The thing about their rivalry that I always liked was that Punk stated outright that he didn’t hate Cena. A lot of feuds are “I HATE YOU!” but with them, there was always a lot of respect. Tension, yes, but they always respected each other. The best rivals to me are the ones who could be pretty good friends if not for the title hunt.

Wrestling is a form of art where everyone (even the referee) has to each give 100%. Its clear a lot of wrestlers were too afraid go call the shots when they're in the ring with Cena because he was extremely protected. Then you have the money makers. The absolute legendary matches John Cena had in the later half of his career. Punk, Owens, Styles, Rusev, Bray Wyatt. All of them were able to bring out the best of themselves working with Cena.

Punk had legit anger toward Vince because Vince is a control freak and loves to fire people. It's why he never reconciled with Vince even after Vince publicly said he'd be open to working with Punk. It's also why Punk signed with AEW instead of WWE
@MikeCobweb
@MikeCobweb 2 жыл бұрын
@@Texan45 Well, seeing how WWE is hard pushing Roman even tho leukemia was the main reason people sympathized with him, I’d bet Punk would have been used for that. It took them so long to get it right with a guy as great as Bobbly Lashley.
@ChuckGibbs39
@ChuckGibbs39 2 жыл бұрын
@@Texan45 nah that’s not correct. Firstly there was a lot more to it than just Vince releasing wrestlers. Secondly, it’s been publicly stated that WWE (Triple H more specifically) did not want to sign Punk so he didn’t choose anyone over the other, just that AEW was the biggest company available and offering the most money.
@conversationtosaurusrex
@conversationtosaurusrex 2 жыл бұрын
@@Texan45 Thats the thing with Vince McMahon; its less to do with "Vince McMahon control freak who loves to fire people" and more to do with the circumstances of what is WWE now. For example back then during the 1990s, it was just Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson as the scriptwriters, the company gave more flexibility to WWE Wrestlers having creative freedom. As the company developed and went global, it wasn't just Vince running the executive end of the company; you had also guys like john laurinaitis or other executives taking part in the creative development of the company. Vince and the McMahon's weren't the only ones suddenly making decisions; as Vince also had to answer to a bunch of shareholders on the border of directors as a result of WWE going public. And WWE had to evolve and change overtime; WWE specifically went PG as a result of Chris Benoit's murder suicide and the backlash that came as a result to WWE, and as well; to help establish some credibility to WWE as Linda McMahon wanted to branch out and be involved in Politics; so the obvious associations of sex and violence had to be fazed out in WWE. WWE also wanted to be involved in brand deals with Hazbro and various other companies; of which wouldn't do business with a WWE until they rebranded their image.
@DuckFanDane
@DuckFanDane Жыл бұрын
Well, it was the ultimate moment because it was the ultimate blurred lines between what was real and what was fake because most of it was real, especially on CM punks side and Vince McMahon’s side and basically no one knew the outcome of the match except for a select few people. There will never be a storyline like that again they captivate the audience like it did. Also having John Cena the guy that kids want to grow up to be in CM punk the guy that teenagers want to grow up to be against each other where there was no true face or heel was what made the rivalry so great. The fact that he left through the crowd with the iconic moment with the title will forever cement in history.

I have to say, his rivalry with John Cena was well-documented. I've seen people say they've never had a bad match, and I tend to agree with them. They both had great matches together, my favorite of which was the WrestleMania qualifier on February 25th in 2013, that match took their statuses to new heights albeit it was on Raw. Punk pulled a piledriver on Cena, and Cena pulled a hurricanrana on Punk. Although Cena got the upper hand, they both were tremendous in that match, I had to tip my hat to both CM Punk and John Cena, it was that good a match and you rarely ever see that these days. And for them to work with one another, respect each other and boost their careers into the stratosphere, I have nothing but huge kudos for that

CM Punk and John Cena iconic rivals, their rivalry was so memorable, I will never forget the summer of 2011, the epic WWE championship match at Money in the Bank in Chicago is my all time favorite wrestling match, whenever they wrestled they had good matches, brought the best out of each other, they were polar opposites, one was the face of the company, the other was a outspoken rebel. At the start of 2023 I played the WWE2K15 showcase mode highlighting their rivalry and it felt like a trip down memory lane ❤

First to comment, John Cena vs CM Punk was a classic matchup cos they both knew each other so well inside and out, both on-screen and offscreen, they worked very well and their matches and promos were always sweet. For those that want to bury Cena first get ur facts straight, remember because of John Cena, CM Punk was blessed and fortunate to not only face John Cena at the main event of money in the bank, but beat him and hold that WWE championship for 434 data nonstop, just like Lesnar, which is pretty impressive for someone like Punk If CM Punk, was never John Cena genuine friend he would never be in the position he is today. Like it or hate it, pure facts.

It becomes not a fact when you say it’s because they were genuine friends. Because that isn’t how it works. He is so true to himself and that shows in his work. Punk has always been a stand out wrestler in my childhood and exploring more on him, he shows complete humility and graciousness. This man is the heartbeat of professional wrestling, from 2002 to 2012, to even 2022. He is so true to himself on a personal standpoint that his character as a wrestler isn’t far from it. Besides his character, his craft in the ring describes the adjective of THE BEAT IN THE WORLD.

The thing about Punk v. Cena that really worked, it was not like Rock and Austin or Hogan and Savage, neither guy wanted to out do, the other, each guy knew their position on the team, and they knew working together would make them both a lot of Cash, Cena's best opponent was Punk. The story also worked because it's the Poster Boy, Bright, Smiling, "Rise Above Hate" everything Vince McMahon looks for in a guy carrying a WWE World Title, against the guy who is his antithesis, the anti hero, who says "I embrace Hate, I love it." I could just tell Punk and Cena are not B.F.F.'s but they have a lot respect for each other.

The problem with John Cena is never been him, but the way WWE shoved him into people's throat, destroying too many careers of talented guys in the process. To the point that when Cena left, they really stopped making stars and every guy on top right now, doesn't really feel like a big deal compared to part-timers and legends from the past, since they don't get overly protected the same way Rock, Austin, HBK, Hogan, Lesnar, Taker, Cena and Orton got on their way to stardom
