It's still weird to me to see Nikki Cross in this given how she's the very reason why Alexa Bliss ended up with Bray Wyatt, and Nikki tried to get Alexa back and fight her afterwards.

I think Bray always wanted to revisit the story of the Alexa Bliss betrayal at Wrestlemania 37. My theory is that Nikki is going to be the way the Wyatts gain "revenge" on Alexa in a way where you have an actual match, because obviously you need a female opponent for her.

I had sort of figured that the idea was that Howdy was drawing forth the darkness in Alexa, and that would lead to some sort of grudge match with somebody, with her (hopefully) joining the Wyatts after that. Because I think the intention was that The Fiend would've wanted revenge on Dark Alexa, not just any version of Alexa Bliss.
