not just seek messy spaces but having a decluttered space made it so much easier to see this right away.

When I knew I was going to leave my ex, my life was spinning out of control even more. I felt like the only thing I could do for some control in my life is buying a nice soap for the shower. I’m trying to apply that something I can control to decluttering and cleaning. I want to get back to being the tidiest teenager I was back in the day before living with a narcissistic hoarder. Right now I have depression and chronic physical pain so I do what I can when I can and be kind to myself. ❤

It is amazing how much can be done in a very small amount of time. For example - while in the bathroom after brushing my teeth, I wipe the sink, and pick up. While reheating my coffee, I wipe the kitchen counter and clean the sink. Just doing something while I am there is productive and takes no extra time. Love your videos, Cass!

Cass, Thank you for getting me out of this organizing rut. I used your 30 day declutter challenge and that was just the kick in the pants I needed to do the rest of my home. This month I am doing my own 30 day declutter paper challenge. Paper has always been my issue. But 2 weeks in and I made a major difference. In addition, I have been deep cleaning areas I dislike doing, like outside my windows. Doing it at my own pace and not beating myself about it has been a game changer. So again, thank you for all that you do.

I'm still trying to give myself a consistent bag/box location for the clothes I'm no longer using. 😅 Having grown up with Scarcity Mindset makes it tough to let go of Useful Things, especially if they're not broken beyond my repair skill level. However, I see that I must give myself permission to evict some squatters that are just taking up space without serving their purpose. So, "clothes" seems to be a good place to start. ❤️‍🩹
@bitrudder3792
@bitrudder3792 16 күн бұрын
@ - I focused on clothes yesterday, too! A headcold/fever with a lot of fatigue and some brain fog kept me from any sustained effort, but I am amazed at what I got done (it was strategic - resting then moving at intervals, drinking water, to keep the thing from settling into my lungs.) I have the scarcity mindset as well, but I was able to dedicate an entire desk to having my sewing machine set up, and have been tackling little bitty mending and alteration tasks. I'm having trouble letting go of things that charities are sure to trash. I did a slap-dash remodel of an old T-shirt, and I imagine myself reviving and improving the sewing skills of my youth, practicing on these weird, wiggly fabrics of today (though I don't really want to wear cheap synthetics!) 🤣🤣🤣 Hopefully I will come to my senses soon, and feel competent enough after a little practice to let it go. Yesterday I employed two mindset strategies: - I'm making stronger moves to remove things that are not really good colors, don't look or fit as I like, and put in the time-will-tell area - I want more negative space, for my closet to feel more like a boutique, baby steps 1,2,3 That helped me mitigate some of that Scarcity mindset, along with thinking about items as I put them into "Time will tell." Some will probably fit me again, some in great colors for me, some pending needing them for a work/volunteer setting. Some will pass through the scrutiny of a friend connected to a charity. Some may be destined for restyling. Etc. I feel much more detached from these than I did before. I have found that it is easier to do this purging in stages. The obviously worst choices are easiest to get rid of. So if I keep getting rid of the worst, then the semi-OK is going to be easier to get rid of later.

Getting back to an organised home can need a massive mind shift. I’ve had a lot of therapy on living with a narcissistic hoarder. I had 2 problems: 1. He’d put me down all the time for a messy house, tell me that I’m a useless cleaner, etc. and 2. I couldn’t say anything about his hoarding even though it was dangerous to walk across many rooms that mainly he inhabited. He didn’t want me to decorate because they would be dust collectors and if I did put something out, I’d be ridiculed or get the silent treatment so I didn’t. Any empty space was taken over by his stuff including trophies. I was the tidiest teen and loved having a clean and decorated room. That was destroyed with his attitude and if I did 9 jobs on my list, he’d comment on not doing the 10th and the others weren’t done properly. I also had to try to get the kids to clean up after themselves so he didn’t do the same to them, he didn’t because I was his target and it was a great way to turn them against me. If they got upset by having to clean up, I got blamed that I wasn’t a good parent and it was my fault. If you have these issues, seek help and learn about narcs and how to heal. ❤

Cass, Let me preface this comment by saying that before I watched this video, I just took care of my dishes and did a quick vac. Listening to this podcast is my reward and my chance to rest. I have followed you for years and you have changed my life and helped me in so many ways. But when I listen to you say that chronic pain is just an excuse not to get started, I am offended and hurt. You do not know what it is like to live in pain and not be able to work for a😊 longer period or sometimes at all. That is not an excuse, it is a fact. Today, I am feeling a title better so now that I’ve watched 3/4 of your video and am going to stand up and wipe down the counters. That may be all I can do. If it is then that is ok. It is important not to push too hard because then I won’t be able to do anything tomorrow . This is my life, not an excuse. I hope, in the future, you might be a little more considerate of those of us who live in pain.

You said it beautifully. I also have a number of chronic pain issues and have been home bound for a few years because of my back. It's definitely not an excuse. I love the idea of the “squatter”! It evoked a visceral reaction in me that I absolutely wasn’t expecting. Thank you! I know that idea will make it even easier to keep getting rid of the clutter. 😊

So glad when you pop up because I am conditioned to do work when you speak to me. Right now, the never leave a room emptyhanded is my family focus, namely my husband as he seems to really struggle with this. I am going to add the sticky notes and hope this helps him ❤

Had to giggle... When you said "POP" it brought back good memories living in Oregon before moving to the East Coast. The good old days when you could buy a pop and they didn't laugh at you or stare at you with a blank look. Thank You!!

I truly think you are the best help for "cluttery" people, like me. I struggle living in clutter, but I am myself, and my whole family are so prone to clutter 😢😢😢 But listening to you, going through the 30 days thing helped sooo much! Not finished, but it is so much better now. Thank you! Hugs!

I feel like hacks are actually accommodations or systems and can all be helpful. I balk at the idea of “rules” so labeling something positive like you did, ie the mantra (not rule) “never leave a room empty handed” is magic for me! Thank you ❤

OMG girl - you describe me to a tee..always finding an excuse or looking for inspiration from someone ele because I have no idea where to start!! How do I stop making the excuses...because I hate looking at all the clutter and it is making me feel crazy and I feel like you are speaking directly to me. I don't want anyone to come to my house because I am embarresed and I am lonely because of that...I need to get moving...

Bought a beautiful wooden drawer box for my color pencils- pens etc - I allowed myself to keep only what fits- easy breezy- beautiful…😉anyway- this put a movement in motion - out with the 3 drawer plastic rolling unit ( I know Cas can’t stand those lol) and moving my “stationary “ contents to a smaller unit - all this while watching and listening- suddenly it became obvious- I have no longer need / use for the extra ruler - triangle - a box of paper clips - photo corners - sheet of black labels - box of staples- index tabs for small ring binder … and on and on - in the past 30 years I just moved them along - because it was my stationary 🤷‍♀️ with every time I listen to my ‘declutter trio’ it becomes easier- last year I didn’t let go - - don’t give up or say it’s hopeless- it really peels like an onion layer by layer- I dropped off 3 boxes at goodwill this morning- 4 more to go yey🎉🎉🎉- thanks Cas❤

I have spent a few hours shredding and sorting papers while I "watched" the University of Tennessee football game. I brought a box of papers into my living room along with my shredder. Anything that needed shredded it went immediately into the shredder. I also brought the kitchen garbage can into the living room (after I emptied it of the kitchen garbage). I started by having piles: keep, throw away, and shred. I am about to go through the pile of things to keep so I can pare it down even further. I allotted my day to do this. I really liked the 5-minute declutter we did a few months ago. With this, I knew that I couldn't just do it 5 minutes at a time. I had company for Thanksgiving. I washed my dishes while I cooked. I cleaned my kitchen before I went to bed on Thanksgiving evening and found that waking up Friday morning to clean kitchen was so nice. Walking into my bathroom and seeing that my toilet is clean even around the base, is empowering! I am a former clean freak. I used to have an absolutely spotless house. During my marriage there was a lot of emotional and psychological abuse. This is part of my recovery. I would like to say I'm newly divorced but it's been nearly 16 years since we broke up. I'm tired of living like this. I hate running around the house cleaning for 15 minutes before guests arrive or apologizing to those who are coming to work on things in my house. So, slowly but surely I am getting my house back to being one where guests can arrive at almost any time without me panicking.

The favourite mantra you taught me was GETMO! That has changed my life! I would put things off because I couldn’t do it to perfection so now I just say GETMO and I start and it’s fine… and I feel great! I’ve taught my three sons 12-7 years this and they do it for anything they put off because it’s too big … e.g. write a speech … good enough to move onto the fun stuff like video games! It’s not perfect but it’s done!

Not sure if it's a mantra, but one thing I say to myself that I got from Cas is "do it for your tomorrow self"....gamechanger in getting me to do things at night when I am so exhausted and think I can't do anything else.

Thank you Cass! Love the squatter analogy and hot lava trick! I’ve gone through my house and have a donation pile to take out. It’s leaving my house today! 😊 something funny I threw out is empty face cream jars/containers. I had about 10 of them. Why was I keeping them? “Incase I want to make my own DIY face cream from shea butter and whatever else” which I have never done. I know I won’t do it either, so they are gone today! 😊thank you for your inspiration and motivation!

Cas, thank you. Many years ago if we didn't know what to do with something we put in a tote and shoved it in the shed. A while ago I gave a lot away, but since then we have inherited stuff from multiple families. I am more motivated to start giving away the items we don't use.

As a self diagnosed adhd adult after reading up for my kiddo I recently learned this “don’t put it down, put it away” mantra which has helped with preventing most clutter. My next item to tackle it paper, from manuals, instructions, financial papers, kids artwork, and so on. Hoping to make much digital for the important stuff and shred or toss the stuff that doesn’t need to be physical versions. Very hard because I once took pics of my own artwork and tossed the physical and the pics didn’t turn well and I was so upset when I no longer had the art that I won awards for.

I’m sorry to hear that but glad to know you’re working through the trauma. Be proud of yourself and take care of your heart. ❤ It’s hell to find out just how much others don’t appreciate you. Are you able to make up a sentimental box or make up scrapbooks for the memories? Can you scan any documents for later instead of keeping the physical copies? I know from my Mum that there’s a lot of shredding to do with uni records as she was a lecturer. Be cautious of mice getting into stuff in the garage. My Mum put all her Mum’s poems in a box in her garage and the originals were ruined by mice. I’m finding with my divorce paperwork that I have laid down some ground rules for myself. I can only go through it until my stress levels rise even if it’s only a few bits of paper. I also do it as a random job and don’t plan a session so I don’t get myself worked up and remember to be kind to myself.
